Tablet Rumors: The Gift That Keeps On Giving

By: , 1/19/2011 12:24 pm | 10 comments

Keeping up with all the webOS tablet rumors is becoming a full-time job for us… but here’s some more.  In case you’ve been hiding under a rock, check out our stories on the leaked Topaz and Opal tablets to bring you up to speed.

Here’s the latest, posted by Engadget.

First up, we have some possible specs on both the Opal and Topaz. The Opal will supposedly measure 180 x 144 x 13mm which makes it a tad shorter and wider than the now famous Galaxy Tab. (You won’t hear us complain about that… some of us love the size of the Galaxy Tab!) The Topaz supposedly measures in at 241 x 190 x 13mm, which puts it in iPad territory.  The Opal could feature a 1,024 x 768 pixel TFT LCD display – not too shabby, if you ask us. The rocking sound system that is rumored to be on board these things could be powered by HP’s “Beats” audio processing. It is also rumored that the tablets will be provided a fair amount of cloud storage. That is no surprise considering all of HP’s recent acquisitions.

The next set of rumors comes in the form of a consumer survey conducted by GfK Custom Research North America. HP has been known to use this company before to gain insight into consumer interest. This survey makes no direct mention of HP or Palm but it does use several key phrases that the average webOS user would be familiar with. Terms like Synergy, Touchstone, and a description that sounded an awful lot like Exhibition are all present in this survey. Something new we have yet to hear mentioned is the addition of “Tap to Share” which appears to be a way to tap devices together to transfer information.

So there it is, folks! The latest and greatest rumors to come in from Engadget in regards to the future webOS tablets. For all of you who were afraid that webOS was going to die you can now stop worrying. Nothing gets this much attention for no reason at all! Something big is obviously just around the corner.

I also saw that whoever was leaking this information said that the handsets that were going to be released were “nothing too amazing”…hmmm, that is dissapointing if true.

    • Joseph

      tautology… but true nonetheless

  • Jav Sater

Too late for me. I received an Ipad for xmas so I’m set in the tablet fiwld, but hopefuly HP has a better handset soon because grandpa pre may not make it another year.

You mean you received a giant iTouch?

  • Beni

I’m excited about what HP has for WebOs but at the rate the other tech companies are moving, they have to release something very soon otherwise WebOs will be left behind again… The Palmpads sound really cool I cannot wait although the UI looks sweet on the playbook even though it’s a ripoff of WebOs. The new phones have to be months ahead of the competition to give them time to stay ahead.

Why do I have this aching feeling that what they have comming out will only be on par with everything else instead of blowing them out of the water. I still have heard nothing about dual processors which concerns me seems how the xoom has dual processors and everything I have herd about the ipad 2 seems to allude to it having dual processors. Seems like something you might want when your operating system stresses on true multi-tasking.

I would like skype & sling working on these devices before I make any purchases.
We need to know the companies are developing webos versions along the iPhone version etc……

    • Joseph

precisely… but are they? and if so, why are they? why would they when everything is so wonderfully unclear?

  • Ortwin

The hardware of those upcoming devices has to be good but it doesn’t have to be too amazing. WebOS takes care of that. Specs are nice and all but they are pretty useless unless the software actually uses them. Some of the stuff in our original Pres is still underused because of missing APIs or not used at all. Does any mobile OS actually use dual core CPUs well?

Agree with above post that whilst hardwear can initially wow, all hardwear gets overtaken eventually. What keeps people interested is the software ie the OS, apps & hopefully Cloud ecosystem that HP will introduce. Think people will buy into a system which from laptop to tablet on couch to phone out of house, all ‘shared’
