App Update: Evernote is “on the back burner”

By: , 8/23/2010 2:43 pm | 28 comments

You hear that? That sound you just heard was a big collective sigh…

The developers over at Evernote are taking a “wait and see” approach to their webOS client.

A lot of people have been complaining that the current webOS Evernote client is pretty riddled with some serious bugs. So what is a paying customer to do? Ask the devs!

Here was the sad, sad response.

We’d love to see the WebOS platform succeed at HP, but our resources are limited, so the WebOS client is currently on the “back burner” while we wait to see what happens with the platform.

Thanks

- Dave Engberg (Evernote)

We have been big fans of Evernote in the past…in fact it was one of our first Top Picks, so we are pretty saddened by this news. I do understand, however, that you only have so much dev time. At least they were upfront about it all. Some of the big devs just drag us along for months without saying anything.

flattr this!

I hope they realize how important the webOS platform is quickly. I started using Evernote because of the webOS app and immediately upgraded to a Premium account because I realized the potential. However, the issues I've had with Evernote on the Pre keep me evaluating other options. News like this doesn't help me want to keep Evernote as an integral part of my workflow.

Well, I'm glad that I stopped using it a while ago. But the point has been made before, and I totally agree. Leaving it in the catalog with the bugs is bad business. Sorry Evernote, you have lost me as a user for good.

Since I'm the one who's kicked off this crusade, let me just say: it's one thing to decide not to spend developer time adding features–that's disappointing, but at least somewhat justifiable.

It's another thing entirely, though, to refuse to fix bugs in a shipping product–particularly bugs that can result in lost data (as has happened to me). Evernote should announce that they're discontinuing support for the webOS client and remove it from the catalog, or fix the bugs. Their current stance is simply irresponsible.

    • bjshedwick

Definitely appreciate your effort. Evernote needs to pull their app from the catalog.

    • David Baxter

I agree with that. Developers should fix their bugs.

This is not shocking in the least. Palm waited too long to release a 2nd gen phone, and now with the CEO debacle at HP, and confirming the release of a tablet while the new phone is still in rumorville, who would be stupid enough to invest anything into WebOS right now? I adopted WebOS on the original Palm Pre three weeks after the Sprint pre-release in March of last year and I absolutely fell in love with it. But I'm getting so frustrated with the mismanagement of the Palm franchise. This is EXACTLY what Apple would do. They are notorious for having an epic product release and screwing up the end game. My Pre is currently broken and I had to go back to my old Moto Q. If I don't hear some good news soon about the next gen WebOS device, I'll probably switch to Android.

HP WE ARE FRUSTRATED. We are only going to see more companies ditching WebOS and putting it on the back-burner until they do something about the antiquated hardware.

Actually, it _is_ shocking to me that they would refuse to fix data-losing bugs, and yet keep the app in the App Catalog. It's irrelevant how successful webOS has or hasn't been in this context.

I understand developers refraining from developing apps for webOS in the first place, or not adding new features. That's definitely on HP and Palm at this point–they need to take steps (that I'm convinced they're taking) to make the platform more attractive. But failing to fix bugs is all on Evernote.

I have lost data on my Evernote app before, and I was pretty upset about it. I think this is more of a testament to how poorly the Palm franchise has been managed than it is anything else. WebOS users are probably not a very big chunk of Evernote's marketshare anyway. When an app developer says that it's not worth their time to fix major bugs because the future of WebOS is too uncertain, that means there is a major problem at HP and they need to address it quickly. If anything, they should just remove it from the app store.

I honestly LOL'd upon seeing that

Why wait for others to do something when we can do it.

Frankly, I'm so disappointed with Evernote at this point that I'm not inclined to keep using their solution even if some other developer managed to make a great client for it. And, ultimately, how ironic would _that_ be, if they did?

      • bjshedwick

I think I agree with on this. Its not like they are a one or two man developer. I think I'm done for good.

This just saddens me. Evernote is critical to what I do every day since I work across multiple computers in various locations. Although I'm not quite ready to drop Evernote completely, I will hold off on signing up for a Premium account since I was considering it. I hope they get their act together soon.
