HTC EVO compared side-by-side with Palm Pre on Android Central

Ever wonder what the small Palm Pre would look like right next to the HTC EVO?  Well, Phil Nickinson of Android Central did just that in this great little article.  He even posted a great YouTube video of the two phones, side-by-side.  Check out the video after the break, complete with our obviously webOS-biased commentary:

  • Phil admits right from the start that webOS has a special place in his heart. Well thanks Phil! We agree.
  • The EVO looks like a MONSTER next to the Pre. I mean a big screen is great and all, but overall the device seems really, really huge. This could be a great thing and a not-so-great thing.  You decide.
  • Phil talks about notifications next, and admits what we all know: webOS does it better.
  • Phil goes on to multitasking and again states the obvious: webOS does it better.  In his words, multitasking on the Pre is “so simple, it’s a little ridiculous.”
  • Memory management comes next. The Sprint Pre is dinged for running out of memory. This is sadly true… but Palm fixed this issue by doubling the RAM on the Pre Plus.
  • Keyboard comparison… This part cracks me up. Testers (like iPhone-worshipping jon4lakers on YouTube) always claim “this virtual keyboard is great” and then mis-type “test” to read “teat.”  Well, Phil assures us that the EVO’s huge keyboard levels the playing field quite a bit.  Was he right? … No.
    • The Palm Pre correctly displays “Testing the keyboard.”
    • The EVO writes: “Teating the EVO keyboard.” … Heh heh. C’mon we’re biased, Phil. You knew we’d have fun with that one.  You virtual keyboard fans really like your teats! :)

So, while the EVO certainly has tons of merits for Android fans, overall the Palm Pre didn’t cower in its monster shadow…  of course it decided at the end of the video to go haywire at the last second (bug is more prone to happen on Sprint Pre… we hate it!!!), but he chalked it up to his inexperience with webOS.  Shh! We won’t tell him if you don’t! ;)

flattr this!

Mmm that screen is pretty. Too bad it has Android on it :)

I strongly hope that size is not going to become the sweetspot standard for smartphones from now on.

One thing I like about the ipad is that it shows people that if they ask for a bigger iphone (that is already big enough for me), incrementing its size is gonna hurt it a lot; so better make a completly different form factor where even apps can take advance of having far more real state; but not a bigger phone that you must carry with you 24/7 in your pocket…if it fits.

I know I'm done with my Pre. Now, do I go to EVO or wait and see what the new iPhone has to offer.

  • iroc371

Hmm I've never had problems swiping cards away like that

  • http://www.webosroundup.com/ DanR

Yep. It happens either due to memory leaks or the virtual keyboard being installed. It's incredibly annoying, but thankfully infrequent.

Ok how are his cards loading that fast. I have the Palm Pre Plus and they don't load that fast. I was thinking maybe it has to do with some patches I have installed but it still didn't load that fast before patches.

hey I have a Pre and am upgrading to the EVO I have questions RE battery life, memory and user experience interface because I loved the WebOS and will probably get a tablet Web Os went HP brings one out on a capable hardware platform. Will the EVO have a bigger battery option and when will android 2.2 be available. I hear that it will make a big difference in operating speed.

Hey there. As impressive as the EVO is, I'm not switching. Here's why:

To answer your questions, based on my reading the battery is indeed larger (1500mAh) but does not last very long, especially when 4G is used regularly. This comes as no surprise as even 3G broadband radios suck up a lot of juice… not to mention the EVO's huge screen does that too.

EVO does indeed launch with Froyo (2.2) installed. My only (biased and very loaded) question is, how long will you have to wait before getting another update once a newer Android device launches in a few months?

Yes, that screen is awesome – but seriously – where the heck would you keep that thing? ITS HUGE! Maybe it sprouts wheels and a handle so you can roll it around.

That is the million dollar question, so many phones and they are all on different versions. At least I know when coding for WebOS, there is a safe bet that it will run on every device.

  • Terry

    LOL!
