A Foreword on webOS for 2011

By: , 12/31/2010 7:21 pm | 33 comments

webOS fans, we salute you. As we’ve come to the end of this year (and decade!), we’ve seen a lot happen – and not happen – for our beloved operating system. As always, we keep our eyes peeled to the future with our unbridled optimism that 2011 will be the year for webOS. Let’s be frank – we’re fans just like you, and just like you we’re equally frustrated that things have not quite moved along to satisfy our voracious appetites for progress… any kind of progress. Many of our phones are on their last legs, and we’ve lost many of even the most ardent fans to other operating systems.

January 2010 was a pretty exciting time for webOS fans…  we were getting updates at about a monthly click (remember?), we had just gotten 3D gaming, and were surprised to get video recording and editing, all on the same day. January 2011 is no less important of a time, but we enter it with a great deal of uncertainty. What, if anything, does HP-Palm have up their collective sleeves?

But we at webOSroundup continue to soldier on alongside you, noting those faint glimmers of hope that may one day grow into a conflagration of webOS treasures. The Palm Pre 2 has made it to North American shores and will likely be on sale on Verizon before the end of January. CES is approaching, and although HP will not have a presence, your friends at webOSroundup will be attending the Palm room to see any kind of juicy tidbits we can pass along to you.

Yeah, it’ll be slow going. But we’ll be there with you every step along the way. If you cannot wait and must move on, we wish you well… just be sure and keep one eye on webOS, though… and remember that we’ll always keep a light on for you upon your return.

For now, let’s put down our phones, eat, drink, and be merry… as we usher in the new year. From the bottom of our hearts, we wish you and yours the happiest and safest of new year’s. God Bless.

flattr this!

wow your New Year’s article makes my Happy Hollidays one look like a sweaty turd :p

The truth is out. Good, we can guess you are going for truth this year. Good on ya, mate!

I’m not sure what kind of response you want from that…

I better see HP making some webOS new year’s resolutions they follow up on. Palm lost a lot of great people this year, but definitely gained some great new people as well. I am a bit hopeful, but HP needs to follow through on their support.

Thank you guys for all you’ve done to support and promote WebOS in 2010. As a decade-long loyal Palm user I was both pleased and disappointed by the move from the Palm OS to WebOS. I guess that’s often the nature of change. In spite of my disappointments, however I plan to hang in there with HP Palm for the foreseeable future and am hopeful that good things are coming.

Thanks again and Happy New Year!

My New year would be a helluva lot better if we(webos users)had new software or at least something to look forwards to.My Birthdays the 5th and I’m switching to an Evo

    • Joseph

You will definitely appreciate the EVO. There’s a HUGE world of Market and non-Market customizations available!

Actually, this decade started January 1 this year.

    Decades start on the 0th year (2000, 2010, 2020, 2030, 2040, etc.) and end at the end of the 9th year (2009, 2019, 2029, 2039, 2049, etc.)

This decade will end Dec 31 23:59:59 2019.

Touching and Hopefull… Long Live WebOs !!! Long Live WebOs !!! (…cmon guys shout with me).

  • Joseph

IMO, everyone who cares about webOS should be up in arms over how it is being royally slaughtered by the competition due to a complete absence of meaningful OS and hardware updates from HP. Even the “newcomer”, WP7, added over a thousand apps in December, going from 0 to 5,000 in 3 months. Android and iPhone app libraries are growing parabolically and both top over 200,000. webOS was featured as one of PC World’s 20 top tech failures of 2010. Palm websites (both US and internationally) tout the ease of system upgrade as one of the key features… yet there has been no upgrade since July, and that “upgrade” introduced several severe bugs for primary functions like PDF View and Doc View. The YouTube viewer doesnt allow account logon… the list of significant problems with the pre-installed HP Palm suite is very significant. Yes, a nice looking OS; yes, it’s easy to go from Stack to Stack and to stay in control of the big picture of what’s running, or quickly close apps; yes, it’s understandable there would be some post-merger “shimmer.” But enough is enough: waiting until March for full webOS 2 release to consumers is completely UNACCEPTABLE. Get it out by Valentine’s Day without further excuse.

    • Joseph Ziehm

HP likes a finished product without errors and that is what they are aiming for. Which means fixing the previous errors in the Palm development and showing the door to others who continued the tradition of fail. Rahul seemed wrapped up in gaming and did nothing including bringing along Sqauresoft etc; imagine what 2.0 will be like now.

      • Joseph

I am trying to imagine how it can it be 2.0 if it’s different and better than 2.0? OK, to try to make sense of your occultic gyrations, are you saying that we should be content to wait for 2.x, because it’s so much better than the presumptively crappy 2.0? So my point is WHY was 2.0 promoted as a great advance if it wasn’t a great advance? And if it was a great advance, why wasn’t it generally released? Things are just not adding up. I do realise there can be a time lag between out on new equip to out for all equip, but what exactly IS THE PROBLEM here, becoz IMO HP is keeping us in the dark for too long, and I for one am starting to lose faith that the problems are even cogently resolvable at a code level, let alone at a business delivery level. In other words, to be blunt, is webOS even TECHNICALLY solvent?

