TouchPad for $499 in June?

By: , 3/14/2011 11:15 am | 19 comments

Our friends over at PreCentral just got word that a “major retailer” is gearing up for the onslaught of tablets this year. Among the other tablets making their appearance were two HP TouchPad models.

The TouchPad 10″ models, according to the document, will be priced at $499 and $599, depending upon storage. That pricing puts it on par with the pricing of Apple’s iPad. We also find out that the 7″ model is expected some time in September, which meshes pretty well with the rumors that we’d been hearing.

There was no mention in the document about whether or not there would be 3G versions of the 10″ TouchPad. As the release date approaches I’m sure we’ll get more information.

Wow…if that’s true, both the release date and the price are much better than I had feared!

    june? yikes.

$499 for a tablet with no cellular network capabilities, very few apps compared to iOS and Android. It doesn’t sound appealing to people who don’t know WebOS. I will be buying one anyway.

Yes, I believe your right about people not really buying these right away, but get the devices out. An example here is look at when android first hit the market, if I remember correctly it took 2 years before it really started getting people.

Luckily with tethering getting access to the net shouldn’t be too much of an issue – and might save a few bucks. Here’s to hoping for a continuation of tethering w/ the pre3, and maybe a functional agps this time too

    September?

That is just 30 months from the annoucement date.

    Nice job, hp.

This will be a big hit with everyone who waited for the ipad3

    • JDM

30 months? Excuse the disbelief, but what are you talking about?

      • Raun

Oops. I meant 30 weeks, but ironically, it will about 30 months from the original pre announcement to release of it’s successor. How many iphones & android phones have been released since then?

How many Windows Tablets were released until Apple finally released their iPad?

    • Abe

What are you talking about? 30 months? They’ve never even officially announced the 7 inch tablet.

Is HP still going to make an announcement today? I can’t seem to find anything on tech sites.

Ok, buying the tablet is all well and good and I only want the wifi version, but, WHAT ABOUT THE PRE3!!! Just damn! Is it so hard to get the damn things out or are they giving up on the handset.

They need to BEAT apple’s pricing, not match it if they want to compete.
