ONE HUNDRED MILLION App Catalog Downloads!

By: , 1/13/2011 10:19 pm | 20 comments

That’s right friends, a full year and a half after the birth of our beloved operating system, App Catalog downloads have actually surpassed one hundred million. Congrats to Palm and HP…  now let’s turn this trickle into a tsunami, yes?

I so wish that developers were not penalized for a hundred bucks each and every time. If they want development why are we getting hit the hardest on that?

    • David

You need to check again, they eliminated all developer fees back in June. Both to register and to list and application.

      • Joseph Ziehm

It took awhile for them to left that documented yesterday that they finally waived it off of their page. Are they crazy or just ignorant? I could take my programming on the net or cnet.com and make more.

  • Joseph

Agree 120%….they are so desperate not to lose an administrative fee it’s ridiculous, given that THEY have essentially killed the user base volume that might justify their fee. It is now also recognized that webOS dev takes longer for some user product. Two hits on devs. Come on HP, get real, slash the fee to a nominal $10 that will prevent crazies dumping rubbish but help good devs since the installable numbers are gonna be small OR alternatively rebate devs for every 50 downloads… come up with some way that everyone can win. Seriously, this is YOUR future HP, and you have to wake up.

And it would be much more than that if Palm would’ve realized that world consists of more than 8 or 9 big countries. If I could pay with my PayPal account (I mean, I can do it on Ovi Store from Nokia, why I can’t on Palms) I would’ve spent at least 100 USD until now for different stuff I want or need (and ihave Pre for three months only now). I spent something like 400 USD for different Palm OS titles and also around 250 for WM software so I don’t have trouble paying. But I want to be ABLE to pay and don’t want to move out of my country. BTW: I live in Croatia, Palm has been almost forgotten there for almost 6 or 7 years just because of their stupid carrier policy.

I Agree With Every Comment That Has Been Posted. H/P There Is Not Any Reason For You To Be A Nickle Waiting On A Dime. Yes, It Is True That Your Aquistion Of Palm Cost A Few Dollars(We Are Not Disputing That) But Do You Truly Have A Need To Continue Taking Advantage Of Your WebOS Developer Base. After All H/P Each And Every Developer Consistently Pays You The Development Fees That You Demand But Yet In Return What Do They Get. O.K. They Get The Ability To Develop Apps For The #1 Operating System In The World(Only My Opinion) And In Return They(The Developers) Hopefully Get The Opportunity To Display Their Talents And Try To Get Enough Revenue Generated To Then Reinvest That Revenue Into Future Projects(Apps) For Us WebOS Enthusiasts. It Does Not Appear To Me That You H/P Is Playing Fair Will All Involved. It Is Very Similar Regarding Us(Your User Base) To Have Had To Wait All Of This Time To Receive Adobe 10.1 Flash When I Personally Was Told By Adobe Who’s Corporate Office Is In San Francisco, Ca. That 10.1 Was Completed And Sent Off To You 9 Months Ago. Something Does Not Seem Right. H/P It Is Time To Stop Being The Playground Bully And Start Giving Back Of What Has Been Given To You In Regards To “All” Of Your Faithful And Devoted Fan Base. Enough Is Enough. I Would Like To End By Saying If You(H/P) Do Not Push Out 2.0.1(Sprint) Between The Third And Forth Weeks Of March As You Have Told Some Of Us You Are You Then May Just Frustrate All Of Us WebOS Enthusiasts To A Point Of Throwing Our Hands Up. We(WebOS) Enthusiasts Have Been More Than Patient With You Since June 6Th, 2009…..

      Nice. Every word is capitalized…

      • Organicwillie

        Yeah, What’s Up With That?

      • http://Bungie.net “In The Coming…Weeks?”

Better than every letter being in caps. Trust me.

    • David

Funny thing, I totally didn’t catch that until you said it. I think you found your signature style! Thank you for losing the all caps. I hope HP is following this and understanding what they are losing daily.

