webOSroundup presents the PalmSpot video contest

By: , 3/17/2010 3:00 pm | 20 comments

Today is a big day for us here at webOSroundup. We have been working towards this for several weeks now and we couldn’t be more excited to announce our latest and greatest contest. We call this contest PalmSpot and with it you get the chance to show the world how amazing webOS truly is in your own video. What is even more exciting is that Palm is helping us out to take this contest to a whole new level. Excited yet? Wait till you see the prizes!

We may have some other prizes here and there for other honorable mention videos as well so stay tuned! Also, we plan on submitting all first place winners and the grand prize winner to Palm for consideration for a future web ad campaign. No promises though…

The purpose of this contest is to create a new and creative video that showcases the strengths of the Palm Pre, Palm Pixi, and webOS.

The rules are simple.

  • Create a video that showcases your Palm device in a creative manner.
  • Videos must be between 30 seconds and two minutes long
  • Videos cannot contain any vulgar language or offensive content.
  • Videos cannot be a complete ripoff of other copyrighted material (it needs to be original folks)
  • Other than that…have fun!

Entries will be accepted until Friday, April 16th. Videos will be categorized and posted on the official webOSroundup YouTube page as they are received, but views will not be counted until Monday, April 19th.

Categories include:

  • Funniest
  • Most Original
  • Best use of webOS

Starting on the 19th, we will start keeping track of the views for two weeks (ending May 7th). The videos in each category with the most views will be selected as the finalists (so make sure you get all your friends and family to watch your video during this time).

Once the finalists are chosen, we will showcase them here on webOSroundup and everyone will be able to vote for their favorites. Finalists will be also be judged by our all-star panel of judges that will be comprised of Boba Fett, Spuds MacKenzie, Duke Nukem, and Clint Eastwood. In the unlikely event that our superstars cannot be reached, then the videos will be judged by the editors of webOSroundup and Palm’s very own Director of Online Communications, Jon Zilber. The final winners will be chosen by weighing the public vote and the judges’ votes (50/50) .

Now of course there has to be a bit of fine print…but we will keep it as simple and to the point as possible.

  • The creator of all submissions will retain control and full ownership of the video and its contents; however, by submitting it to webOSroundup you are granting us a license to use the video anywhere on the site for any reason.
  • webOSroundup retains the right to refuse a submission for any reason. If you are refused, we will send you an email letting you know why.
  • Winners are not guaranteed to be used as a commercial for Palm, only that it will be submitted to them for consideration.
  • This contest is open to anyone in the world, but because of the varying agreements with the carriers, it may be difficult to give a Pre to winners in countries outside the US. With that said, if we cannot procure a Pre for your carrier, then we will find another prize of equivalent value.
  • The obvious…this contest is void where prohibited by law and all winners are responsible for any taxes.
  • UPDATE — We encourage the ambitious out there to submit as many entries as they want, but you can only win once!

flattr this!

No chuck norris? Pffft, I'm out.

He already turned us down…was too busy kicking people in the face.

  • Mott

Is there a limit on how many videos we are allowed to submit?

  • kandekilla

Since I already had storyboards done from already wanting to start something like this, its time to start the first round of shots this week. Now i just have to hope i can get the shots done with out a million notifications going off on my phone and messing them up.

    @Dijitek

cool, only if Ive had an idea.

question: what is palm's role in this? is this truly grassroots?

  • http://www.webosroundup.com/ David

There is no limit on the number of videos a single person can submit, but you can only win one time.

  • http://www.webosroundup.com/ David

Palm is helping us out by providing the phones and touchstones. The Grand Prize is financed by us. They have also been kind enough to provide Jon to help us judge.

So to answer your question, yes it is grassroots.

  • Mott

    Fair enough, thanks!

  • haubey

I have an idea, but I'm not sure how I'm going to actually film it…. definitely going to be an amazing contest. Great idea, guys!

  • Vicki

Filming WITH the Palm Pixi is NOT a requirement, correct?

  • Vicki

Filming WITH the Palm Pixi video feature is NOT a requirement, correct?

  • http://www.webosroundup.com/ David

Nope…you definitely don't have to film using the Pre or Pixi. The goal is to have a great video ABOUT webOS, Pre, and/or Pixi, not which recording device you use.

  • Phoomp

Where is a link to the YouTube page where the videos will be show?

  • Joe

Will video quality / roughness of the 'commercial' be judged? Or will it be content, and not matter if it's a little rough around the edges?

  • http://www.webosroundup.com/ David

They will be shown on our official youtube page: http://www.youtube.com/webosroundup

  • http://www.webosroundup.com/ David

In the end, of course quality is going to matter. This will be judged by the public after all. With that said, we will not prevent videos that are rough around the edges from being submitted. If you have a great idea, then that will shine through some roughness.

As important as marketing is, as Apple always demonstrates with their late to market technologies, this fan driven ad campaign will not rescue palm, the pre, or the webos.

I have posted my solution on many social blog sites, and so you may have seen it already, but the only real way that palm will be able to rise up, and possibly over the iPhone, yes, the iPhone, is to make the Palm Pre Plus available on prepay.

    Example:
I have used postpaid phones for over a decade. I am tired of all the billing disputes, contracts, and bullshit from these carriers.
I was on Virgin Mobile prepay for 3 years, with their $29 phones, and $15/3months plans which resulted in my converting 40+ friends, family, and clients over to prepay.
The past year, I switched to Boost Mobile, because they were offering better than Virgin rates, along with the PTT walkie talkie function of the Nextel iDEN network. IMO, more useful than the web features of the iPhone. After all, for me, voice is the #1 killer app still. AT&T, are you listening?

States and counties all over the US are currently busy trying to woo Google Broadband to provide ultra high speed internet fiber to their community.
I want elegant, affordable mobile phone technology for $99. C'mon Palm. I know you can do it. Don't make me add you to my list of failed engineering excellence list of BeOS, Toshiba HD DVD, DEC Alpha, SGI Irix, Sega Dreamcast, Apple Mac OS 7, and vinyl LPs (my Linn LP12) to my list of technologies ahead of their time…

So the bottom line is, Palm has a lot of phones to unload right now. There are NO smartphones currently available in the prepaid mobile phone market (with the exception of a blackberry curve on boost, which is so screwed up, that they can't even port your current phone number, as required by the FCC, since they are still doing everything thru parent Sprint for their Boost CDMA phones).
So if Palm would provide a smartphone for the magic sub-$100 price, and they would totally decimate the market. Google Android won't know what hit them. Instant market share beyond Windows Mobile rubbish.

Its all up to you Dan Hesse. Dan Schulman. Are you paying attention? Jon Rubinstein are you serious about survival? Making Steve Jobs shit his pants?

I know everyone who reads this won't be able to deny that there would be a mad rush on Pre phones for $99 prepay no contract. I would probably buy one for every person I know…

    Good luck.
