1.2 GHz Overclocking Kernel released for the Palm Pre

By: , 7/18/2010 4:26 pm | 19 comments

Are you interested in really pushing the upper-limit of speed on your Palm Pre? Have you tried the F105 Thunderchief Kernel, and thought that it was still just not fast enough for you? Then maybe the newest PsychoKernel is for you.

Now that the 1.0 GHz threshold has been passed, it was time for kernel developers, like unixpsycho, to keep pushing the limit. The SR-71 Blackbird Kernel is the newest, and fastest kernel for the Palm Pre. The good folks at webOS Internals have warned any potential alpha testers to have webOS Doctor close at hand when installing this new kernel. It may be super fast, but it apparently does not play nicely with “weak” Pre’s. webOSroundup’s own Ryan St. Andrie tested out SR-71 today, and had problems getting his phone to boot properly after install.

Here are the specifics for this new kernel.

* 1.2GHz
* NextGen Screenstate with temp monitoring
* Westwood TCP Congestion algorithm.
* Memory tweaks in kernel (no more TMC errors)
* No compcache
* CPU temp patches added
* Only with Screenstate governor. Scales from 250MHz

On top of testing the CPU overclocking, this kernel is also testing out some new screenstate code that may very well make their way into the other overclocking kernels. One of those features that stands out is when the CPU temperature reaches 55 C, the CPU auto-scales back down to 500MHz. [Ed. Generally CPU temps over 50C are not good, and if are overclocked and see your temp reach that range, you'll want to do what you can to cool your device down.]

Just to re-iterate, this new kernel is in the initial alpha testing phase. Despite the sheer awesomeness of running your Pre at 1.2GHz, we have to WARN any potential testers that should anything go wrong and you brick your phone, you are pretty much voiding your warranty. If you do test this out, be sure to use extreme caution. If you are a little on the skittish side, and still want to venture into the overclocking world, you will probably want to start out with UberKernel.

All warnings aside, its very awesome to see the potential future of webOS. Hopefully we will see a webOS device that has a processor that runs at a stock speed of 1GHz.

    I tried this last night and I had an endless boot issues. I Doctored and went back to the F105A Thunderbird.

    Nope, way too risky for my tastes. But very interesting experiment. (does android have similar kernels?) I'm very happy so far with my uberkernal. I don't smell anything burning so far and it's significantly faster.

      Yes, android has similar kernels. For example, the HTC EVO has already been overclocked to over 1.2.

    I talked with an Android friend of mine and he said no one has successfully rooted the incredible to be able to overclock it. It seems that the open android is closing its doors to hackers and modders.

      Android is not closing it's doors to anyone. Motorola is the one that locks down their phones.
