Review: Buka
Looking for a fun, mindless game to play while sitting at the stop light? If so, then this game is for you. All it takes is a quick finger to fend off enemies to keep this little blue ball called Buka safe. The game has a slightly different twist. It’s not the most action packed, adventure-filled game but it is entertaining and easy to pick up and put down.
To maneuver through the game, hold your finger down to create explosions or shockwaves that will annihilate the so called “Baddies” that are trying to attack Buka. The longer you hold down your finger, the larger the explosion. The game is entertaining and quite addicting after a few times of playing it. The ultimate quest is to find the “Happy Place”.
You can also “feed” Buka with yummy green pieces. Move Buka to the green piece with your finger, and Buka makes a cute noise to indicate it’s been fed.
Buka is a very fun arcade type of game. The graphics are good and the sounds are great. There is some childish type language that is used that might get on your nerves after a while, but it kind of adds to the game as well. I actually found myself wanting to protect Buka after a while.
You’re judged on your accuracy, how many Baddies you kill, how many green pieces you eat, and how long you manage to keep Buka alive.
The difficulty does increase fairly fast. You think you’re doing well at beating out these Baddie creatures, then all of a sudden they’re all over you. So it’s a little hard to keep up and your fingers have to be fast! Multi touch would be great so you could blast more than one Baddie at a time.
The graphics and sounds of Buka are simple, crisp, and clean. There’s nothing too fancy going on and it’s easy on the eyes. There’s nothing exceedingly intense, and the movement is smooth and fluid. Everything works well in this department.
The sounds are nice, too. Buka’s voice, a soft beeping, is easy on the ears. The explosions are deep and the shockwaves have a gentle ‘ping’ sound to them. The soundtrack is present without being distracting.
If you like action/adventure games this may not be your bag, or it may take you some time to get used to. If you like a game that takes some time and investment to get good at, Buka will be a pleasure for you. It is worth trying, if only for the simplicity it brings to the table and its high replay value.
Pros
- Cute character design
- Challenging
- Easy to play a quick game if you just have a few minutes
Cons
- A little repetitive; could use more variety
- Needs multi touch
Buka by Hexage is a nicely animated, addictive, challenging game with cool graphics. It’s set to a simple stage, but has fluid animation, punchy graphics, and realistic explosions.
