webOSroundup interviews HP’s Phil McKinney at CES!

By: , 1/10/2011 10:04 am | 44 comments

One of the highlights at CES was definitely this interview. In fact, it was the highlight.

Here is how it happened. We were at the Microsoft booth looking at some goodies for Windows Phone 7 for our sister site. I was literally recording a video when I see Roy from out of the corner of my eye. At first I am like “what the heck dude…recording a video!!”, then he points and I see who is standing with him.

To call me shocked would be an understatement…the day before we couldn’t get in to talk to anyone at HP/Palm and here standing right before me was the man in charge of everything.

In all we talked for about 20 – 30 minutes. Some of it was off the record, some of it was simply geeking out with one of the chief geeks. He agreed to do a short interview on camera and Roy did a great job asking him questions.

As a final note…we don’t ask him anything about February 9th. He mentioned before we started that he wouldn’t answer any questions on the subject and he didn’t want to be hounded (like he had been a million times before). So, out of respect for that request, we didn’t push.

So without futher ado…here is the video of the amazing and extremely likable HP’s CTO Phil McKinney.

Update: For those of you on a mobile device, here is the YouTube link

flattr this!

Why can I not view the video? All I get is a white screen with a small cube in the center with a question mark? I’m using a Pre Plus.

We were using an external mic. Considering how crazy loud it was in there, the sound turned out a lot better than I expected. :)

Would you be so kind as to upload this to youtube so Palm users can view the video? Thanks!

I would appreciate a summary of the interview. Some people read but do not speak English very well and it would be very helpful.

Either they really have something big to announce, or they are extremely naive at HP (I’m afraid it’s the latter :’( ). I’m pretty shocked by the way Phil seems unimpressed by the huge competition HP is going to face with the Playbook and Android 3 devices announced at CES… It’s obvious both the new RIM OS and Android 3 take the best from webOS and take it to another level. Leaving webOS 2 far behind and me only hoping for indeed the rumored webOS 2.5/3.0.

    • http://www.webosroundup.com/ Roy Sutton

There are a few things that go along with Phil’s lack of surprise at any of these products: First, Phil works with a huge R&D division that is pushing these same boundaries with products that won’t see the light of day for years. Second, Phil should have a pretty good idea what the competition is bringing to market and to CES. There /shouldn’t/ be any surprise about much of this.

Now, a separate, valid question is does HP/Palm have the big wow factor up its sleeve for Feb. 9? We’ll have to see!

      • http://www.hpalmnews.com HPalm News

Yeah I agree. And there also wasn’t that much presented that is new at CES. We all knew about the Playbook, we all knew Honeycomb was going to be an improvement and we knew that the Motorola Tablet would be Google’s answer to the iPad. As for the stuff about docks and Motorola laptops, should that really scare or impress HP and Phil? Not really. Making a keyboard and screen that can input on a phone and display the results would probably take them about a week to move to production.

Smartphones??? okay we know tablets are coming

  • JDM

Yes, WRU (or however it should be shortened) please link to a youtube video. As the bulk of your readers are *cough* WebOS users, please put it in a form WebOS users can watch while away from a computer

    Thanks! :)

    • Nic Ortiz

If you didn’t notice, a YouTube link is now up. And the ‘correct’ shortened version if it matters at all is WOR =P

  • pcworld

Where’s the video? Can’t see it… And I’m using Firefox on Windows with Flash…

  • Hoanngo

will you post the off the record stuff after feb 9th?

    • http://www.webosroundup.com/ David

No, the off-the-record stuff was not 2/9 related. It was just him being a cool guy and chatting with us.

      • Bjs

That’s cool. I wanna buy Phil a beer. Though he can probably buy a brewery…

  • Mannyman

What’s cool is that he asked and answered our tweets on BadKitty no less.

Yeah, with all due respect and many thanks, could you please start putting these videos and such on youtube? I’m actually kind of curious as to what your traffic base consists of now that I am thinking about it. Does this site get more traffic by pc or mobile device?

    • http://www.crazzilla.com Randholio

Still curious about the traffic lol, but thank you VERY much for the youtube link!

    • http://www.webosroundup.com/ David

A large percentage of our traffic comes from mobile devices. We always post our vids on YouTube (www.youtube.com/webosroundup), but we sometimes forget to link them.

      • http://www.crazzilla.com Randholio

Cool, well thanks again. You guys are doing a fantastic job.

  • http://Bungie.net “In The Coming Months”

I think it’s interesting how when I double tap the flash content it automatically zooms in on the video and blacks out everything around it. I’m also unable to move away from the video unless I use the back gesture. It’s like palm already had the basics for flash installed on the Pixi, it just never happened though. Also good interview, lol.

