Big Price for the Tiny HP Veer? [Update: All the New Hardware Prices Revealed!]

By: , 3/9/2011 8:42 am | 53 comments

The world’s smallest smartphone is up for (pre)order in the UK. As you can see on KingOfGadgets the Veer can be (pre)ordered for the whopping price of £499.00! Just to put some perspective on this for you that would be about $810 for us here in the U.S. Let us hope that if/when this thing comes out here in the states that we get some kind of break from whatever carrier it is offered on. In the mean time check out this cool little teaser video of the Veer that is on the KingOfGadgets page.

Update: The pricing for the Pre 3 and TouchPad have also been released as Baali in our comments points out. The Pre 3 also shows a price tag of £499.00 while the TouchPad is an insane £699.00! That would put the TouchPad at the unbelievable price of $1133 here in the U.S. We imagine these prices are mere place holders, and hope when these suckers finally do launch, we’ll see much friendlier price points.

Unfortunately for us here in the UK the price is always higher for products than a direct comparison with US prices would suggest so I expect the US price will be quite a bit below that $810 you quote.

500 Pounds? That way too much. Would be approximately 590 €. The original Pre was 540 € when I remember it the right way. And the Veer is even smaller…
    2/3 would be OK.

I’m sure it’s a placeholder price. Now they got all three new WebOS devices on the page and also the Pre3 is priced with 499.-. TouchPad 699.- :) http://www.kingofgadgets.co.uk/mobile-phones-official-sim-free-hp/

I doubt this website is a trustworthy source. Not sure why this even made front page on WOR.

$810 may be what the equivelent is of that price but normally when I see prices in UK £, that same number ends up becoming the price in dollars, so $499 would be closer – it has to do with cost of living, etc. It varies of course depending on exchange rates, but $810 isn’t really an accurate comparison. This is also for an unlocked device, and carrier subsidies may take that $499 and push it down below $200. Here are the prices for the new hardware I’m HOPING to see:

    Veer: $149
    Pree3: $199
    Touchpad (Wifi 16GB): $349
    Touchpad (Wifi 32GB): $399
    Touchpad (3G 16GB): $449 ($199 with subsidy)
    Touchpad (3G 32GB): $499 ($249 with subsidy)

Of course I have no CLUE about these and my guess is it’s a bit of wishful thinking, but I can dream, can’t I???

For me these prices are the lowest feasible prices for those devices, but I guess it will be some $ 50 more for each one except of the phones (if this is with subsidy… without I expect the Veer to hit for around 349 and the Pre 3 for 499).

Which still would make it a very good deal for me.

Wait, what!? I don’t want to know the price of the Pre 3 then… Not mentioning it’s even more expensive than an iPhone.

HP needs to get back to reality if it wants to gain market share, it will never happen with those prices!

I’m in the UK and waiting for a Pre3 and Touch Pad, but at them prices I won’t be waiting around. I’ll be moving on to something else. I love webOS and try to encourage people to try it, but at them prices even I can’t justify that to people with such small app cat available. More sensible prices are no more than £300/£350 for Pre3 and £450/£500 for the TouchPad. Otherwise HP will struggle to break the Market.

  • BadBoyBri

Well, I guess it’s like EVERYTHING ELSE, from HP, a BIG Disappointment. But Don’t Complain, or you’ll be considered a “Whinner”!! ;-)

  • Chris

Disinformation makes sense. They want to keep Apple and Google guessing. And I think a surprisingly lower price after some good disinformation would create a market stir. There’s no way any of these devices sell for those prices.

    • BadBoyBri

You have So Much Faith in HP!! Do you work for them? Does a family member own a part of HP? How do you stay so Optimistic? Can you email me some of that HP Optimisum, cause I need it Real BAD!!

      • Shadavis08

It wouldn’t help you at all ever . Lighten up dude . Really , you must work for apple roflol

    • http://www.facebook.com/sweetgreggo Gregory Gammill

Apple and Google most likely aren’t really concerned about HPs pricing at this point.

