Not so fast!! A different take on Palm’s new ad campaign

By: , 3/15/2010 9:19 pm | 19 comments

“Life Moves Fast” is what Palm claims in their new advertisement that hit the internet today.  The ad was well received by many webOS enthusiasts. However,  in the opinion of this humble author, there is something that moves even faster that Palm seems to not have taken into account; the very commercial itself that they’ve created to demonstrate their product.

First, I will state that I disagree with many twitterers and blog commenters out there (including some from this site) saying this is Palm’s best commercial yet and the one we’ve all been waiting for. I will admit that the ad does have a nice feel to it. There’s cool, hip music (even if not something I’d ever personally listen to) and a sassy, confident looking young lady walking down the street who looks like she might be making the most of whatever it is she’s actually using. But therein lies the problem: What the heck is she using?

Not only does the commercial refuse to give a good look at any actual device whatsoever, something that can be argued is a “safe move” for also being able to promote yet to be released devices, but it also shows you the simulated screen images so quickly that you don’t ever really get a good look at those either. These are two rather large problems. The consumer doesn’t know what the phone looks like, nor did they really get a good look at what it could even do. This leaves too much responsibility on the would-be consumer to find more information by themselves. Either they go to Palm’s website, which would be a step in the right direction, but still maybe not enough; or they do nothing at all because they don’t really even know what they were just exposed to.

Big problem.

I happen to believe that those among us who are already Palm enthusiasts consider this commercial the second coming only because it gives that userbase something to look at that they are already familiar with: notifications and multiple apps. People with webOS phones recognize what’s going on in the ad because they already know about it. Show this same ad to someone who doesn’t know anything about webOS and ask them if they have a single clue as to what is going on and I bet they’d have a hard time figuring it out.

iPhone and Droid commercials may lack overall excitement, but what they do have is a very clearly executed way to show you what their product actually looks like, both in terms of hardware and software. While I don’t think Palm needs to play copycat with their commercials, they do need to take a hint from the competition.

The new Palm ad is, in one aspect, fun and new feeling, which is an improvement over previous ads. On the other, more important side of the coin, it still is lacking what was always lacking from webOS advertisements: a straightforward and simple way of showing the average consumer how this platform stacks up against the competition. Show people flipping between apps in a way that makes them understand what’s actually happening on the screen and then you’ll have your first truly successful webOS advertisement. Until then, hey, at least this commercial has a normal looking person in it, right?

flattr this!

They are launching new phone/phones soon. They are demonstrating webos and Palm the brand.

An iPhone is so brain-dead simple my 2 year old can grasp it in 30 seconds. Droid is a little more complex but similar, and widget pages are like little banner ads or desktops that people are familiar with. While awesome and intuitive after getting used to it, webOS has a slight learning curve that makes it difficult to explain in a 30second clip without being tedious and, ironically, losing the fluid feel of webOS. Hence the earlier “zen” and “tranquil” approaches (failures).

I think this one is a great compromise between showing what it does and what it feels like to use. Going “too fast” is good – it shows the power of the OS and increases the repeat value of the commercial (wait, what was that!?). Not tying to a device is crucial – they need to promote the best part of their phones, which is the OS and not hardware or apps. A little intrigue is fine (think apple or droid pre-launch ads) – the devices may not be new to us but they pretty much are to most consumers.

Hopefully this is one of a series that will aleviate some of your concerns and not be only women :P

I TOTALLY AGREE!!!! They need voiceover to explain what is going on. I know what is going on because I own a Pre, but if I were an outsider, I would have no idea what was really going on! They need to EXPLAIN what the woman is doing!

The lack of a device is notable, but I don’t think a problem because of style. An insert shot — a close up of the actress’ hands operating the phone — would destroy the illusion of the screens floating in front of and around her.

I do agree that the unitiated are unlikely to pick up on everything that’s going on. I think this is also true of the print campaign that launched a few weeks ago. webOS has a lot of good things going on and distilling it is a bit of challenge. It’s a shame that it’s taken this long to get on the right track. If future ads follow this same format and are executed at least as successfully then Palm will have found its message.

My question is…why not mimic the cool Apple ads. I love seeing all the cool apps that they show off. webOS has plenty of amazing apps…show them all running at the same time.

    2 birds. 1 stone.

While I like this ad, if there isn’t a follow-up ad or it doesn’t feature 3D games, then this is another missed opportunity.

My take: this was a good start… as the first commenter said, Palm’s product is webOS, NOT the Pre or Pixi. If someone watching the commercial finds the displayed features appealing, they’d go to a store looking for “that Palm phone.” No need to show just one device. (In fact many would argue NOT to display the hardware.)

I don’t think it’s a HERO commercial (ala Apple commercials from the 1980′s), but I think it’s a great start, and happily a good departure from the Borg Queen ads.

Strange spam…guess I need to put in the robot checks…hate that.

    Oh well…

I have to say I disagree with the idea that Palm’s product is webOS and not the Pre and Pixi. That is like saying that Apple’s product isn’t iPods and iPhones. Of course they are.

Palm makes money off of selling phones, not webOS (not yet anyway).

With that said, I think this ad is great for showing off what make their phones different.

    Couldn't … agree … more.

I'm just checking out webOS after getting bored with a 3GS, but I'm a geek, I've read all the palm sites, I know how webOS works and what it looks like.

The advert shows things happening that we (palm followers / palm users) KNOW about, for Joe Blogs on the street this means nothing, thought is needed to figure out exactly WHAT is going on. Advert fail.

Cut the crap, show the device full screen, voice over saying what's happening, simple.
