preDevCamp Baltimore Wrap-Up

By: , 6/9/2010 4:31 pm | 6 comments

The first preDevCamp of the year kicked off last week on the day before the anniversary of the launch of the Palm Pre. The Baltimore preDevCamp was organized by Alice Carback (@acarback on Twitter) and was held at the Anne Arundel County Public Library.  In attendance were over 30 people from states as far away as New York and North Carolina.

preDevCamp was established as a developer-oriented meetup to share webOS programming knowledge.  Baltimore’s event was no exception.  The day began with Alice giving an overview of webOS programming and a brief demonstration of development using Palm’s Ares environment.  This was followed by cake and cupcakes to celebrate the anniversary of the launch of webOS.  Next up was author Frank Zammetti (@fzammetti) who delved into the art of game development.  Finally, Palm’s Ben Combee (@unwiredben) gave a presentation on PDK app development and how it will work with the forthcoming webOS 1.4.5 release.

Following the development discussions Alice handed out some door prizes.  All attendees received Palm lip-balm (tropical flavor!) and Palm stickers.  In addition, a number of prizes were distributed: copies of Mitch Allen’s Palm webOS and Frank Zammetti’s Practical Palm Pre webOS Projects, t-shirts from webOSroundup, Palm Pre and Pixi touchstone kits from PreCentral, a $150 gift certificate from Aegis, Inc. and a brand new Verizon Palm Pre Plus, courtesy of Palm.

Alice has posted the slides from preDevCamp so that those who missed it can at least see what we saw.  You can listen to interviews with several attendees here.  We encourage you to put on a preDevCamp in your area!  If you need assistance please contact us here at webOSroundup and we’ll put you in touch with people who can help.

As a special bonus, Alice will be a special guest on our upcoming Podcast so please e-mail us your questions for her and we’ll put her into the hot seat.

    … and Massachusetts. Me!

And if a Long Island Dev Camp happens as @PalmPreLawyer just mentioned I'll probably go to that as well.
