Verizon to Launch Tiered Data Plans October 28th
Last month we brought you confirmation of Verizon Wireless’ plans to move to a tiered data plan pricing scheme. Now we have news of the switchover day for the new pricing structure: October 28th. The news may not be as bleak as we previously feared however.
“What!”, you say? Wasn’t this the end to unlimited data forever on America’s largest cellphone network? Not so fast, McGee! Verizon’s data pricing for smartphones is now as follows:
…$15 for 150MB with $0.10 / MB overage, or $29.99 for unlimited access. This stands in contrast to AT&T, which offers another 50MB at the $15 price level or 2GB for $25 with no unlimited option.
Yep you read that correctly. Verizon will continue to offer their unlimited data package for the same price as it is offered currently. It’s just in addition they have added a lower priced plan that caters to smartphone users who don’t consume large amounts of data. Current customers can also have their existing data plans grandfathered in without penalty.
This new pricing structure really comes across as a win-win for Verizon subscribers. They get the option to continue their unlimited plans or bump down to a lower priced limited plan if they prefer. This is in stark contrast to AT&T’s tiered plans, which do not offer any sort of unlimited data for new smartphone customers.
Just remember that this new tiered plan pricing is strictly for 3G data. Verizon has said that they will release more information on their 4G LTE plans and pricing as the launch date, supposedly sometime this quarter, gets closer. Until then, Big Red customers can continue to enjoy the unfettered freedom of unlimited data.
