Palm Suspends New webOS Dev Approvals for webOS 2.0 SDK (UPDATE: No more Freeze!)

By: , 9/3/2010 12:33 pm | 22 comments

Well someone’s ticked. In a rather decisive move, Palm has temporarily suspended approvals for new webOS developers wanting access to the webOS 2.0 Software Development Kit (SDK). This was in response to a recent violation of a non-disclosure agreement on the part of an unknown developer enrolled in the private beta program. HP/Palm has also indicated on Twitter that they are running an investigation as to where this leak came from.

The leak basically confirmed what most of us already suspected: that a virtual keyboard for webOS is in the works. Whether this virtual keyboard will apply to webOS phones, tablets, or both is still unclear.

Because early access to new OS builds is imperative for webOS developers to create new apps and optimize their existing apps, we can only hope that this matter is resolved quickly…  and that some developers learn how to keep a damn secret.

Update - Palm has just notified everyone that the suspension is over and early access is now open to new devs.

Thanks for representing the devs and the importance on keeping NDA's! Unlike the other site…Precentral which not only leaked it but claimed to be on the side of devs even though they knew this would hurt everyone.

If it wasn't PreCentral it was going to be another website to report it. PreCentral did what they are here to do which is report, and report and report. It is a bad thing that because of it now palm is freezing the early access? Yes, but please people get real this isn’t some fantasy land its the real world, things are going to be leaked left and right up and down.

And calling for Derek (who published the post) to be fired is ridiculous. What palm needs to do to solve future leaks is do some type of conference show/tell the features that are coming in the update and thats it dont release the sdk until you talk about it.

And all this because of a keyboard, the homebrew community already have one. Plus we all know that that keyboard was coming

      People need to relax

I appreciate that WebOSRoundUp has shown restraint when it comes to leaked information. While the press has the right to freely publish information, it also has the duty to act responsibly.PreCentral has done a lot for the WebOS developer and user community, but in this case, they have caused a great deal of harm to those very same developers and users that have helped it become a successful site.

no biggie. Lessons learned though. You have to be responsible and take the heat when you make a mistake. Just because someone else would have done it… Doesny make it right.
virtual keyboard.. Not a big deal. Freezing access to sdk … Big deal.
I’m sure palm got the sdk to the big devs anyways… Freezing it at this point.. Not a big deal.
precentral is a great site. Derek… Is a great guy. This write… Class act.

it’s not that they leaked info about a v keyboard it’s that they leaked something at all! Trust and contracts apparently mean nothing anymore. To act like derek didn’t know what he was doing when he posted some classified info he knew was “leaked” on a website hundreds of people read daily is being ignorant. Yes he should be fired for harming the trusted relationship between Palm and it’s dev community… Wat an idiot

    • jbrandonf

It would have gotten out anyway, it’s not his job to keep the relationship between Palm and it’s developers. I’m not going to shoot the messenger like you are.

Ridiculous. Derek's just doing his job. We all enjoy reading it. Stuff goes down. Fingers go up. Get real guys. Palm doesn't need to over react. They have the right and the ability to make the devs sign non disclosure agreements. If the dev breaks that, its the dev's fault not Derek's.
