When I told you that I had a second Palm Pre Touchstone Pack that I wanted to give away a week ago you reacted better than I could have imagined. In the last week more than 150 of you sent out the message on Twitter that you wanted the charger and today I did the drawing and contacted the winner.

Leatte Wigen from Washington State in the US is the official winner of the Touchstone Pack (comes with Dock and Cover). The pack was donated by our own community member Pamela Hazelton and the drawing was a success only because of the webOS community. Thanks guys. :)

If you’re sad that you lost this round don’t fret too much. I have another giveaway planned next month. ;)

How Did I do it From My Palm Pre?

That’s the question many of you are probably wondering. After all, I’m still doing the Palm Pre Challenge (for another 9 days) and couldn’t use a computer for this. Although, even using a computer would take a long time to sift through all of the entries.

Here’s how it can be done from the Pre (if you have about an hour to spare): Since everyone had to post the same message using the #PalmPreChallenge hashtag rounding up all the names was easy, but extremely tedious.

With Universal Search on the Pre you type in PalmPreChallenge (USearch doesn’t read symbols as the first character yet, gotta be a letter and not #). Then you go through all 150+ tweets about the challenge and copy the names over to a notepad app (I use ClassicNote).

Once those names are over there, go down the line and number them all (would be easy with a spreadsheet application *coughint*). After about an hour of copying, pasting, numbering and checking for duplicates (some of you thought you would enter 6 times!) you can finally do the very easy task of drawing a random name.

Enter Random.org and the Random Integer Chooser. This site comes in handy for a lot of things (another app idea?) but choosing a random number between two positive integers is definitely the one I needed most today. After I filled out the fields and hit the ‘Go’ button I had my winner: Leatte Wigen.

And that’s it! Thanks everyone for your support and for following along. Keep following along here, on my personal site and on Twitter to be ready for the next giveaway.

As Leatte said to me earlier, “Thanks for making my day.”

I know this is nit-picky, but Universal Search actually does recognize symbols as the first character in a search. I believe they added it in 1.3.5. Also, there's a Random Numbers app in the App Catalog, free!

I should have been more clear with that statement. If you start to type #PalmPreChallenge into universal search, it will actually show bPalmPreChallenge (putting a 'b' where the # should be).
And I totally forgot about those apps (there are two), otherwise I would have used them. Thanks for reminding me!

Odd, mine does #palmprechallenge just fine. Maybe you have a patch installed that's goofing it up?
