HP Veer: The smallest smartphone manufactured to date

HP is betting strongly that in a sea of slab smartphones, there is still widespread appeal for a pocketable smartphone. They made a strong case for that with the Veer. Sporting a glass 2.6” screen, the Veer is the smallest full-featured smartphone ever manufactured. Don’t let its diminutive looks fool you, though: this thing can move. From what we gather, this smartphone is many cuts above the webOS hardware it’s leaving behind: soft touch plastic materials abound, and it feels really solid in the hand. Unlike the now defunct (and “refunct”) Microsoft Kin One, we expect this phone do very well. You can quote us on that.

Veer Specs:

  • Portrait slider
  • HSDPA 7.2/HSUPA 5.76
    Quad-band GSM/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (obviously not coming to Sprint or Verizon)
  • Display: 2.6-inch multitouch screen with a vibrant 18-bit color, 320×400 resolution
  • Camera: 5-megapixel camera with extended depth of field, geotagging, and video capture
  • Audio: Speakerphone; dual-mic for noise cancellation for quieter calls
  • Sensors: Accelerometer, ambient light, and proximity
  • Supported media formats: Audio formats: MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, AMR, QCELP, WAV
    Video formats: MPEG-4, H.263, H.264
  • Wireless connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n with WPA, WPA2, WEP, 802.1X authentication; Bluetooth® wireless technology 2.1 + EDR with A2DP stereo Bluetooth support; Wi-Fi router functionality for up to five devices using HP mobile hotspot.
  • Storage: 8GB (~6.5GB available)
    USB mass storage support
  • Battery: 910 mAh (non-removable); up to 5.0 hours of talk time or 300 hours of standby time.
  • Connector: Charger/magnetic connector with USB 2.0 Hi-Speed

Hmm, I don’t agree Tony. I don’t want a bigger phone. I don’t want to try to shove a brick in my pocket.

And Nokia sells millions of basic function low speed phones every day. Horses for courses just because you want a brick others want small and dainty, my seventy one year old mother for one.

Everyone I know wants BIGGER only children can get anything done on a screen this small.

Big is why people have flocked to the Andriod phones I’m droves don’t you people get that ?

Andriod as an OS is middle of the road at best it’s the large sexy screens and high power hardware that have driven Android PERIOD……

Let’s just hope they don’t screw it up with pricing. This thing could be amazing for under $100 on contract, and would do some serious damage if marketed at the younger crowd.

Ok will webos create more apps and catch up with android? That’s a big key too.

More doesn’t mean better. With thousands of apps I look at the catalog and see “don’t need it” or “not gonna pay for it”. So I don’t see how the situation would be any better with 1,000x as many apps. What matters is the business partnerships: where’s the Netflix player?

Small phone for those who’ll buy touchPad. The latter for surfing n veer for phone functioning. How cool will that be!

I’ve bashed in every post today, but this is a great idea and looks like a great phone. Still, gsm means AT&T, and they already have a great phone with great battery life. It’s an iphone. Today was a great day for webos users who have no idea what they are missing. For the original loyalists on sprint, it feels like a punch in the gut.
