App of the Day: ZumoDrive

By: , 12/14/2010 5:39 pm | 10 comments

Cloud storage is all the rage these days. In all honesty cloud storage is the future. Why lug around physical storage or store anything on your smartphone when you could store files elsewhere? That is where cloud storage comes into play. All webOS users currently use cloud storage whether they realize it or not. Your Palm Profile is stored in the cloud and that is how we get all of our purchased apps back when we change devices. So, if the cloud is good enough for our Palm Profile why not use the cloud for everything else as well? We all know that storage is a limited thing on our beloved smartphones so lets free it up a bit with ZumoDrive!

ZumoDrive has been a hit across almost every major mobile OS (and non-mobile OS!) on the market and webOS is no exception. All you have to do is go to the ZumoDrive website, sign up for service, and download the ZumoDrive app. If you complete their short little “Dojo” training you will pick up 1GB free storage on top of the 1GB they give you for signing up. That gives you a grand total of 2GB free storage with the option to buy more if you would like. In the end, ZumoDrive is probably the greatest cloud storage service for your media. This app will make an awesome addition to all webOS devices so it rightfully earns an App of the Day from us. Now, if we could just get the developers of this app to port over ZumoCast life would be perfect!

flattr this!

In answer to your opening question, we carry the data to ensure we have it when we don’t have internet, for use with specific software/tools and for speed of access, oh and security – after all the cloud is just another name for someone elses server on the internet.

Also, we may use te clod for backup – but we rarely use that data except for recovery. And no it’s not quite good enough even for palm. I’ve recovered several times and some apps have not come back ( EA games for instance).

Either way the cloud is the future. I think in the next 5 years or so physical storage will give way to the cloud

Nope, Cloud will be there, but everyone likes data right where they can get it. USB, Bluetooth whatever you use is not as vague as cloud, and more immediatte – there’s still a huge requirement for immediate access and I don’t see it being replaced. Like the paperless office, it’s possible but not entirely practical (too much risk, too many dependancies). People rave about the cloud like people rave about the ipad, great concept, but a bit pointless, so if you are a cloud fan at least zumo is more palmpad than ipad! (hope that all makes sense).

Love this app. It has replaced my live mesh drive that I had been using. I dumped it when they stopped supporting XP. It also annoyed me that Microsoft doesn’t (and probably never will) have a decent way for my pre to access live mesh files. Zumo is much more platform neutral.

I use ZumoDrive over Dropboxify. Dropboxify will not run properly on my computers while using non admin accounts. However, ZumoDrive works perfectly for all user profiles.

I got this service after reading this article. I must admit it is great and even signed up via my Pre Plus. App could still use the ability to sort and move files but other than that I love it. Now I am starting to like “To the cloud!”

Is there any difference between this app and DropBoxify on webOS? I love DropBox but willing to try something new provided that it adds something to the overall experience.

I use both but Zumodrive is better for media playback on a mobile device. So for all my music/movies I use Zumodrive.
