So today was a bit of a guilty pleasure. This little gem was not originally on my apps to review; however, yesterday my wife showed me Topple Ball on her Pixi. Once I tried it, I knew what my next review was going to be.
Topple Ball, by Josh Bilderback, is about as simple as it comes. Guide your ball into the hole while avoiding all the obstacles. The free version is a must try, but it will only serve to get you addicted. It comes with only ten levels. The full thing (which costs $1.99 [ed.: Now it's $1.00] on the App Catalog) gives you over 200.
What impressed me the most about the game is simply the control. Before I played this game I have always been disappointed in my Pre’s accelerometer (that is the little thing inside the phone that knows how it is being moved and tilted). When I have used the web browser and gotten it stuck in landscape mode accidentally I have always practically had to shake the thing to get it to switch back. I had always attributed this little problem to the hardware. After playing this game, that is proven to definitely not be the case.
The ball reacts to the slightest little dip or bend. It really is very cool (and makes me wonder what is up with the browser).
The only blemish on this great game is that there are no leaderboards. This is definitely something that could be remedied in a patch or the next version, but I really missed it on this game. The scoring just begs for one because it really tests your skill. The faster your ball gets into the hole, the more points you get. Ideal for a leaderboard…
When it comes to customization, things are limited, but the options you have are nice. You can turn the vibration and sound on or off, change the board’s background, or even calibrate your accelerometer. Simple game, simple options.
Pros
- Really fun
- Really addictive
- Really great
Cons
- No leaderboards…boo
Bottom Line
If you couldn’t tell already, I am a big fan of Topple Ball. It is exactly what a phone game should be: quick, simple, and most importantly fun. Go get this game.

Really enjoy this game a good bit. Got it when it first showed up on the Homebrew list and is my taxi, airport, doctors office waiting room go to game.
This game is crack in a can…pure and simple.

[...] was a fun day on the review front. Why? Because I got to take a look at the new game Paratrooper by 185vfx (aka Rob Bredow). This game follows in the same vein as Topple Ball in that it is an accelerometer [...]
[...] me, this game is begging for a level selection screen (like found in Paratrooper and Topple Ball). If I have beaten a level, then I should be able to start from there next time I want to play. [...]
