Watch a Franken-Pre 2 Surgery Live!

By: , 3/22/2011 10:54 pm | 40 comments

A little over a week ago I converted our very own Cliff Thomas’s unlocked Pre 2 into a bona fide Sprint Pre 2. While doing this I decided to go live due to a little nudge from our good friend BeeRad (@techjunky79). So I quickly set up my new webcam, hit the broadcast button on my USTREAM channel, and sent out a tweet to let a couple of folks know what I was doing. Needless to say, it ended up being quite a blast despite the rushed broadcast.

Many of you pretty much demanded to see this happen again in a more organized manner so here it is. Our illustrious leader (he forces us to use that title lol) David Baxter is in dire need of some webOS 2.x action! His original Sprint Pre all but kicked the bucket several months back leaving him without a daily webOS device. So what better test subject than David? His Pre and Pre 2 will be going under the knife Weds. March 23 at exactly 9 pm EST.

There will be punch and pies…Ok no punch and pies, but it sounded good. Despite the lack of food and drink we are sure the live chat will be packed full of your favorite webOS users and a couple of our staff members. So pop some popcorn and crack a beer (or soda for our under age readers) because we are sure this will be a lot of fun! While you wait you can always cozy up to Rich Dunbar’s Step by Step Sprint Pre 2 Conversion Guide to familiarize yourself with the process that I will be performing. Do not worry if you can’t catch the live show as I will be recording it this time so everyone can watch it at a later date. However, you know it will be a lot more fun live! So be there or be square!

Watch Live!!!

flattr this!

Will I be able to watch this on my Sprint Pre- and do all the work at the same time :)? Seriously though, webosinternals and the entire homebrew community are great but how much $$$ is a Pre2? Take that apart and my Pre-, swap some parts around, all because HP can’t get things to market in a timely fashion? With webOs3 right around the corner in “coming months”, or years? CTIA with no mention of HPalm for Sprint at all? Grab the life PREservers, the titanic is going down

Why so cynical? Don’t you want to play Move the Deck Chairs as the ship starts to Veer sharply into its final shaking, grinding, whining, moaning, steel ripping downward icy plunge into the darkest ocean bowels? You think one of them new fangled plane thingies is the way to cross the Atlantic? Heavens, didn’t you know there were two small dogs that survived the Titanic. One was a tiny Pomeranian, owned by a rather flamboyant Margaret Hays from New York, and the other was a tiny Pekingese, called Sun Yat Sen (I kid you not, at least not this time, mate) owned by Henry Sleeper Harper (what’s a name when you have a tiny dog shoved into your tuxedo?) of the publishing family.

My Franken pre is already giving me a problem with the telephone jack sticking in telephone mode during calls. I had the prob with my pre minus but not this bad and I was able to fix it by cleaning the contacts in the jack…or at least the problem stopped after I did this. Will have to try again with my Frank pre. I thought Pre was an improvement on pre minus?

    • Alan

I mean stuck in telephone mode where I have to use speakerphone

    • Greg Mair

No. People just called it PRE- after the PRE+ was announced.

So a Pre is a PRE-

Dude I’m guessing when you did the swap you used the old Pre- back plate which houses the jack. Therefore you have your old jack in the new phone. Pop it out and swap it with the on in the GSM backplate from the Pre 2

That’s right…I forgot. Will need to open her up again and see if a cleaning fixes it again.

    • Alan

Well cleaning the contacts did not work this time. But I was able to pop out the phone plug module and switch it with the one from my remains of the conversion and that seemed to do the trick…still not sure what’s going bad but suspect the bendable contacts may be looking their spring and not connecting with the pads properly???

I just stumbled on this, will you be making the video available for download? Also, if a Pre has a bad ESN does popping the radio into a Pre2 bring the bad ESN over as well?

I have a friend in the sawmill industry who cuts things into nice veneers. Just for one brief femtosecond I had an image of a particularly excruciating adverse event happening to the right along the oreo line on my pre.

Sorry, I forgot to tell you something pretty sparky. It’s about the benefits of having an End of Life Pre Minus. YOU all thought, ha ha, we will reshape the $hitter into a modern lawnmower toilet seat combo device, but, my friends, that approach comes from a land far away, a land where DynoSawyers chew Pre- carcasses and make them stronger by abusing them just short of letting the final drip of life-sap drip on the blistering desert sand, a land where Real Believers make lounge seat veneer out of three week old dried kangaroo ligaments, a strange and wonderful world where things remain pre-Flash, pre-PDF, pre-file folder, pre-pretty much all the urban clutter $hit you get on most other smart TV shows, a world where arsenic has replaced phosphorus in DNA codes, and silicon comes as homeomorphic buckieballs that swing topologically in the early glint of each new dawn. Anyway, a funny thing happened on the way back from the Bubble Gum Candy Store (that’s this time line in case you missed the transition from your world to mine.) I called Sprint and told them I wanted to unretire one of my June 6, 2009 Tingle Tazers… AAAAAAA, was the response, right…. and after some semi-catatonic aboriginal disco moves someone (wonder who that was, was that you, Joseph?) made out like a firework-driven bandit on an oilrig with a $125 rebate and a new free phone, ANY new phone, rather than shaking the plunger in my left nostril and bringing the Mighty Dog out of retirement. Kazzyam (I said) another android, yum yum, yum. What can I say, life can be fun when you keep your Oreo Platypus mp3 weapon dry, well-oiled, and dust free.
