Review: Moon Info Pro

By: , 8/2/2010 1:14 pm | 15 comments

While deciding to review this next app I asked myself, “What in the world would I use this for?” It isn’t a game, it doesn’t do much in the way of productivity, nor does it in any way shape or form resemble anything I’d want to use every day. But then I thought back to my days as a competitive bass fisherman and how I used moon phases to predict the best days to get out on the water for a good catch. Where was Moon Info Pro by Roboter-teile.de apps when I needed it?

Using moon phases to predict good and bad times to fish and hunt has been around for many, many years. Sportsmen count on solunar charts to pick the best time of the day or night to catch their bounty; many of them swear by it.  Sportsmen and amateur astronomers alike will enjoy Moon Info Pro for webOS to keep track of daily moon activity right from their phone.

Moon Info Pro gives you anything and everything you ever wanted to know about the various phases of the moon for any particular day. A single page contains information about lunar cycles, the day they will occur, the time, and even the distance to our mysterious neighbor from earth for that particular day. The bottom half of the screen displays a calendar which you can adjust by month, day, and year. Tapping the upper half of the screen displays a pop-up with even more information including moon rise/set and the position of the moon in the zodiac for you astrology geeks.

Want to know what phase the moon will be in on July 27, 2018? Just plug in the date and a photo of the moon will animate to display how it will look to the human eye on the selected date. The developer has done a really nice job with the layout and selecting any part of the screen will display moon data of some kind. I found I didn’t understand a lot of the lingo that was thrown at me while using the app, so it was a nice surprise to find a glossary included in the system menu listing the many terms used in Moon Info Pro. Nicely done for newbies like me.

Pros

  • Complete data on moon phases
  • Adjustable calendar
  • Included glossary

Cons

  • No exporting of data

Bottom Line

Astronomers and sportsmen alike will enjoy Moon Info Pro for webOS for helping to gather complete data on what the moon is doing on a particular day/night. It won’t win any awards for playability or pizazz, but it serves a particular niche and does it well.

Interested? Go here to download Moon Info Pro directly to your device!

flattr this!

Nice review… Found this app a few weeks ago pretty randomly and have been really enjoying it.

Another useful application for this would be for the wiccan and pagan among us who also happen to have smartphones ;) (I know.. really small group of people!) I'm not, but my brother has some pagan values… He loves knowing when the full moon is. I showed him this app and he _loved_ it :)

For technical information concerning the moon, this is a really terrific application. The potential customer base for this program would multiply many times over though if it could be combined with common lunar calendars somehow. Many religions and cultures rely heavily on lunar calendars including Jews, Muslims, and Chinese.

Developer here, at first thanks to Jesse for the review.
@L. Sacks, why do you find the technical informations terrific?
There are 6 pages with technical information (and 1 with some astrological things). You have geocentric (ecliptical and equatorial) and topocentric position of moon, Moon/Sun-Rise/Set, Apogee, Perigee, Node passes, twilight infos and more. And there is a glossary which describes the used terms.
What do you miss? I'm still working at the programm. Please write a mail or a comment on my WebOS site to help to improve it.

    THX, Joerg

BTW, there is an open beta version available in the Palm beta feed (until August, 27th.), now with calendar export.

Sorry for my last post, I made a serious translation error and confused terrific with terrible. Embarrassing.
I will think about your ideas with the common lunar calendars.

    Sorry, Joerg
