It’s Official Now: Docs To Go Not Coming to webOS at ALL (UPDATE: RIM acquires DataViz Inc?)

By: , 9/3/2010 3:32 pm | 13 comments

Well color us shocked. (/sarcasm) Long, long, long after DataViz Inc. had indicated that they were “suspending” further development for webOS, they have finally announced in an open letter that they are in fact canceling any and all plans to ever develop for webOS. Claiming that their loyalties lie more with making “business sense” than with Palm, they have made a conscious decision to leave webOS users twisting in the wind. They defend their position by claiming they lacked “technical help” from Palm for too long before coming to this conclusion. (We have to wonder if this means further development on their already-installed Doc Viewer has halted as well.)

All is not lost, however. QuickOffice has made a splash or two about their plans to develop an office suite for webOS, and although no names were used in their letter, DataViz Inc seemed to acknowledge that. Perhaps after falling asleep at the switch, DataViz realized they would not be first to the document-editing game on webOS and decided to leave the platform alone altogether. Hopefully it won’t be long before webOS users can prove DataViz wrong.

The floor is yours, QuickOffice. Show ‘em how it’s done.

UPDATE:

There is a rumor making the rounds that RIM, maker of Blackberry mobile devices most targeted at the enterprise market, has acquired DataViz Inc. This might explain why after months of silence regarding Documents To Go for webOS they have suddenly made today’s statement of no longer pursuing development of that product. There has been no official statement from RIM or DataViz on this development. We’ll let you know if and when this new twist develops into something a bit more official.

This is a terrible statement from DataViz, and completely biased. They put this huge blame on Palm saying they didn't give them enough attention and that Palm had no developer resources because of their financial status. Completely unprofessional and undocumented.

Even if I wasn't a fan of Palm, if I saw this, I would be offended. Absolutely no business sense. This is just like the whole Apple/Adobe thing, absolutely atrocious.

DTG's reasoning was stupid. So the average webos user can't load up a stand alone app? If DataViz didn't think they could do make the application, they shouldn't have called themselves a Palm partner. By the way, former Palm users will remember the huge number of incremental upgrades that DTG charged for to try to make an obnoxious buck. QuickOffice will be successful on webOS phones because of the pentup demand. But the big goal is to put their editting product on a webOS tablet and make the tablet a real useful productivity tool.

Try the fact that they were bought by RIM… THAT'S the REAL reason… :-/

Is it just me or does that “teaser” of Microsoft seem eerily similar to the catchy phrase that’s been thrown around in this WebOs community… I’ve seen alot of Win 7 Os reviews and such, frankly they do not impress me at all and being that one of the main features is the “link” to Xbox live, do they really think the business community is gonna take it seriously? Maybe I’m being to harsh because I’m not a “gamer”
