Topaz Specs and the Touchstone v2 Leaked!

By: , 1/24/2011 2:46 pm | 15 comments

What is this? More specs on the Topaz? Awesome.

Today PreCentral broke a virtual breadbasket (did I just confuse a metaphor?) about the Topaz. Now reportedly these documents were written last fall so it is possible that the info is a little out of date, but it looks like most of the goodies line up with what we have heard previously.

So here is what we have learned:

  • Topaz will be 9.7 inches and run at 1024 x 768 screen underneath a layer of Gorilla Glass.
  • Dual core 1.2 Ghz Qualcomm proc (MSM8660 to be exact)
  • 512 MB RAM (missed that one…figured we would get at least a GB)
  • 16/32/64 GB storage options…I would not be surprised if they drop the 16GB option for retail
  • Front facing camera for video chatting.
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • Accelerometer, eCompass, Gyro, Light Sensor, and Mic
  • 2 speakers with Beats Audio…this is different than what we heard before. Other leaks mentioned a 3 speaker configuration.
  • Battery: 2 3,125 mAH cells….supposedly 8 hours of juice.

All in all, that looks like a pretty sweet device. It kills the current iPad, but I would guess it is just a bit under the specs of the upcoming iPad 2. They should bump it to 1 GB RAM at the very least. I also wish it had more pixels on the screen, but that isn’t a huge deal I suppose.

Touchstone v2!

The coolest part of the leak, to me anyway, is some new info on the next version of the Touchstone. Obviously the little hockey puck ain’t gonna charge those monster batteries so HP is planning to expand the role of the TS (according to PreCentral).

  • Wireless charging similar to what we have now
  • Wireless picture sharing
  • Wireless website sharing
  • Wireless audio streaming via Bluetooth to speaker dock
  • Wireless map and directions
  • Wireless music sharing from Palm smartphone (eg Broadway) to Topaz
  • Wireless contact sharing
  • Wireless printing
  • Wireless video streaming from Touchstone video dock to VGA or HDMI out
  • Wireless video game playing via Touchstone video dock

That is a much longer list than simply charging the device eh? Looks almost like a little docking station. I wonder if you will only be able to print while it is connected. Surely not…

Wireless video streaming, awesome.

Wireless video game playing? Say wha?? Now rumors have been flying around that HP is coming out with a set top box (think Apple TV). That couldn’t be a game console could it? Long shot….but sounds cool eh?

Pretty Clouds

The leaked documents also gave a pretty clear pic that HP is making a big play in the cloud. Not a big surprise, but it is apparent that their goal is to make webOS work between devices. Start a movie on one, pick it up on another…very cool stuff. Will be interested to see more info on this stuff.

So there you have it…a virtual treasure trove of goodies. Any guesses as to how much it is gonna cost?

One last note…congrats go out to PreCentral for this big fat scoop. Not often that a niche site out scoops the big boys like Engadget and the like. And to the person who sent the goodies in…Mr. Fudge, don’t be a stranger eh?

I’m still holding out hope for a reflective screen tech of some kind, a la Pixel QI. Without it, I’m not sure a tablet makes much practical sense for me.

From what I have heard the Pixel QI screen is both really expensive and not readily available…can’t imagine that is happening.

You are just too practical Mark. Tablets are never NEED devices. They are nice to haves.

I just hope it plays Netflix – :)

I like what I have read. The functions seem great. But please have some big company names lines with their apps working on webos. I’m based in Ireland so I would like to hear that skynews for webos or sling working on webos. Skype working (without video) for webos.
I believe that having these apps working will help webos. T

Extremely exciting stuff from the people over at HP and Palm, but a device is only as good as the software that is developed for it. I’m hoping that the heavy Amazon integration is there but I’m not that much of an ebook person. The Amazon music store is a start, but we need apps like Netflix and some sort of Navigation application that comes directly from HP and Palm. Games of course and a productivity suite which is hopefully going to do well. We shall see come February 9th, cant wait!

Logmein! And a better ebook store/reader option are my wants.

Anything that gets people talking about webOS is awesome in my book and if this thing is as cool as I think its gonna be a good competitor with the other tablets. If I had to guess the top tablets are gonna be the ipad 2 (of corce), the Xoom, the Playbook unfortunatly, and as long as it comes out soon the topaz (aka PalmPad, TouchPad). And really the only reason I think that is HP’s size, scope, and over all integration with all there products.

Am I the only one that’s tired about heaing about tablets. Don’t need one and don’t want one! Were are the leaks about the phones. Growing real tired about hearing about stuff I don’t want or need

    • http://www.webosroundup.com/ David

The reason the leaks are tablets is because the phones aren’t being prepared from a marketing perspective. 2/9 is all about tablets so the leaks are coming from those preparations…phones are coming.

        Droid it is!

Article on newstand magazine today about 38 android tablets available. So the question is what makes a webOS tablet special, other than being a rarer breed? What functions will the webOS tablet have that are unique to it? Because I personally dont see anything in this line up that really makes me super horny, even tho the wireless vid might be kinda nice. I really hope we can all be objective about the long view here, I mean since we’ve been forced to wait so long we now want a lot.

You answered your question with your 1st sentence. There are 38 android tablets available. THAT’s webos’ appeal. And if that stuff in the post didn’t make you think they don’t have something worthwhile to offer over the slew of android toys then it’s probably just not something you’re going to be interested even if it came with immortal life.

Your post in general is hard to agree with.

I prefer a non Android, WebOS device because I fear that with multiple Android devices out there made by multiple companies that there are multiple versions of Android OS versions. eg. “Angry Birds working on one phone and not another but both phones running the same OS version.” With HP/Palm taking over the development of the devices and its operating system, WebOS and it’s devices I feel are more stable and usable than Android. Plus it has “true” multi-tasking which other don’t have yet. Have fun with that Droid. I hope a new game or app doesn’t crash your phone.
