Astraware working on MULTIPLE titles for webOS

By: , 7/21/2010 5:54 pm | 20 comments

Now that the PDK is available for developer use, webOS users are going to start seeing PDK apps from developers other than Gameloft and gluMobile. What are the most popular (and only) PDK apps right now? You got it! Games. Palm is definitely doing a lot to catch new developers, and one that they hooked was the UK company, Astraware.

If you are not familiar with Astraware, they are a mobile software development company that has made apps for iOS, Android, Windows Mobile, Blackberry, and Palm OS. They hold a special place in Palm OS history for being one of the first color games released for Palm OS all the way back in 1998. Astraware is also the company that has licensed (for mobile) one of the most popular puzzle game of all time, Bejeweled.

Astraware has a ton of games for other mobile platforms. Now that they are able to release PDK games for webOS, they are doing just that.

Here is a rundown of the games that are already in development: Astraware Casino, OddBlob, and Astraware Sudoko (all top ten sellers according to Astraware’s website). Astraware is also planning on getting a few more of there games ported over to webOS, including: Police Range, Astraware Solitaire, and Astraware Boardgames. There is no mention of Bejeweled as of yet. But due to its immense popularity, we’re sure that its only a matter of time.

So how long until we see these new games? A quick peek at Astraware’s twitter postings from this afternoon, and it appears as though it may be any minute now.

Here’s a good one:

@headgamer We’ve submitted a beta to Palm already, waiting for them to approve and then there’s 3 more titles following behind shortly!

Followed shortly after by this to Palm Dev Relations team’s Chuq Von Rospach:

@chuq Sorry to ask a newbie question, is there usually a delay between a beta app showing as published and the download link working? ^DO

Keep your eyes peeled. Looks like the games may be released as a limited beta at first, but webOS users are going to be getting some more good games very shortly. Bejeweled on webOS countdown, starting in 3….2….1….

UPDATE! In the comments below, Alison Barclay from Astraware was nice enough to inform us that it is up to PopCap to decide whether or not Astraware can have a license to develop Bejeweled! for webOS. Currently, Astraware has the rights to develop Bejeweled! for Palm OS and Windows Mobile only. It is up to PopCap to grant that license to Astraware… or someone else. Takers?

Good to hear. Must say thank you and give props to astraware for supporting WebOS. Any word on productivity app developers?

Non-game PDK apps is something I hope comes out soon. I'm very interested to see what other developers can make with the PDK in the non-game arena.

    Hi Brad

Nice to hear there’s great anticipation for our games. Bejeweled is a title that we developed under licence from PopCap Games for Palm OS and Windows Mobile. We don’t have the licence at present for webOS, so the next step is really up to PopCap.

Looking forward to seeing your games in the App catalog. No Bejeweled?

PopCap are the original creators of Bejeweled. As I mentioned above, we only had the rights for Palm OS and Windows Mobile. We don't have a license from them to create Bejeweled for webOS at present, so it's up to PopCap as to whether they choose to develop, or have someone else develop, Bejeweled for webOS.
