HP Veer Pops up in FCC Filings

By: , 2/11/2011 10:13 pm | 24 comments

Thanks to an awesome tip from Arthur Thornton we just discovered that the HP Veer has cleared the FCC. A quick search of the FCC filings from 02/1/11-02/28/2011 will give some mighty interesting results. The first thing that raises our attention is the SAR report mentioning 920mAh battery which is approximately the same size as the Veer’s battery. A little more digging gets us the FCC ID: O8F-BROU. Would that be the Broadway that we reported on months ago with the Pixi size screen resolution? Do we also detect an operation of “Held to head (open and closed-by sliding)”? That definitely sounds like the Veer. Last but certainly not least is the never before seen Product Number: P160UNA. As we all know by now the UNA indicates that this is a GSM device.

So there you have it folks! We hope this means the Veer is coming to a carrier near you soon. In the mean time we will keep digging to see what else we can find. Hopefully we can find some Pre 3/TouchPad goodness!

[Thanks for the tip and help Arthur!]

flattr this!

    You’re welcome Ryan!

Sounds good, hopefully this phone is no more then $100 with contract otherwise it’s another blunder by Palm.

The Pre 2 will be 100 on contract, so the Veer must be cheaper.

    • LOLer

I’m more interested on the unlocked/developer/world version of the phone. The Pre 2 is $350, so I’d expect it to be $300 or less, although with the rumors of the “iPhone Nano” running for $200 unlocked, HP should consider it’s pricing scheme.

      • http://www.arthurthornton.net/ Arthur Thornton

        actually, the Pre2 is $450

  • protofa

    what?

  • http://twitter.com/confusedgeek Felipe Garcia

they did say early spring. doesnt spring start late march? thats just next month. i say its here by april on att. yeah it shouldnt cost more than $100 with contract.

hey look the palm name still lives. does this mean this is still a palm made phone? if this changes to hp in future devices, i guess we know when hp finally has complete control.

An astute observation, Felipe. In fact both webOS devices announced today were manufactured by Palm and pretty much physically completed when the acquisition took place. We imagine an HP-manufactured model can’t be too far behind… but again, that’s just imagining. ;)

I really don’t care I got suckered into this by investigating and wanting the 2.0 instead Jon pulled a Shylock on us. I apologize if it sounds abrasive and rude but even my Jewish relatives would agree that Jon is stereotypical like a caricature.

    • http://www.arthurthornton.net/ Arthur Thornton

yeah, yeah, yeah, we keep hearing you and you keep spouting off nonsense. What makes you think it was Jon who said no. Some people on O2 (carrier outside the USA) say the palm.com/webos-info page says they WILL get webOS 2.0. Regardless, I doubt it was Ruby’s decision. Probably HP’s or the carriers (I say carriers because someone on O2 said they saw it say Palm was working with their carrier to deliver the update)

      • Joseph Ziehm

He was the one who said no and really dropped the ball. Carriers may or may not have 2.0 but this was at his discretion whether or not to tell consumers. Had it been that HP told us that WebOS 2.0 was not coming instead of prolonging the life cycle of a lie I would not have gone that route. I have a Pixi+ Aruther and you’ve seen me post it. Now either have some respect or stop talking down to me like a bush leauge second rate sales associate!

Guys. Take your flame wars elsewhere. I’m not in the mood to read it tonight and further posts like this will be deleted. It’s just a phone. Settle down.

          • http://www.arthurthornton.net/ Arthur Thornton

Sorry Dan, didn’t realize my post sounded flaming.

          • Drehood

That’s because it wasn’t even close to being a flame.

        • RussK

I am an owner of the original Pixi, and I have no desire to see my phone upgraded to webOS 2.0. I don’t need anything to bog the phone down further. Moving on grom the legacy devices is a good move by HP and a look to the future.

          • Joseph Ziehm

While that’s all well in good Russ I had talked people into going with Palm. Right, now it does not even feel good to think about. As a former sales associate that is pretty hard to swallow. I would not mind a slow down with my overclocking in place. Right now it feels like HP did not want to correct the problem. While I like the looks of the Veer a free Pre2 would satisfy me.

Anyone know a way to hack the Pixi+ to handle Ubuntu MID? Much as I love WebOS 2.0 I miss my old 9.04 setup and would love to see if another distro could run.

    • http://www.arthurthornton.net/ Arthur Thornton

      You cannot.

Ubuntu MID is designed for x86 (computer processors), while the Pixi uses an ARMv6 processor (mobile, but older version of ARM). The Pre line (Pre, Pre+, Pre2) use ARMv7 processors. I believe the Pre3, Veer, and TouchPad also use the ARMv7.

As a result, it would take weeks of dedicated development time to get it working. Firstly, a custom kernel would be required. Secondly, it would require that somebody convert much of the x86 code to work on ARM. Finally, it would require compilation and installation, and for you to hope it functioned properly. It is unlikely to work out without a dedicated developer. Even then, to get it on the Pixi/Pixi+ would take substantially longer, because it has 64MB less RAM than the Sprint Pre has (Pixi has 256MB, but 64MB of it is dedicated to the modem, Sprint Pre has 256MB RAM, but the modem has its own memory, not using/wasting that of the system RAM). Add in that it is an older architecture and requires more optimizations, and you’re easily looking at a lengthy time of development to get it working on the Pixi.

      • Aaron Throckmorton

Joseph probably thought you were talking down to him again and is holding his breath! THUD! Maybe he’ll thank you for the info when he wakes up.

        • Joseph Ziehm

No I know when people talk down, thanks for the info Arthur. I apologize for the time zone difference Aaron but it’s around 6 AM here. Used to sleeping in until around 8 or 9. Going to be waking up even earlier… As a… Groan frickin noob intern soon.

  • Mr.Hard

Great! I totally liked the veer when they announced it! Can’t wait to get one for my gf!

    • Joseph Ziehm

My gf decided happily on an iPhone before this debacle I’m glad that I did not have her wait. Wish we could shoehorn that little Ubuntu MID to replace the dissapointment.