Once again folks Palm has waived the developer fee almost 6 months ago. That ain’t the problem. The lacking user base… THAT’S the real issue.

    • David

I remember the fees being waived. But lets be honest… Was that too little too late? HPalm needs to do some in house creation, get the apps # up to 10 or 15K, and ensure they are top notch, usable, and wanted apps that are simular to other OS. Then you will have an interest base that will give Dev’s a reason to want to create more apps and the ball will roll on it’s own.

      • Joseph Ziehm

David it is HP in the court developing the apps. While Palm, Sood, and the creator of WebOS dropped the ball in underclocking, providing developer fees, and taking an operating system which is the greatest and just about destroying it. As a programmer I see a larger marketshare for role playing games designed around the text and deep story line orientated play. The problem is though thay Sood left for a closed source product after leaving us in a heap. HP may have had to show him profits and losses since his tenure and the terrible lack of confidence and supplying apps in the Pixi+. 800 Mhz, 256 RAM, and 3dfx support and he squandered it in threatening voided warrenties. I for one am glad Rahul Sood is gone he left the Pre and Pixi users suffering and was basically a kiss @$$ clone of Dean from Code Monkeys.

    • Joseph

Thanks for the heads up. I suppose one problem is the remarkable way in which they have failed to advertise that. And the others are the current tiny phone user base, an absence of a declared pathway of smartphone future capabilities (and therefore a loss of sense of what would be feasible), and a concomitant perception (whether true or “merely” perceived) of being abandoned in favor of future large screen (TV, printer interface, and other desktop sized webOS devices). What astonishes me is that some very good apps have been released in the last 2 to 3 months despite the significant problems, and that is really quite a testimony to what might yet happen: maybe webOS for phones can rise out of the ashes.

I so like the picture !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.crazzilla.com Randholio

From an outsiders perspective, being that I only develop websites and haven’t fiddled in the app cell phone world, I see a few problems that appear very clear.

First offm everyone needs to quit cloning the hell out of each other. If I see one more jewel gem square balloon bubble pop game….. I mean really? Or how many fart apps do we really need? I don’t know developers by name so I’m not calling individuals out, but some of these developers are absolutely asking with failure. If you can’t be somewhat intuitive, for the love of God…..take a hike! I’m sick of shuffling through pages of pure repetitive crap to find something decent….

The second problem I see is something I can’t understand at all. I’ve tried on several occasions to buy apps I like. I can’t purchase apps because I’m not dumb enough to give my money to the blood sucking leech credit card companies??

I try and buy apps with a prepaid card and can’t because they don’t have addresses attached to them. Do you know how many kids purchase stuff with a pre paid card? That I’m sure takes a nice hunk out of profits that could be earned. There is no reoccuring payment for most apps, so I see no need for a requirement of an actual full fledged credit card. Thing of how many kids got visa gift card this christmas alone. Retarded

Wow really?? Where did my comment go?

  • Cecil Jolley

SERIOUSLY?!?!? What is with all the BAD information? Palm waived the developer fee months ago, something even Apple hasn’t done. And speaking from experience, there is no fee to submit apps either! I had a glitch two weeks ago where the dev portal did prompt me to pay in order to submit an app, however, the dev relations team had it fixed for me in under an hour! And what other mobile company gives free developer devices??? I paid a hundred dollars to even just download the apple sdk, submitted several apps to their catalog, and no respect from Apple, only short auto generated email responses when a problem comes up… Palm, you’ve definitely done right by me, thanks you!

    • Joseph

Cecil, which other company has to? And trust me, HP Palm really has to. And some of us don’t think that futzing for an hour in order to submit an app is good karma. Glad you’re happy, but some of us have legitimate perspectives that don’t perfectly match yours, so SERIOUSLY?!?!?!? thanks for your opinion and so on, but we are not trying to deliver BAD info, merely articulate our repeated experiences, and be heard for our concerns.

      • Cecil Jolley

Understood, however, the baseline of my post was this, THERE ARE NO DEVELOPER FEES WITH PALM!
