VIDEO: webOSroundup Interviews TECHNOBUFFALO!

By: , 2/10/2011 8:10 am | 25 comments

That’s right kids, we were hungry for more reactions after hearing the insightful thoughts from the good folks at Engadget…  so we tackled Noah Kravitz (formally from Phonedog) and Jon Rettinger of TechnoBuffalo and forced them to give us their account of how the day went. … Actually they were incredibly cool with us and set aside their blogging to chat with us. Some great points were raised here… be sure to read Noah’s detailed article of Noah’s thoughts on the “Think Beyond” event. Thanks, guys!

Well, here’s my take after reading the stuff written by the pros and the fans. HP is trying to defibulate (sp?) a dying mobile OS. I think they needed time to regroup after acquiring Palm and to present an actual working concept. So many people complain of manufacturers showing off concepts. Yes, as a Pixi owner I feel a little left in the dust. But HP is trying to relaunch, and they wager it’s more critical to gain new customers. However, enough time has passed since the last webOS device that they hope you’ll upgrade phones rather than throw webOS 2.0 on an old Pre or Pixi. I know we don’t all want that, but enough do that they’re not losing their whole fanbase. Besides, if you’re not going to buy a new phone then HP won’t get any money from you anwyay. Updates are free, but your hardware still can’t do all the cool stuff the new phones can. Plus, your profile will migrate to the new phones–we’re not totally left behind. My wife has an iPhone and we own an AppleTV. But I’m way more sold on a webOS tablet than the iPad. It does more than the current iPad does (webcam, hello!), comes with QuickOffice (iPad doesn’t), and it plays on demand movies, games, and music. The Touchtone dock and wireless keyboard make it much more a laptop replacement than iPad’s similar accessories (which rely on that stupid iPod dock interface). Apple home sharing is pretty useful, but that device tapping thing seems far more intuitive and practical to me. Just my thoughts.

The Treo’s always started out with third rate carrier Sprint. New products, even the Pre still suffered exclusivity period with a third place carrier. Finally with the Pre3 they will open up on Verizon — a couple days after the Verizon iPhone. How can such a rich and storied company as HP be so bonehead stupid? WebOs is just another betamax.

      • JDM

Are you saying that HP is stupid for offering the phone to Verizon and they take it with open arms? I can only imagine that seeing the Pre 3 next to an iphone on the display could only help…. “hmm, do I as a customer want to pay more for an Iphone, or lets see… This other phone (PRE3?) works very well and is very intuitive… Hmmmm… Decisions…” Verizon has the best polled coverage and most people love em’. Why not have a cozy spot next to the best marketed device out there? Besides, isn’t it Sprint’s choice to take the phone?

I switched from Verizon to Sprint about three years ago, and I have never given a thought to moving to the VZW.

Sprint is actually rated the highest in customer satisfaction right now. There was an article about it on WebOSRoundUp:

Maybe Sprint is giving the no thanks to HPalm to run Android? The 4G phones are doing well, and if you look at any site that compares smartphones the Evo, Epic, iPhone, and Droid are all up in the top five in some order. Android is HOT right now. WebOS isn’t. I cannot stress how much I loved the Pre when I switched from Blackberry. “The Rubester” said it right when he mentioned that Palm missed a product cycle (if you ask me so did Blackberry). iOS and Android did not, and are in demand.

I like the specs on the Pre 3 but other than the processor what about it is to love for those who have the option of and Evo, Epic, Droid, or iPhone? Verizon and AT&T will pick this phone up. From what I hear Sprint isn’t getting it? There are supposed to be 5-6 smartphones out this year from HPalm so maybe there will be another device out there from them going to Sprint?

          • JDM

I hope so… Sprint is a great carrier to me.

Again, we don’t know who will carry the Pre 3. Sprint has not made an announcement, but neither have any of the other carriers. Please don’t treat speculation as fact. I’m sure that closer to summer all 4 major carriers will announce product lineups, and then people can make their decision then. Until that point, HP needs to market this baby strong to help build buzz.

I don’t recall an announcement being made regarding the Pre 3 being available on Verizon at launch. In fact, I don’t recall ANY carrier announcements being made at all, save for the Pre 2 being available Feb. 10 for preorder on Verizon. The fact is, we don’t know what carrier(s) will have the Veer and Pre 3 right now, and anything that’s said about that at this moment is pure speculation.

I am dumping my webos phone, no more will I pander to Palm/HP and promises of Flash, Webos 2.0, new sprint hardware, or any of the other broken promises made to date….

      • JDM

Make sure you use a great big HAMMER and SMASH IT TO BITS!!! Hulk Smash! You’ll feel better :)

  • TonyMac

I’m not down on the company for abandoning old hardware. I got mine 2 years ago, it’s seen enough action and needs replaced. The issue I’m having is with all the hype, a new phone should have hit shelves *yesterday*. There’s nothing truly new from that conference, just a new spec pre, a slider pixi and a WebOS ipad ++. I will own the tablet. I hope my phone holds out for its replacement’s availability.

  • Shizz

I woulden blam sprint 4not wasteing there time with the phone all there new phones are coming out with 4g I wuz lookin forword 2have a webos with 4g speeds front faceing camera pre3 is really a waste of time n money only way I would buy it on sprint is bcuz my pre- is on it last leg

    • JDM

And that MAY be precisely why Sprint won’t take these phones.

I don’t think HP ever really wanted to get into the phone business. Didn’t they say that when they first bought Palm and then they backed away from that statement. I believe they only wanted the OS for the touchpad and possibly laptops and pcs in the future.

Go to your local carrier, tell them how HP gave it to the loyal customers and how you feel.. Since the new sales is what HP is after anyways….

  • BadBoyBri

All this is interesting, and yet, disappointing. I think the Veer is a waist of time and money. Why did HP just abandoned the Pixi. It already has it’s nich in the market, and people are already happy with it. Now you want them to change their minds for something that is LESS?! The Pre 3 is cool, but it should have been COOLER!! Where’s the 4G? Where’s the microSD card slot? And what happened to “ready to be delivered in weeks”? “This summer” could easily turn into August! The Touchpad seems cool, but I’m more concerned about the Pre 3. All this hype is still late in technology, and slow in delivery! I’m not surprised that webOS 2.x won’t work OTA, but also Very Disappointed! HP/Palm has string us along, making us think that they would take care of us, and then tur around and Screw Us!! webOS would be NOTHING without us, without us original Sprint Pre (minus) owners. And we’re getting Screwed the Most! I’m Not Happy!!

    Awesome, first Engadget now TechnoBuffalo!

  • Tony

I’m getting the echo or evo in the next few weeks and never getting webos phone. I’m tired of all the BS!. I do love sprints service though. HP just screwed all the existing customers with the older modes. HP ur no better than Palm.

That was great, seeing 2 of my go to tech sites interacting like that, very cool. Would really love to see more of that type of thing. Like a round table type discussion with all the big tech sites.
