Oh Noes! Tiered Data Plans for Verizon Users?!

By: , 7/20/2010 11:02 pm | 17 comments

Well folks, it’s looking like our fears from way back in June are being confirmed: as of July 29th, Verizon will be moving away from “unlimited” data plans to a tiered solution for data consumption. As of right now the pricing and data cap details have not been released, but we imagine it to be something close to AT&T’s tiered plan ($25 for 2GB, $15 for 200MB, etc.). At least webOS users will still enjoy then free Mobile Hotspot.

This may not be bad news for all users. Some users who do not consume a lot of data may get away with a cheaper bill. However, on the flip side, power users like us here at webOSroundup will more than likely see a heftier bill. This is all assuming that existing users get forced into this sort of plan. We certainly hope not.

So now 2 out of 3 carriers offering webOS smartphones will have tiered data plans. Will Sprint be next? Our once beloved unlimited data plans got capped at 5GB and now if you own an HTC EVO you pay a $10 a month premium. Lets certainly hope that Sprint does not follow Verizon and AT&T’s lead as not everyone can afford to pay an astronomical phone bill each month.

They already charge $30 for data so that’s not that bad for the non power user, but users of the Droid X and such are gonna be going over 2gb

Especially if they giving the free hotspot on the Pre Plus.

Data buckets … Get yerrr Data buckets heeeerrre! Well, unless you have a current contract. Then renewal or upgrade time you will need the wisdom of Solomon. It’s rare taking a subsidized phone is best long term. New Gadge is Soooo shiny & tempting.

Will current users be affected? Or just new people getting a contract starting July 29?

To my understanding, existing users will be grandfathered, at least for some amount of time.

I highly doubt VZW would not let current users keep the plan they’re on.

I would say that they are legally obligated to allow current customers stay with the current plan, and cannot modify a plan unless they wish to have a class action lawsuit.
