PDK Hot Apps Competition… IT’S ON!!!

By: , 7/16/2010 11:54 pm | 10 comments

Well, it’s a bit later than we all expected, but Palm’s PDK Hot Apps competition has begun, and will run through September 3oth. With this play to entice developers to port their iPhone apps to webOS will hopefully result in a deluge of new apps in the App Catalog.

The timing of this is pretty curious to us, since webOS 1.4.5 has not been released quite yet. In very basic terms this means that a small number of PDK apps may not run properly after carriers (ahem, Sprint/Verizon/AT&T) release 1.4.5 to their subscribers. As we describe in our in-depth article, this is due to a bug in 1.4.5 that Palm has chosen to remedy by asking developers to make appropriate changes to their apps.

It is 1.4.5 that introduces the permissions bug. Hence the large delay is seeing it released here in the States. Palm has notified the developers of those small number of PDK apps that will get broken on how they can incorporate a workaround into their code and is encouraging them to apply the workaround and push out an update. Users of 1.4.5 can even fix it themselves by installing the homebrew 'fstab' patch via Preware.
