RUMOR MILL: Whispers of the New webOS Device Grow Louder

By: , 6/30/2010 7:45 pm | 31 comments

It’s funny: we try not to post mere rumors at webOSroundup, but sometimes our readers get upset because they just want to know the gossip! So you want rumors??? You got it.

Over the past few months, we have received quotes from a mysterious figure named “Jackson” with the inside track on upcoming Sprint hardware. Despite being named as a reputable source, his words until now have only been reported second hand. Well, it seems our friend (yeah, let’s call him that) Jackson has posted a blog of his own, outlining the upcoming 4G devices coming to Sprint. We have no idea if this is the same guy, how good the intel is, or even if his blog will be taken down. But because rumors are fun — and you have nothing better to do — read his juicy excerpt about new webOS hardware after the break.

In his blog post titled “Upcoming 4G Devices,” Jackson says Sprint will release 8-10 new 4G devices in the coming year, and goes on to list details of five of them. These entries from LG, Motorola, HTC, and of course our beloved HP-Palm have processors ranging from 750MHz to a whopping 2.0GHz, and cover the gamut in features. But you don’t care about the others, right? What about the famed “C40,” the offering from HP-Palm?? Okay, okay… we posted the excerpt below, in bulleted format so you can more easily read the features:

“3. HP c40- This was formerly known as the palm c40 until the company was bought out by HP. This device will be the first of HP’s new mobile line featuring webOS. It will have:

  • A large 4.0+” high res screen
  • LCD [?]
  • 8mp camera
  • 720p recording
  • just an overall larger and better device than the Pre

The time frame for this was supposed to be Q3 2010 but that could be pushed back to Q4. HP is doing some changes to the UI as well. From what has been floating around the mill its all good things though, making web browsing faster and gestures more useful. If your[sic] not a fan of android, and don’t feel like hopping over to ATT for the iPhone this gadget will be a perfect one for you!”

So there you have it folks. Now go forth! Ruminate and speculate about what you have read! Yes, as we cross the webOS desert, sometimes we crave to see even mirages, so hopefully this will whet your appetite. But remember… these rumors are fun, but until we see something more concrete, they’re just rumors.

flattr this!

I'm on AT&T, but this is great news. It means I'll eventually have something to upgrade to with webOS on it. YES! I love webOS.

So, if true, would this mean Palm was working on this device BEFORE HP acquired them? I'm assuming so since the deal just went through this week. I'm just curious, if Palm had this c40 in the wings, why did it still decide to sell? I haven't followed from the beginning but they didn't think something better than the Pre would have saved them? I hope it is a weOS device, my problem was the with the (physical) Pre, not the OS. I would give it another try. ;)

this makes so freaking happy!! even if it is a rumor, i just want to be able to know that comparable specs and hardware are coming to the market that will shut eh-phone and the droids up…i will promote this phone SOOOOO hard. this might not be true, but let me dream if only for a little while : )

  • Blayze04

I hope its true. Though it does seem like every platform these days has those specs. Hopefully Palm can do something to differentiate their device. And please please please Palm no more plastic screens!

  • Soo

I hope they will sell them unlock like what Dell is about to do with the Streak. Let us GSM user not have to wait for another year to get another Palm device!

  • Iroc371

Hate to be negitive but “A large 4.0+” high res screen” is just too big. I like being able to pocket my phone. A little bigger would be ok and higher res is always welcome but I just don't feel like carrying around a brick.

am I alone in hoping they don't drop the palm name? I'm old enough to cringe at memories of the old packards, I would be sad to use a hp phone. Of course I would use this new device if it were call anything, lol just love my palm branding. Can't wait though, hope it keeps a true keyboard

I think it was somehow contractually obligated for at least one more phone to Sprint, the original Pre's are now over a year old, sprint initiated a 1-year eligibility option for Pre early adopters and we're eagerly holding out for something new. The hardware has had its issues, so we really need at the very least a better “build quality” handset. I'm hanging in there, just because I like the WebOS so much.

I hope starting tomorrow we see the news fly out HP like pandora's box. I have expected that the C40 would be a 4.0 inch device as the model number suggests. I am really looking to HP-Palm for a new device. As much as I love my Pre, it's starting to wear down. The “o” and spacebar aren't working so well as of recently. (It is a launch day Pre I never replaced it)

“sprint initiated a 1-year eligibility option for Pre early adopters” – never heard of this before! Would love a reference!

I forget Sprint's term, but customers buying Pre level phones were always eligible for yearly upgrades. They pinned me at that level when I first signed up for a Centro a few years back.

Hopefully they continue with the physical keyboards. Also, I hope they do something to differentiate it from the other phones in the same tier. I'm kind of bored looking at the slew of “slab” style touchscreen phones.

It is called Sprint Premiere and it is available to anyone spending more than $70 (I think) a month on a single line or $120/month (1500 min, unlimited all data) for a family plan. As long as you're on time, you get it after 3 months.

Actually, this guy may not be far off. 720p recording was actually a feature said to be available in the Fall 2010 to webOS (the Pre can do it; it just hasn't been enabled for whatever reason as of yet). Given the age of the rumors of the C40 and the 720p knowledge, it stands to reason this rumor has legs.

However, I'm REALLY surprised that the specs of the rumored C40 seem to fall way short of what HTC is offering. Part of me wants to believe that HP's (formerly Palm's) R&D wants to compete with the offerings of HTC's Android lineup and iOS4. It's time HP/Palm put the pedal to the metal, start sourcing serious hardware resources, and put something out there that can match or best HTC's Android offerings with webOS.

hope it will not be a 4+ screen. 3.7 with a good-fantastic resolution and please please please again a vertical slider….

4.0 screen is a little too bi.g should it comeout i'll take 1 lol. 3.7-3.8 is big enough. 2.0ghz with webOS 2.0 would be perfect. Hurry andbring it in at least 4th quarter hpalm.

although quite a few phones have very similar specs this is going to be a webOS device . One device to rule them all ;).

    The picture creeps me out.

  • Terry

I hope it comes to VZW very soon.

htc EVO 4G did not look too big and it is a 4.3 inch device. Iphone has a 3.5 inch screen and a lot of wasted space.
I tried EVO 4G at the Sprint store but did not like Android a whole lot. Until Gingerbread it is not a fully baked platform for me.

Heh heh I figured someone was gonna say that. I tried looking for a decent one of a woman whispering to a man but couldn't find any that either worked or wouldn't direct me to a porn site.

  • Soorma

Hey, just a little clarification… The Jackson on Smartphone Community Forums is the same Jackson that has leaked other information before. I'm soorma from Precentral and Jackson himself told about his new site…so yeah, that site will be our new source.

  • http://twitter.com/corq corq

The Sprint addon is something called “Premium” (I believe) and I think its for all phones on sprint, but it seemed to coincide with the Pre rollout. Any phone/data plan $69.00 or more makes you eligible and its automatic on your account at that plan point. Arthur described it pretty well.

  • Terry

You would think Palm wouldn't want to release a phone on Sprint after what they said and try another carrier.

Why didnt you mention you should utilize the mic and textual content together with your voice? Overlooked ALOT of different extra necessary options
