Okay, How About “HP TOUCHPAD?”

By: , 1/19/2011 4:11 pm | 18 comments

When HP filed for their “PalmPad” trademark, we all cringed.  Today, Engadget reports that HP has filed for a new trademark name: the “HP TouchPad.”  … Perhaps since the word “pad” has gone from being the butt of all tablet humor to a ubiquitous reference synonymous with mobile computing, “TouchPad” for some reason doesn’t make our eyes bleed quite so much. Of course there’s no telling what device in particular this could be referring to, but HP has indicated this trademark applies to multiple products including tablet computers. As Engadget rightfully points out, HP already owns the trademark to “ClickPad” for their laptop trackpads (we’re using one as we type this), and it also is in the spirit of dropping the Palm name altogether.

So whaddaya think? Perfect? … Or are we still jealous of RIM’s “Playbook?”

I thought this term was already used to refer to any laptop’s touch-sensitive mouse area?

    • Dan

Read above. ClickPad. ;) The TM is for the whole name, too: “HP TouchPad.”

Still, “HP TouchPad,” when referring to a tablet running webOS, doesn’t seem like that exciting of a name. They’re just pinning their company’s name to a generic term (see also: Apple Magic Trackpad); of course, this is just my opinion, but it really doesn’t appear that original.

But, I admit, the important thing is the tablet itself – I’m fairly certain, like anyone here, I’m going to buy one, regardless of what it’s officially dubbed; even “PalmPad.”

I’m still hoping that they will use the name PalmPad, so the brand Palm will get a boost!

Waited very long on the first palm pre, which never reached the dutch market. I got an imported pre 2 for one day and I love it. The webos really rocks, and I don’t believe there is a better os out there!

It would also maintain continuity with the “Touchstone”.

    • Jeremy

      Tada!

I’m half expecting further “Touch” references in both hardware and software, so that with the HP ecosystem you can stay…. “In Touch.”

Are we ever going to see screen shots of WebOS 2.0 for the Palm Pixi. Nearly all screens have come from the Pre could we just call it what it is as Vaporware?

    • Joseph

the Pixi webOS 2.x.y pictures got pulled for being pornographic

  • Ortwin

Touchpad = giant Touchstone for tablets?

  • T. Diehl

“HP Touchpad” is a terrible name. It sounds like something that would be found on every HP laptop/netbook. It’s a very generic name with absolutely no personality. “PalmPad,” “Topaz” and “Opal” are all much better names.

Playbook still wins for the best name for a tablet…

However TouchPad doesn’t make me want cut myself like the PalmPad did.

  • ShmungerWOS

I think they should name it the HP TouchTab if they really want to make a line of Touch??? Products…

  • Al

PalmPad was a much better name and I hope this is not forshadowing the demise of the name Palm.

  • Beni

I agree, playbook is the best name… I think adding your company name to everything is annoying. It’s not known as the blackberry playbook just PLAYBOOK… Can we come up with a better name?

Honestly, I want a pad like Slate that runs windows 7 with a Solid State drive. What I call the Pad for the rest of us. IPhone 5 is rumored to jump to to a dual CDMA /GSM (Qualcomm) chip so it can go to either big carrier. C’mon HP, stop telling me about things you may introduce in 2012 that may be yesterday’s tech in 2011.
