‘PalmPad’ to Be Like the iPad?
HP said back a month or so ago that a webOS-based tablet device possibly called the PalmPad is coming in the first quarter of 2011. That’s about all the real news that has come forth about the actual device, and webOS fans like us are so hungry for news that any tidbit satisfies the palate if only for a little while. Such is the case today, as according to Engadget, HP’s Peter Helm can be quoted as saying:
Now that we are officially part of HP, we are going full speed ahead with our applications initiative. Our proprietary operating system, webOS, is now the OS that will be used in HP’s mobile devices. This includes mobile handsets as well as tablet-style devices similar to the iPad. We will accordingly leverage Palm’s ability to innovate and the scale of HP’s vast install base and distribution network previously unavailable to us.
Sure, the statement is a bit full of fluff, but it teases one point: tablet-style devices similar to the iPad. Taken literally, that could mean that the PalmPad will be very similar to the iPad in form and function (shocking, we know). More than likely, it could just as well mean what we’ve assumed before: that a webOS based tablet will be designed for and marketed towards a similar audience to that of the iPad’s. Hopefully we’ll know much more certain information by the first quarter of 2011.
(On the other hand, HP… you know things are bad when a site like Engadget is pulling at straws for stories on webOS. Please… give us more than this!)
