Leak! The new tablet is codenamed “Topaz” and there is a bluetooth keyboard coming!

By: , 12/17/2010 3:37 pm | 25 comments

The super ninjas over at Engadget are reporting that the upcoming tablet is flying under the codename “Topaz”. Futhermore, they have a screenshot (shown above) of a new bluetooth keyboard accessory.

The keyboard, interestingly, has a windows key on it so apparently it is also for more than just webOS. However, it also is said to have some webOS specific keys as well.

As for the tablet/Topaz, Engadget’s insider reports that it is “extremely slick with no hard buttons on the front and a design that echoes the design of the keyboard”.

The release date is still slated for first half of 2011…which if I remember correctly is a bit different than the Q1 2011 we have heard in the past.

Finally, Engadget reveals that Palm will have a “low-end teen phone that is something like a Pre with no keyboard”. It has the codename Castle, which we have heard before.

All in all, a pretty big scoop of info. What do you think? You more excited now?

That keyboard looks awfully sexy…

It reminds me of the microsoft arc

Or maybe more like the HP Wireless Elite keyboard

I doubt this is true, if only for the codename.

Cool. Now leak the Pixi 2.

I call bs on this being the keyboard for the tablet. The webos tablet is supposed to be webos only. The windows key stuff indicates that this is for a hybrid webos windows desktop like the current HP touchsmart series with the touchsmart ui on top of windows.

What do you mean by the Windows Key stuff? The image doesn’t show a Windows key (you can’t even see the far left of the board) and it says “webOS function keys” which could explain the top row of keys…

“Interestingly, we’re told the keyboard features a Windows key in addition to some webOS-specific keys — we’d guess that HP will sell it for general use as well.”

        from the Engadget source

Yeah, I have no clue how I missed that. I checked the source after I posted that and forgot to delete my comment.

      supposed to be?
what’s wrong with a tab that runs both? It would be the only one of it’s kind that runs win7 as well as a mobile OS.
would HP set themselves apart? Yes.
would I buy it? HELL yes. With anice BT KB like that, I’m all set. HP Palm, please make it happen!
will they offer a webOS only pad, I’m sure. We have all been waiting for that.
but a leak pointing to a tab running both… Is very exciting IMO.

WebOS is considerably lighter weight than windows 7 which is probably why the slate has higher hardware demands and gets crap battery life as a result. This would also be why mobile operating systems exist.

Also maybe because HP has drawn a line in the sand and said that it’s slate 500 is for enterprise and runs windows and that a separate WebOS tablet is coming and not a peep has been said about a tablet running both? Indeed very little has been said about the tablet running WebOS and judging from what we can see about HP/Palm’s pace as of late (ahem WebOS 2.0 ahem) it would be amazing to see one tablet out of them let alone two.

Makes sense to embed webos in all hp devices with virtual machine capabilities down the road.
Hp has lots of time before the platform whithers and dies, so they may as well get it right now. This will be an easy place for developers to distinguish themselves, and HP has nothing to lose to take this long-hall approach.
Still, nothing is impressive about HP’s ability to get anything done.

The HP Palm “Mothership” has arrived. I predict 100,000 apps by end of 2013. “Fun” is back.

    • SallyWagg

I’m confused… Why would any product specs list show features NOT available? It seems counter productive to highlight anything negative… My $0.02: BS.

  • Chris

And I predict every new device will have a double rainbow hologram sticker on the back. Heres to waiting to see what happens first lol.

  • Thatpalmguy

I predict Jan 1st will come after Dec 31st and we will be in year 2011!!! Whowho!!

wow, this design is really slick and to apply that to a 7inch palmpad it would be THE ipad competitor.

  • http://sorli.com sorli

Oh I like news and also agree that HP could make a dual beast runnimg both WebOS amd Windows 8 imbedded. Bring-it HP and I’ll buy 1 and probably 2. Sorli…

Would b killer. Want to conserve battery, unplug and catchup on the interwebs? WebOS. Want to plug in and crank out some work? Win 7. Want options ? I do ;) what does HP do better than Apple ? Custom build netbooks with tins of available options. I hope they make it. I will buy it. Nice looking KB btw ;)

I’m starting to get excited again about HP and Palm. I was starting to look at android phones because my day 1 pre is almost as long in the tooth as I am, but not now. NOTE TO DEVELOPERS. Both my wife and I will be getting a pad and phone when our contract is up

I hate to rain on some parades, but the keyboard having a Windows key doesn’t mean that webOS has been ported to x86, nor does it mean that the PalmPad will dual-boot Windows. More likely, Palm realized that their QWERTY Keyboard uses a ridiculously commom method of connectivity, and that buyers might be tempted to use the keyboard with any number of other devices they already own. Like, I don’t know, some of the laptops and desktops HP sells that have a Bluetooth radio built in.

    • Quentin

Seems like you aced it, bro. All the speculation of “something big for webOS” is SO empty, so much a waste of time. webOS is dead until Enyo. Get real peeps.

All of this news is really cool news but what about those that have had a Palm Bluetooth Keyboard. They only work on PalmOS but not on WebOS. I was wanting them to let the old ones work along with making new ones that folded away or finding a developer that would make it possible with an app when bluetooth control was available.
