HP Summit 2011 Meeting Wrap-Up – Part I [Update: Video!]

By: , 3/14/2011 5:34 pm | 16 comments

For fans of webOS there was a lot to like about Léo Apotheker’s presentation at the HP Summit. There was a lot of focus on webOS and how HP will leverage it as part of their push into cloud computing. HP’s CEO said that through its scale and global reach they have the  “… potential to deliver more than 100 million webOS enabled devices a year.”

Léo also talked about how HP will be using its platform to provide a single interface to a user’s information. HP is clearly planning for webOS to be the glue that binds together its various offerings: PC’s, printers, cloud computing, enterprise software and more. What remains to be seen is if they can convince developers to target webOS as a cloud-based delivery platform for apps and content.

There were several appearances of the Pre 3 and the TouchPad in one of the promotional videos. We’ll see if we can get a copy of the video so you can take a look.

The summit is still going on, so if anymore webOS goodies come up, we will update this article.

Update: HP has a press release

Update 2: Key points

  • TouchPad is coming in June (better than August right?)
  • webOS to PC beta will be by the end of the year
  • webOS will “integrate with Windows” rather than dual-boot
  • HP is betting heavily on the cloud…heavily almost seems too small of a word.

Update 3: Leo is up on YouTube

The scale and pricing HP is bringing to WebOS is pretty exciting. I wish the products could come out sooner.

I think Leo just buried RIM.

In my mind, RIM has always been the soft target for HP. It’s where they could easily make the quickest inroads. If HP manages to take over RIM’s market, and make a better push into the consumer sphere, we could finally see webOS take off.

Is there noone at HP / Palm with public speaking skills?

  • Anonymous

So HP is going to use Vertica to data mine private phone owners for corporate customers and that data will be linked to your name?

I’m asking because that sounds pretty evil and I’m not sure that I got it right.

My earlier post was taken out of context. To clarify my point, hp has made few, if any errors that has kept it from achieving it’s current position in the market. Since that past behavior is likely ro continue, and hp has no suicidal tendencies, I’d venture to say that they are not going to release anything until it’s right. If that means pissing off phanbois and girls, well, then that’s just the way it’s going to have to be for a while. Palm is now hp,like it or not. HP smartly saw the correlation between webOS,exisitng web technologies, the global extension of the human nervous system the web is (thank you Marshall McLuhan) and how all of that mirrors hp’s global reach. My Pre is done for, but for me to get bitter about it in light of what will be down the road is shortsighted. Meanwhile, i’m getting my web coding skills up to snuff. I look forward to seeing your apps in the app store!