  • Kate

Thank you for the YouTube video! YES! A removeable keyboard is a great idea! (re: his mention of the #1 device resurrection request.)

  • http://www.crazzilla.com Randholio

I’m sure we would have all loved for the guy to reveal more details. There was a bit that sounded positive, and he seemed pretty confident in his silence for sure lol. I was a bit disappointed in his lack of an immediate enthusiasm in docking. Hopefully he is playing the ninja role and secretely knows this idea is worthy of addressing right now and not later. Evidently “somebody” made it cost efficient to implement now…….

    • http://www.hpalmnews.com HPalm News

Why do you assume that it is “worth addressing”. He gave very good reasoning why it is not the best way to go. Think about the better solutions – HDMI out, with Bluetooth connectivity for a mouse and keyboard. DONE. No extra insanely priced docks like Motorola is offering. The beauty of what they offered is in what it does once it is docked. He was just saying that it doesn’t make any sense to charge someone for TWO more devices, when they should all just work together. I imagine we’ll see packaged laptops with the tablets and phones that have Bluetooth software that links the two and sends all webOS info between them so that it is possible to use both seamlessly. I’m sure eventually the device itself will over enough computing power, but for now I don’t see many people buying that Motorola laptop. Maybe the screen doc, but that can be accomplished with bluetooth and there is no need to sell an accessory. That is all he was saying.

DAVID, I WOULD LIKE TO PUBLICLY THANK YOU AND YOUR CREW FOR AN OUTSTANDING JOB WELL DONE. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT PHIL IS LOOKING AROUND BUT NOT TO INTERESTED IN WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING AND ALSO SEEMS TO KIND OF SMIRK ABOUT WHAT OTHERS HAVE ALMOST IF HE IS TRYING TO TELL THE WORLD WE H/P ARE AND ALWAYS WILL BE #1 BECAUSE WE HAVE THE BRAINS AND BRAUN. IT HAS MOST DEFFINITELY BEEN A SLOW START WITH WEBOS SINCE ACQUIRING PALM BUT THE IDEA OF H/P HAVING TO PLAY CATCH UP CERTAINLY DID NOT LOOK LIKE THERE WAS AN OUNCE OF WORRY OR CONCERN ON PHIL’S FACE. I WOULD BE WILLING TO SAY THAT H/P IS ALREADY AHEAD OF THERE COMPETITION AND THEY WILL SHOW THE WORLD IN JUST A COUPLE OF SHORT MONTHS THAT 2011 IS THE YEAR OF WEBOS AND OTHERS SHOULD GO HIDE RIGHT BACK IN THE CLOSET THEY CAME OUT OF…GOD BLESS & BEST REGARDS,

    • BadBoyBri

I agree with Jeffery’scomments, but I’m NOT so Optomistic!! This is a VERY Competitive market!! You should ALWAYS be alittle concerned and ALWAYS be on your toes!! You can THINK positive All you want, but I want to See, Touch, Taste, Smell, and Enjoy something from HP/Palm NOW!! “Life Moves Fast. Don’t Keep Your Customers Waiting.”

  • [email protected]

GREAT GREAT JOB W.O.R….KEEP UP THE AMAZING JOB THAT YOUR DOING AND ALL OF US WEBOS ENTHUSIASTS APPRECIATE ALL OF YOU AND YOU COMMITMENT TO WEBOS….GOD BLESS AND BEST REGARDS,

LIKE MANY PEOPLE I FIND IT A REAL DISTRACTION TO READ ITEMS THAT ARE ALL IN CAPS. Ooops, something got stuck in my throat for just a microbrew second.

      • Rlopin

I scolled right past the all caps. It gives me a headache.

  • George

Wow, guy drop the caps. It only makes you look like an idiot. No offence but it really does. Why do you type in all caps anyway?

    Thanks wR for posting this!

  • Einstein5

A webOS lightbulb? That sounds amazing! Thanks to WOR foe posting this article/video!

  • BadBoyBri

I find it Very Interesting that Phil could find the time to just Chill at the CES!! Did you see Steve Jobs there Chillin?! Phil should have been in his office or down in the assembly plant, making New webOS 2.0 smartphones. The compition was at CES and they were not CHILLIN!! You guys at WOR are Very Optimistic, but HP/Palm hasn’t shown us ANYTHING!! Just Talk!! They only have 1% of the market!! There Is No Time To Chill!! Phil should have been videoing and taking notes, or passing out his resume!! “Life Moves Fast. Don’t Keep Your Customers Waiting.”

    • http://allandelacruz.com Xacto01

Don’t take the word chill out of context though. The whole reason Phil is at CES, is to see the competition.
