Sprint Pre/Pixi Owners: You feeling burnt?

By: , 4/5/2010 4:08 pm | 12 comments

webOS has grown quite a bit since its launch last summer. The Pre debuted on Sprint to much anticipation and shortly after, the younger brother (sister?), Pixi was born. Then Palm sought out new carriers in Verizon and more recently AT&T with enhanced versions of their existing phones. This is great for Palm overall and great for new potential webOS customers, but when you stop to think about it, the original Sprint Pre and Pixi owners actually might have the short end of the stick here. Read on to hear my thoughts on the subject.

With the recent announcement that Verizon will be offering Mobile Hotspot usage free of charge to their Palm device customers, Pre Plus and Pixi Plus users on Big Red gain a heavy advantage over Sprint Pre users who don’t have access to the tethering app even if they wanted to pay for it (homebrew solutions not considered).

AT&T users who will soon have access to the Pre and Pixi Plus also gain a considerable advantage in the fact that their network has the capability to run voice and data simultaneously. To me, this is a great way to take full advantage of the multitasking power that webOS provides. All those iPhone commercials that brag about being able to be on a call and check movie times, or downloading/playing 3D games while on hold, the Pre Plus will be able to do all of that and multitask on top of it all.

Both Verizon and ATT users not only enjoy added “bonuses” from their networks, but they also have access to the more powerful Pre Plus and the WiFi capable Pixi Plus. As a Sprint Pre user since day one, I am proud of the fact that I was part of the early adoption process and was able to watch and be a part of the growth of the platform. But on the other hand I’m starting to wonder when Palm will give back some love to the customer base that was there when webOS was first born.

webOS is superior to Android for a number of reasons, but with the announcement of the HTC EVO 4G on Sprint some time this summer, the Pre is, in my opinion, no longer the powerhouse flagship phone for Sprint. I feel that Palm needs to really pull out all the stops on their next device and show some love to the Sprint users who were there from the beginning. Give us a nice, big screen with a higher resolution. Give us a higher megapixel camera with auto-focus. Give us a digital compass for augmented reality apps. Give us 4G. Give us a real heavy hitter of a phone and I feel that a lot of people will be quite happy.

flattr this!

If Palm doesn't have a more powerful device with higher resolution announced or out around the time the EVO 4G is released, my primary device will be the EVO 4G.

I am sold on webOS (not even considering going to Android or EVO) and enjoy the pricetag of my Sprint bill… However, Palm better at least announce something before June 6 otherwise they will probably lose a lot of users when the Sprint Premier 1-year upgrades are available! I would even be OK about bringing the Pre Plus / Pixi Plus to Sprint in June and then announce their 2.0 hardware for the holidays… but they better do SOMETHING!

As a Palm Pre owner since day one and one who paid retail for it! I feel like I have not recieved my moneys worth of features for the price I paid. Come June or July when the Evo comes out if Palm hasn't at least announced a new power hittn' device I'm switching. I love Palm and WebOS but when it boils down to dollar for dollar and bang for your buck Android is starting to look better. Boy I hate to say that but its the truth!

While a Pre Plus would be nice I'm pretty happy with my Sprint Pre. All I really want is free official tethering on Sprint. I'm hoping for a new Palm device this summer on all the networks. Hopefully we'll see a 4G Palm device on sprint this year, but it better not be exclusive to Sprint. If Sprint doesn't give me free tethering by September when I'm eligible for early upgrade I'm leaving them for Verizon if Verizon has the new Palm device and Free Mobile Hotspot.

There is absolutely no reason why tethering should not be available and free.

I am hearing the words “better get a new phone or I am going to the EVO” quite a bit these days. Palm can't discount the sentiment…the EVO is basically and HD2 with 4G. From a pure hardware perspective, it is hard to beat.

With that said…I still prefer webOS. Don't get me wrong…I would LOVE a 4G Palm super phone, but I can't see me switching. Course…you would expect me to say that right?

yea, we might have gotten burned on the Sprint network but we still love our webOS phones no matter what, ill be happy with an upgraded upgraded pre, maybe 32 gig model!

I don't see how we got burnt with our much lower data plan price.

And no one is gonna keep up with HTC when it comes to hardware specs. Only they beat themselves. N1, HD2 -> Evo. But we still have the best OS.

I have been a true Palm devotee for many years, and was there on day one to get the new Pre from Sprint. Although I do LOVE webOS, and feel that it is certainly the best platform available on cell phones with the best UI out there, I do feel slighted by the fact that the most loyal of Palm users were given the short end of the stick. We should not have been made to feel that we were using an inferior device so soon after getting it.

I will always support webOS, but the Palm Pre is not the device for the masses. My case in point: my husband and son, who are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Evo, regardless of how I point out the superiority of the webOs platform. I almost feel like Palm should not have rushed to get out a device that was almost obsolete at arrival. They should have waited a little longer, and brought out a fully loaded device, instead of making us continually wait for updates.

So, in response to your article, I anxiously await the arrival of a new device with all of the improvements that you noted, and even more (how about a few of the features that made the Treo a great phone, that were not incorporated into the Pre.) And yes, Sprint, you need to offer the free mobile hotspot. When that comes out, I will once again, be the first in line at Sprint to buy and support the newest Palm phone.

“…the EVO is basically and HD2 with 4G….”
…and a slightly more modern operating system, too.

What Palm could do is announce the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus for Sprint and AT THE SAME TIME reveal their new super, killer, ultra, mega phone, what ever it is, with a holiday release.

I think Palm's next device should be a slab, but I don't want that, no matter what the specs. The Pre is the perfect form factor for me. Even if Sprint just gets the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus as they currently are, I'd re-up with Sprint for just twice the RAM and storage. Of course, I'm really hoping for the Pre Plus SD.

This is exactly how I have been feeling of late. As much as I love palm and know that webOS is the best mobile OS on the market it's hard for the gadget nerd in me to see the EVO and not want it immediately.

Just curious, how's the evo working out for you? Have you thought about coming back to the pre?
