1.4.5 is here! (UPDATE: Bug is fixed!)
Yes you read the title correctly, 1.4.5 has finally landed for Sprint users! You can view the official changelog here. As many of you know, this update hit Europe back on June 30th but had been delayed for several weeks in the U.S. due to a bug that affected PDK apps. Palm has asked the developers to make adjustments to their apps so that this bug does not affect them.
On the surface, this does not appear to be a big update. It is a significant upgrade in the sense that Pixi owners will now have the ability to use PDK apps and we can expect PDK apps to start flooding in now. The update for the Pre is 8mb, and 38mb for the Pixi. Happy gaming!
There is also some other good news for all homebrew users out there as we will get our first taste of what a hybrid app is all about. As many of you know the guys over at webOS-Internals have made their wIRC app a hybrid SDK/PDK app. We have also been told that we can expect other hybrid apps to come from the homebrew community so keep your eyes peeled for those. Also, for all you homebrew users out there if you are using the “problem” patches be sure to uninstall them before running this update or you may run into a couple of problems. You can find a full list of these “problem” patches here. Last but not least, do not worry about using any overclocking kernel from the WebOS Internals crew as all the kernels have now been tested to be OTA safe.
In conjunction with the release of 1.4.5 we now have the PDK Palm Hot Apps contest going on until Sept. 30. However we would think that since the update has been so delayed for the U.S. that Palm may be extending that to a later date. We think it’s safe to say that we should be getting a flood of new PDK apps in the app catalog. So, don’t forget to get out there and show all the new developers some love and purchase the new PDK apps!
Update: We are receiving several reports that people are having issues downloading the update. It seems that the update times out when trying to download. Palm is aware of the situation and have sent a message on twitter to let everyone know they are working on the issue. We are assuming that this problem will be resolved promptly. Of course, we’re all saying “are you friggin’ kidding me?!” just like the rest of you. Please stand by.
Update2: We are now getting reports via Twitter that the update is officially working. Happy 1.4.5 update to all Sprint users.
