App of the Day: eBooks by Kobo

By: , 11/15/2010 9:15 am | 9 comments

It seems eBook readers and apps are all the rage these days. You would be hard pressed to find someone that doesn’t own a Nook or Kindle. The few people who don’t either live under a rock or have downloaded the apps for these popular eBook readers on their phones. (And to be honest, the Kindle app for iOS is pretty nice and an absolute delight on the iPad.)

We all know that webOS has so little market share that many major apps have not been ported to it. This leaves us with no Kindle or Nook app like many of our Android and iOS counterparts. Don’t fret, though – because webOS has an answer! eBooks by Kobo is a free eBook reader app that has been on webOS for some time now. If you haven’t given it a look, you really should. All of the books in the app are priced at or around the same price range as most of the poppular eBook vendors. There are even a fistful of free classic novels for your personal enjoyment. Kobo has its own online bookstore and recently formed a partnership with Borders (the second-largest bookstore chain in the United States) this year, so there is no lack of good books to be had.

So, if you’re looking for the best way to get a little reading done on your webOS device eBooks by Kobo is the app for you. Check it out.

flattr this!

There is a new, native version in the works. Taking advantage of the new SDK/PDK and thus making the import of eBooks much faster.
Many different eBook formats are supported.
And there is a super committed developer. AND…
    …it is free.
One of my favorite apps. :-)

I’d second pReader: ported all my old eReader books without having to fire up Classic to read them. I use it every day.

Preader is my favourite and most used webOS app. I have been successfully porting Kindle books to it for close to a year. The developer is incredibly committed to this app and keeps releasing new versions. Preader should be the app of the day if you are talking about ebooks.

I honestly did not know about pReader when I wrote this. I will be checking it out and give a full shakedown on it in our podcast. Just goes to show you that the app catalog is getting bigger and still has much that needs to be discovered.

Last time I used it, the Kobo Reader would not save your place in the book. That’s a deal breaker.

Does not work correctly and several flaws at the core user data base in downloading books. Would much rather download from gutenberg instead of a faulty sales built flawed ereading program.
