Palm Pre 2 Photo Sample Emerges

Pre 2 Sample Photo

The Pre 2 appears to shoot photos at 2576 x 1928

We’ve gotten our mitts on what appears to be the very first released photo taken with a Palm Pre 2.  Twitter user @germboy cleverly spotted that the above image was uploaded via Twee2 by Engadget’s Joshua Topolsky - and you’ll notice that the resolution is 2576 x 1928 which is a whole lot larger than any current webOS phone could manage. The quality is pretty darn good from what we can tell – and if Engadget has their hands on a Pre 2 you can bet there are some exciting times coming in the very near future. View the full size image here.

Thanks @germboy for the sleuthing!

UPDATE: It seems like this is the real deal – reading the photo’s metadata reveals the Camera Make is ‘Palm’ and the Camera Model is ‘Pre’. Thanks for the tip, hagster!

flattr this!

  • hagster

so that’s 5 mega pixel. It’s plausible that its from a phone, and probably is. Any reason to believe its a palm. Anyone checked the metadata? Hagster

Metadata is interesting – Camera Make is Palm and Camera Model is Pre – have updated the article to show this. Good call hagster :)

  • Andymac85

Twee is only available on webOS, as far as I know.

  • Palm

Shouldn’t that read “Palm Pre 2 Photo Sample”? As it stands the title makes it sound like its a sample photo of the Palm Pre 2.

    • http://twitter.com/errade errade

      Fair point! Article updated :)

Sadly, it looks like the Date Taken in the EXIF meta data is still missing.. so annoying!

urgh, one of the most annoying things about my Pre’s photos!

Sweet. Might have to pick one up and give my g/f my pixi + if it comes to ATT.

  • hagster

well done Dan and Germboy. I think they call that a scoop. Glad to help out with the meta data. Can anyone work out if its auto focus? Would comparing the focal length to known sensors reveal anything?

  • Jake Morrison

You can attach images already on the phone to Twee, so it may have been taken with a real amera and transferred to the phone.

    • http://twitter.com/bshedwick Brad Shedwick

Wonder if he would go to all of that trouble. Especially since the EXIF info actually says that the camera was a Palm Pre

  • DigitalYout

I did read somewhere online last week that Joshua T supposedly had a Pre2. Here is hoping it packs some other little surprises like a larger sized screen. And of course all the other tid bits that were leaked last week. Fingers crossed!

that is a badass picture of a terrible looking stereo.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ISIWRQ7IJBRA7K5ZGQL53X2DCA Pickle Fart

Incidentally, I have this stereo and it’s so amazing that I still use it as my main stereo in my livingroom.

It’s a Panasonic and it has the MASH DAC. Those are three-way speakers with a separate cord driving the low range speakers.

If you see one buy it right then!

  • SFHandyman

The photo was posted via Twee2. Josh was asking which twitter client to use and revealed he chose Twee. Is Twee2 out yet? Is it a webOS 2.0 app?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000147090478 Chris Clark

      twee2′s been out FOREVER
whether its a webOS 2.0 app will be up to the devs.

    • http://twitter.com/leejcj jason lee

I believe twee2 is just what “Twee” the paid app shows up as in twitter. Twee Free shows up as “Twee”. That’s… at least how i remembered it happening. Maybe Twee upgraded as I switched to the paid version.

Just checked and Twee is already on Twee 2 in the current catalog. :/

  • Joenlow

looks good, stoked for this to drop.

I hope it can take macros

      • Anonymous

Quality macro shots of business cards, receipts and such would open up new app opportunities. Not merely bar code lookups of products, but tie-ins to stuff like Neat Receipts and such would be great.

Look at the full-size image. Now take a shot with your current Pre and compare. There’s no comparison. The current Pre does some super-processing/compression that makes the full-size image horrible. I only found this out recently. I was under the impression that the non-full-size view of images on my Pre looked great and thus it had a great camera, etc. But look at your shots full-screen. Anyway, this image is much clearer and cleaner. Sure there are still some artifacts, but the improvement is great. As far as the exif data, that should be from what took the shot, so it has nothing to do with whether it was taken elsewhere and posted from a Pre. Exif data can of course be spoofed, but do you really think Josh would take the time to do that just to play with us WebOS fans? Highly doubtful. Hopefully this means that more info about this phone is immanent and we won’t have to wait till November to see it…

Josh has been known to like webOS if you listen to the podcasts. I mean he’s totally a Apple fan but he always says nice things about webOS when it does come up.

The part that I cannot fathom is how reviewers will compare the Pre 2 to the newest handsets from Android and the emerging WP7 crowd. The form factor is SO different for those devices that I am really anxious and curious to see the comparisons. I cannot wait for webOS 2.0 vs the competition reviews. I know ya’ll probably feel the same way.

    • http://www.webosroundup.com/ DanR

Everyone is bashing the Pre2 as not advanced enough but when you look at the specs of other phones, it’s pretty much on par. I’d really, really like to see an improved screen size or at least resolution. And I’m hoping webOS 2.0 brings improvements in features, speed, and battery performance.

    • DigitalYout

Didn’t Blckberry borrow the Pre form factor, and how about the Dell Venue I believe it’s called. I believe other than the current screen size of the Pre, the portrait qwerty keyboard is appealing to more than a few people. If HPalm does release the Pre2, I hope they market it well. And of course the construction has got to be solid on the ne device. They need to show off what the Os can do that either iOS or Android cannot.

Ive said it before and I will say it again. I am perfectly happy with the Pre2. I dont want some god awful “look at me” phone. I want something that I can put in my damn pocket! All I need is webOS, a faster CPU, and solid hardware. Give me that and Im a happy camper.

    • http://openid.glr.ch/rgloor rgloor

      +1

      Same with me.
A little bit more speed, a better battery life, improved hardware, webOS 2.0 (with hopefully improved PIM’s)

I don’t care what others bring out (except that competition is good in general).
But there is nothing like the special Palm sauce out on the market.
And this “The Zen-of-Palm” is what really keeps me locked at Palm.

  • Suruat

I would like webos on a bigger screen, with front facing cam, 1gz processor, and 4g… thats all thankyou… keep the rest the same if u like…

  • Anonymous

So is Topolsky only using this in the neighborhood where he lives and never taking it to the Engadget offices?

  • JMWPainter

I have a boom box just like that!

    • http://www.webosroundup.com/ DanR

Actually, now that you mention it — so does my sister! It’s an aiwa, right???

    • Anonymous

I had one that was bigger, but it was more empty space than electronics.

  • Anonymous

So why aren’t we reading all about this device on engadget?

    • Captain Obvious

obviously because he’s reviewing it still. DUH.

      • Anonymous

Isn’t engadget supposed to leak photos, specs, etc. when they get early prototypes like gizmodo did with the iphone 4?

  • http://twitter.com/dvdmon Levi Wallach

Other than a bigger/better screen, the main thing I’ve been hoping for is a compass, an SD slot, and a camera that can take macro shots (for bar code scanning, ocr, etc.). I don’t think any of these are likley for the Pre II, which is why I’m hoping for them to show up in the nextgen device in 2011. Otherwise I think software can take care of most of the rest, but that means Palm needs to provide API hooks for the camera and mic, add support for speech synthesis, speech recognition, larger array of file formats, including Audible, etc. No short order, but I’m hopefull that at least some of this will come with WebOS 2.0 within the next couple of months.
