TOP PICK: Notes

I will start this out by saying that productivity apps are not at the top of my “things to download” list. I am just not “that guy.” You know who I’m talking about. I’m referring to the suit and tie wearing, Starbucks drinking, briefcase carrying, BMW driving business man. Plain and simple I’m not that guy. I work on the railroad as a mechanic. My “business attire” consists of work pants, work boots, welding helmet, various gauges, etc.  Therefore, I really don’t use my phone to organize my day. My Palm Pre is just another one of my various man toys. I use my phone mainly as a source of entertainment.

Outside of what came with my phone I only have one productivity app and I’m more than happy to say that it is Notes from Inglorious Apps. Ever since I moved from palmOS to webOS I have missed my old Tasks app. Plain and simple it did what little organization I needed. I do use the Memos app that comes with webOS to jot down various things but it is not what you would call robust in the features department. From what my wife wants from Chipotle to what the torque spec is for an air valve on an Amtrak Superliner all gets written down in Memos. However, what if you could combine the old Tasks app with our current Memo app? That is what Notes does and it even adds a little media flare into the mix.

The user interface is very simple. When you open an app you will be looking at an overview of all your notes in chronological order. You can sort them by whatever category you like by pressing the categories button in the upper right part of the screen. If you would like to compose a new note just press the little + icon at the bottom right of the screen. Once you have composed your note you can add media to it if you want by pressing the little paperclip icon at the bottom right of the screen. I have added lots of pics to my notes while using this app. You also have the option to email these notes, which is also a very nice feature if you would like to share with someone else or send to yourself for viewing away from your phone.  To do that all you do is press the email icon at the bottom left of the screen. If privacy is important the app also allows you to password protect your notes. Last, but certainly not least, the app supports reminders for those really important notes you have saved throughout the day. Reminders are set in the Application Menu.  Then, when you are all done with your note you can just flick the card away and it automatically saves your note! How cool is that?

The uses for this app are pretty limitless with all the options that it has. It may be a simple app but it definitely gets the job done. I can honestly say I have used it quite a bit. This app has definitely filled the void of productivity that was left when I moved from palmOS to webOS. The only complaint I can really muster up would not being able to choose your own color for the note categories. That’s not really a complaint so much as it is a suggestion. Inglorious Apps have been really good at listening to suggestions and improving this app swiftly so I’m sure this will eventually come. I have been impressed with this app so I would recommend all of you to go out and give it a try. It’s an inexpensive app that everyone can use and it is always good to support our webOS developers!

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Has the ability to attach media to notes
  • Can set reminders to notes
Cons

  • Can not set your own colors to catagories
Bottom Line

Notes is a great app that has filled a huge gap that has been present in webOS for a long time. If you are looking for a great app to write down all the things you need to remember then Notes is the app for you.

    Thanks for the review!
A followup question: Is there any way to backup/restore the notes too?

  • ryanstandrie

I don't believe there is currently any way to do that as is the case with almost all webOS apps. However as stated you can email the notes. Also if you are into installing patches and homebrew you can download save/restore from Preware. It does not currently support this specific app but I will ask the developer if he can add it to the list of supported apps.

Any good comparisons between notes and evernote?

i am trying to port over my extensive note collection in google docs into Notes. One problem I see already is that when I import into my Pre, I sort of lose the categories. Like everything is into the “Work” category.

Any way to fix that? I need the categories on the handheld.