        • Joseph Ziehm

People are still using it and the Pixi+ is free with a two year under Verizon. Makes sense that it goes toward low income users.

        • http://www.webosroundup.com/ DanR

Your issues and concerns are all valid ones which we’ve discussed in detail on our podcasts. The beauty of it all is the best way to let HP-Palm know what you think is by speaking with your wallet… and buy something else. If they put out anything that’s technically advanced and solvent enough for your tastes, then you can come back to the platform… just as I said in my piece. :) In the meantime, HP-Palm doesn’t necessarily “owe” us anything. Certainly if they want 2011 to be anything but a disastrous year they’d better get movin’. We’ll see what happens.

          • Joseph

That generally seems fair; I appreciate your attempt to be NPOV. That said, I honestly have some significant amount of trouble with the concept that failure of multiple advertized core features should be met by passive equanimity. There is definitely a role for some Zen when thinking about webOS, but, while agreeing with almost everything you say, I personally judge that HP Palm AS A BUSINESS does “owe” its customers some remediation for the progressively dysfunctional product it sold. Anyway, let’s reminisce over the days of gDial Pro, functioning PDF View, and so on. RIP, webOS phones…

          • Anonymous

Did you really just compare webOS from the gDial Pro days to webOS today? I was there man and it wasn’t half as good as it is now.

          • Joseph

I see. Or rather I can appreciate that you are trying to make a point. Which is, if I understand you, that webOS is better now. OK, help me understand in what way, exactly? Because, yes, in my opinion not only has webOS slipped RELATIVE to the competition, even worse, its CONSUMER deliverability to MOST people (the average user of a consumer phone doesn’t aggressively compensate with Preware, overclocking, and all the other tricks) has declined in ABSOLUTE terms when compared to this time last year. I was citing gDialPro as an example of once beautiful features (and I could have gone on about numerous other concerns such as PDF View and the pre-installed Doc Viewer) that do not now work. Defending the current state of this OS, and accepting the slow pace of remediation at HP of these defects, is your choice, but I am standing up and calling these problems out as both distressing in themselves and potentially symptomatic of an OS that will never be technically remedied for the smartphone platform. OK, after that rant, I apologize, but I again politely ask you, what exactly is better about webOS now versus, let’s say, early 2010? Because I can think video, and that’s really it, and that’s a feature phone capability, not a smartphone capability per se, and it was always a curiously absent feature to start with (i.e. I am saying it should have been there from day 1.) So what “new half” are you experiencing?

          • Anonymous

Yes webOS has slipped in mind/marketshare from the gDial Pro Days. Hell it was on a downward spiral in that sense from the moment the Pre hit the market. I’m saying as an OS it has improved with every single update. The PDK, UI tweaks, and yes video recording/editing. Try doctoring back to 1.4.1 or less and you will get a feeling of the little advancements that were made. However yes webOS has fallen far behind the competition in many ways. It has actually surprised me that Palm has managed to keep this thing afloat while being integrated to HP. Its nothing short of a miracle that webOS didnt die but it didnt. Regardless of where it stands right now HP is now involved in this so things are bound to get better. I have seen your comments on several articles and in many ways you are spot on. My question is if it upsets you so much why are you still using a webOS device? I appreciate your passion and participation in this blog but seriously do what makes you happy! If you want a WP7, iOS, BB, or Android device please go grab one.

          • Joseph

I discontinued active use of my webOS devices a while ago as I really was forced by work needs to restore smartphone functionality. One webOS phone is serving as a hacked controller interface in a hobby project, a second is presently serving as a music player for backcountry trips or jogging outings that get too muddy for new equipment, and I gave two away to people who wanted to use them as secondary phones on shared minute family plans, so their kids could have a handset and access to the nice email and text UI. Finally, my GF still uses a webOS device as a “back up” in her backpack/handbag “just in case” her other carrier has a system issue. These are the most legitimate uses of the hardware I could come up with. I agree that there has been a sense of disappointment from launch onward. I suppose the reason I still troll this site is the sense of regret that, with so much potential (it’s an extremely friendly and functional interface for people new to smartphones, and, as you allude to, the developer aspects have been interesting) I have been very saddened by its “comatose period in ICU”, as I appreciate the “feel” of the UI.

    Good article.

  • Bryanmorales1

Yeah, thanks HP-Palm hope you bring Pre 2 to Sprint by September 2011 before by 2yr. Contract ends so I can keep WebOS alive. Thanks HP-Palm you’re still the King of Multi-tasking. And I hope Pre 3 comes out..

  • Michael

I just read an article on a huge virus snatching info off of droid operating phones. This is inevitable on the big systems. I’m hoping the webOs stays out of the spotlife just enough to avoid this problem. I’m looking fwd to new things with webOs, but as with everyone else, my patience is waining. We need something new pretty quick!!

    • Joseph

Typically the terms are “spotlight” and “waning,” and I am not sure what new Droid virus you are reading about (care to cite your source/s?), and larger user base systems typically remediate their failings more quickly than webOS has, but YES, we would love to see real things happening with webOS.
