HP CEO: New Products Will Ship a Few Weeks After Feb 9 Announcement

By: , 1/28/2011 11:28 am | 25 comments

In a recent interview with BBC News, HP CEO Leo Apotheker helped shed some light on the timelines for new product releases:

“HP will stop making announcements for stuff it doesn’t have (So long, mylar screens? -Ed). When HP makes announcements, it will be getting ready to ship.”

Mr. Apotheker then specifically added that the products launched on 9 February will be on sale just a few weeks later.

We suspect this means tablets first, but either way you can color us happy! At least we’re not hearing the word “months” anymore. Stay tuned for more…

Does that mean that their announcements will be delayed? Seems like they’ve taken forever for new WebOS devices. But only two more weeks so that is joyful :)

  • DigitalYout

Dan did you read the part where he demonstrated webOS on his assistants Pre and demonstrated “True Multitasking”? I’m glad he knows what webOS is and how to use it.

  • Phenoum

Heck no – they’re launching phones within the “Few weeks” and tablets later

    I hope so anyhow!

Hmm, “a few weeks later” could be synonymous for “the coming month” :)

  • David Cardenas

Does anyone know if WebOs 2.0 is ever really going to be pushed for current deviced? Or is it a lie?

I just wish the carriers would leave it up to the consumers to install the updates. Let the main company release it and leave it up to us to install.

      • Philipp

        Dito

      • John

To be fair, it’s understandable. The carrier is the one who will have to provide the customer service if an update breaks something.

        • http://twitter.com/tsaunders tsaunders

Give a disclaimer then and leave it up to us. Say this is not carrier sanctioned and you use at your own risk.

        • Joseph Ziehm

If the carrier cannot provide the services on their firmware and programming it is their own fault for wanting to be a monoply. Verizon screwed up this year in the new every two department just to land iPhone. And, they also screwed up with their own internal servers earlier this year following the Anna Chapman debacle.

I would expect webos 2 to be part of the few weeks he’s talking about.

Dude, didn’t you get your over the air update?

  • Den

So far, the announcements specify only tablets. Is there any reason to think a phone would also be offered?

    • http://www.webosroundup.com/ DanR

No doubt phones will be announced. They’ve indicated so. What’s unclear is how central a role phones will play. That part is anyone’s guess, and one that we’ll have to wait ’til Feb 9th to find out. … But phones WILL be announced. You can bet on it. :)

  • Lostsole

If that is true, and they do announce phones as well as tablets, then hopefully we could see a new phone in the weeks after the announcement. I hope that’s true. Of course, they could introduce a tablet and just show a roadmap of the phone announcements. In which case, I think I’ll have to get a stinkin android as my Pre is about dead. I think it was fried from being overclocked too long. :(

    • Dan

Get a new battery first! They cost like $4 on Amazon. Fixed my problems!

  • Pixi Defender

Ay Dios mio, donde esta mi Pixi Dos?! Lol, serously though, where’s my Pixi 2 palm? I’d better see it Feb. 9th.

  • Chris

Feb the 9th is taking forever to come and this web os update.

  • Joseph

It’s about time they stopped trying to sell things they don’t have. HP Slate (you know, the windows version) is horribly back ordered right now. HP shipped the ACCESSORIES tho, for a DEVICE that is STILL a MONTH from expected delivery (WHICH THEY ANNOUNCED FIVE DAYS AFTER SHIPPING THE ACCESSORIES. They happily charged me for the ACCESSORIES and for the ACCESSORY S&H for a machine I don’t have, instead of putting it all in one shipment and saving me the S&H. I am pissed in case you are wondering.

  • Joseph

By the way I ordered before New Year so the month is from now, because it was 2 months back logged. I just can’t figure how shipping a spare power cable made ANY sense. And I just love how there are pages and pages of Slate reviews on the HP site, mostly dating from before the FCC clearance, talking about user experience. I mean DOZENS of reviews. And we are not talking geeks here, we are talking “apparent purchasers.” Right. Anyway, we’ll see if it’s any use when it actually comes and not rely on these “reviews.” My point is that HP kinda hasn’t got it yet, but time will tell whether Mr Soft Spoken German will reshape this clunky…. ah did he say TANKER…..?? Nah hahahaha

HAAAAA! Remember this? A few weeks, which in HP parlance is also known as “summer” aka possibly up to 7 months from now. What bugs me is this article is only a few weeks old. I could see if he made this statement in November/December, but you would think they’d have everything pretty much locked down one month out as far as finishing the product.

    Crazy.
