App of the Day: OfferEye
Once in a while a webOS app will come around that is both useful and innovative. It has the ability to tie in to the device’s various hardware and software components, all while helping you through your day. OfferEye by developer Cora Apps ($2.99) takes our App of the Day prize by providing this sort of experience on your webOS device. Our own Roy Sutton even brings it to the table in our most recent podcast (webOSRadio #19).
OfferEye is a search engine rolled into a handy shopping companion that ties into the phone’s camera application. It allows you to take a photo of an object, send it to the OfferEye servers, and in a minute or two, receive results relating to your photo from various search engines . Let’s say, for example, your friend is in the middle of reading a book you’d like to purchase for yourself; simply open the OfferEye application, take a picture of the book’s cover, and receive results from various sources including Amazon, Yahoo, and other mobile-enhanced shopping sites.
The app does a nice job of identifying the object in the photo even if it does take, at times,
up to two or three minutes to fetch the results. It does an even better job if the object has text on its face, or if it’s a familiar object one would already find on store shelves. I did, however, take a photo of a standard desk calculator and OfferEye offered up results of various calculators up for purchase on Amazon’s mobile site. Tip: bring up the Google search results for your query and select the “Local” tab in the browser to search results at stores near your GPS location.