      • BadBoyBri

Apple and Google are not concerned about HP AT ALL!!! When you own LESS than 10% of the market, and Dropping, you are just a “margin of error”, to Apple and Google (± 5%)!! And besides, HP’s only True Rival, is HP!! They can’t even do, what they say their going to do!

        • Anonymous

Well it was enough for Apple to put HPs logo onto their launch-day presentation for the iPad 2…. I think the TouchPad is in fact Apples biggest fear for the tablet market, and this not for the short-term but especially the long term (so in fact against iPad 3 and whatever comes from HP, as Apple is clearly in a worse position from the standpoint of the OS, they got “old” and can’t update easily without loosing compatibility to older software…).

          • Anaya2

That’s so far off, Apple has the advantage over HP Touchpad,
For one HP will have a hard time beating Apple price advantage, and Apple product tie in is strong to, HP can not compete in that, but what HP can compete is the enterprise sector and RIM, we need to compare the Touchpad with Playbook, because I bet you Steve Jobs will not loose sleep over the Touchpad

        • Shadavis08

Umm if you don’t know already HP is one of the two largest tech companies worldwide . So umm they could possibly fail but I doubt it . You see HP is not just making phones they are putting webOS on everything . And they sell alot of printers and a laptop every minuet of every day . So I believe IOS is very concerned at the least .

          • BadBoyBri

I don’t know HOW you can say that!! Apple has ALREADY sold Thousands of iPads, and will soon start selling the iPad 2. You’ll be able to go to Walmart, before June, and buy an iPad 2!! Show me ONE Fully Working TouchPad, in MY hands, Right Now!! There won’t be one til August! And I GUARANTEE you Won’t find one in ANY regular store!! So explain, in detail, how Apple is SUPPOSED to be concerned about ANYTHING HP claims to have!!

The identical £499 guarantees that this is a placeholder price for either the Veer or the Pre3. Further UK to US actual pricing rarely, if ever, directly compares. Much ado about nothing.

Eh! That’s pocket change for me… I want a couple of each please, wrap it up!

  • Matt C.

I don’t think the real prices will be far from these announced. Sad.

  • Jason

Not worth it!!! No one’s going to buy these devices, ESPECIALLY for those prices

  • John K.

Those prices are outragious!!! I didn’t pay that much for my laptop. If HP thinks anyone will buy and of these devices for those prices, they just bought palm to make sure it dies. Personally I would pay anymore for the Pre3 than I did for my sprint Pre, that’s still going after 20 months. If that’s the price I’ll be a fandroind, sorry HP/Palm

If those prices were to persist – these units will sell horribly. They need to be price pointed against apple iphone & ipad2. Non contract iphone4 is $600 CDN and apparently the ipad2 in canada will be $499. HP/Palm has its work cut out for themselves.

Wow and an ePad which is still as dates as the TouchPad is only a hundred bucks off of eBay. I do not see that marketing genius has paid off in keeping Palm “royalty” from the old days.

Just tell us the carriers and US pricing already. I don’t get why HP is dragging this out so much.

  • JDM

YES! That’s how fast people use gadgets! Now we have a phone that can keep up with us!

  • JoeZiehmer

Looking forward to my Android Tablet “in the coming weeks” which is a promise kept. Pity that Palm had to wait this long and cripple itself as HP has had to right every mistake. As much as I blamed Leo and a majority of the HP company layouts it reflects badly on Palm when the TouchPad is taken out of their hands. I would say shut down Palm completely and pull the designers to the HP enterprise and have the gaming engineers pluged in for consumer brands. HP needs to diversify the market with gaming/enterprise edition phones.

This was the only device that had a chance to be released weeks after it was announced. The evidence of their compentence is not very favorable. I really think this device had a better chance thanost gave credit, but weeks are now becoming months. Months to pre owners is nothing new, and nothing new is nothing to sell. Nothing to sell is, well, not a good corporate strategy.
