Woz says: buy a Palm Pre

By: , 7/16/2010 10:33 am | 20 comments

By now, unless you have living under a rock for the last few weeks, you know about the dreaded “grip-of-death” issue with the new iPhone 4. Apple is even holding a press conference today to address the issue. What they will say beyond “Don’t hold it that way!,” we don’t know.

This week, investigative journalist, Henk van Ess, interviewed Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak. Not only did Woz acknowledge the iPhone’s antenna issues, he also recommended that you carry around a second phone for backup. And what phone did he call out specifically? You guess it, the Palm Pre Plus on Verizon.

If you can afford it, carry a second Verizon phone for backup. Another option is to carry a Verizon mifi and rely on Skype on your iPhone. I have used this mifi technique to rescue my own, and others’, iPhones on occasion. If you buy a Verizon Palm Pre, you get free mifi on it so that is possible[sic] the best ‘compromise’ solution, to carry a Verizon Palm Pre along with your AT&T iPhone 4.

While Steve’s suggestion is a good one, we have to disagree. Just ditch the iPhone altogether and pick up the Palm Pre Plus on AT&T.

I'd have to disagree with that last sentence Just ditch AT&T altogether and get a Pre on Verizon or even Sprint. You know, so you can actually use that "phone" app ;)

Ooooh…AT&T takes one to the gut.

    Ouch. :)

My only reason for saying the AT&T Pre Plus is for folks already on AT&T. Glad that I picked Sprint all those years ago, and have not left since.

Saying carrying the iPhone 4 and the Pre Plus is the best ‘compromise’ isn’t the same as saying the Pre Plus is better than the iPhone 4. You fail at logic.

I'm not saying at all that he said to pick the Pre over the iPhone. Just nice to see Woz call out the Pre. And considering this is a webOS-related site, of course we're going to pick the Pre over the iPhone.

just another reason that a group of happy Pre plus owners can take down (at least in voting competitions) bigger and not necessarily better phones…

Wow, Steve Jobs just admitted that Palm makes good software during the 'anntenagate' conference…

"And we're pretty good at making software, we showed that in the iPod… other people are good at it too, like Palm, but we brought great software to the smartphone space"

Of course, he's probably just thinking, "that's because half their staff came from Apple". So it's still a self-serving compliment.
