HP Responds: Veer’s “Big Push” is Coming “In the Weeks Ahead”

By: , 5/17/2011 7:54 pm | 46 comments

As you’ve probably gathered from our readers’ “field reports” on Veer Launch Day, we’re all scratching our heads about the “big marketing push” that never came. Surely, a tech juggernaut like HP had more muscle than Palm to push a device… at least enough so AT&T employees would greet inquiring Veer customers with more than a blank stare (or Samsung Infuse T-shirts)?!

Well, along with some other Veer launch details, HP’s Sean Lindo (Developer Communications Manager) addressed that issue point-blank in his latest Palm Developer Blog entry:

“… we are making a big push around the Veer and you’ll start to see that in the weeks ahead. Of course, we’re also making sure sales representatives across our channels are properly trained on all the great things about the Veer. In addition, advertising and demand generation activities will be kicking off later this month, so the Veer will be everywhere.”

So there you have it, folks. Sure, it’s a good spoonful of the “party line” from HP (and we’re still scratching our heads a little), but at least they’re aware of our bellyaching and are reassuring us that webOS’ elusive marketing push is indeed coming in “the weeks ahead.”

… Hey, at least it’s not in the MONTHS ahead!

flattr this!

Hey, HP kept the updated App Catalog promise.  And it looks like the Touchpad and Pre 3 are right around the corner.

It makes sense to not really push the Veer until the Touchpad is out to be paired with it, but I have seen a few text ads for it online since Sunday. :)

I’ve been saying that the whole time! They won’t push the Veer until they have the TouchPad out because the Veer is mostly designed as a companion to the TouchPad.

Ok, for a few months now, I’ve tried being patient and supportive of the company that represents WebOS, but everything just keeps getting swept under a rug and pushed off to a later date. I would jump ship right now…but that pre 3 and touchpad look too cool to pass on lol.

I wonder if we’ll ever actually see HP’s “future”. Everything is “in the coming months” or “in the weeks ahead”.

    • http://www.webosroundup.com/ DanR

No, when a company says “weeks,” it’s usually for real…….. except for that one time when their CEO said something about launching new products “in a matter of weeks (sic)” several umm… MONTHS ago. :p

In all seriousness rest assured that HP’s tidal wave is coming. Dunno how big it’s gonna be, but it’s coming soon.

Lol, big joke insert here. “weeks”= weak HP

Why wouldn’t they um… just push the veer when it launches? #commonsensecompanypracticesthathpdoesntseemtoundestand

The thing is, patience is all we have. When the ball starts to roll, we have to have that faith that the momentum is behind it, as it rolls down hill. And it sounds like it is all going to be flowing and hp obviously has plans for everything they do. I’m excited. The touchpad has everything I need and all I would want is the keyboard and touchstone. And a battery life of at least 9 hours.

I don’t give a rat’s behind what they say NOW, after the fact.  If they weren’t ready to push it, it was just STUPID to launch it.  How many of us walked into an ATT store Sunday to be absolutely mortified at what we saw: brainless sales reps running around with their sweet Enthuse t-shirts, who had NO ******* IDEA what  the Veer was.  Actual conversation:  Me: “Where’s the Veer?”; Sales Assoc: “Huh?  Where’s the beer?  It’s Sunday morning!”; Me: “No, the Veer.  The new phone that came out today.”; SA: pointing to his shirt, “This is the big phone release, today!”; Me, pointing to the empty store, other than me: “Yeah, I see the crowd of people that are lined up to get it.”; SA: (insert cricket sounds here)

They have done NOTHING to win my trust that they will come through.  I love Palm and have since I can’t remember when, but when I see this cluster of a launch, I almost wish Apple had bought Palm and incorporated some of their features into iOS.  That would be a lot less painful than watching this, time after disappointing time.  (Almost like being a Detroit Lions fan.)

I’m going to add a comment to your AT&T store experience. I may be on Sprint but I know my smartphones across platforms (i chose WebOS for how I use my smartphone it works smoother for me) none the less I have friends on each of the 4 major carriers and when they go phone shopping they take me with so they don’t get suckered into a phone from sales people in samsung shirts. Let me tell you every AT&T store I have gone into the sales reps there are utter morons. Like with Android questions I’ll ask them (just to see if they know what they’re pushing) I’ll ask them what version of Android is on there.. I get that same blank expression you got asking for the Veer and they will nod and say “yes Android is on this phone” WTF!? My AT&T friends don’t even go to AT&T stores anymore. They choose going to a Best Buy.. And in this case you should of anyways because the Veer was free at Best Buy with a new contract/contract renewal. I don’t know what the criteria for working at an AT&T store is but they seem as helpful as a highschool kid working at an Ambercrombie retail clothing store. Haha… It’s rare you find someone in an AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon or Sprint store that knows what the heck is going on… Always go to a corporate store for any carrier when dealing for new phones or phone problems though.. The satellite stores are actually franchise owned by someone else not directly by the carrier and the owner of the said franchise..err I mean “satelite” store has the final word on what he trains or tells his employees about. So for example if you walk into a “satelite” store owned by an Android fan boy.. And you want WebOS.. Expect crickets.. Next time try Best Buy.. At least you stand a higher percentage rate of running into someone that knows what they are talking about because they actually read what’s going on.. Including web pages like here, precentral, android central and iphone pages.. I actually was in a Best Buy and a sales person was explaining to a new possible WebOS user about preware, homebrew and how it’s allowed and how it really opens the gates of possibilities to customizing their phone and pointed them to the app in the app catalog that explains how to install everything… Just saying mistake one you made was walking into an actuall AT&T store.. And don’t get me started on AT&Ts customer service that forwards you to an out source in India to some guy with a heavy accent saying his name is jenny.. (and yes that has happened to me calling while fixing my friends AT&T phone.. Lol)

The big push a couple of weeks after the release date makes perfect sense to me. Make sure your product is in the pipeline. Make sure the reps are properly trained. Have key releases such as the Touchpad that line up with your ‘Big Push’. Call me an optimist, but I have faith on this one. Besides, all I really want is my new Pre3 anyway!

For all the complainers, do you care more about seeing ads on TV or getting a webOS device in your hands? If you don’t plan on buying the Veer, why complain because there are no commercials? HP will push it’s ad campaign according to it’s own schedule.

I trust HP & their leadership, things will work out well.

Great! “in the weeks ahead”. Yes, I am surely going to believe them this time! And, I truly believe I will be winning a million dollars in the lottery. The only problem is I don’t play the lottery. Talking heads. That’s all. Sigh.

I have faith HP’s direction for the phone products. My gut feeling is that they will launch this big in the enterprise culture, as well as, the consumer arena. I’ve been very patient & I believe it will payoff. Keep the faith..

This post just aggrivates me more than ever that HP doesn’t have it’s act together. I went from being excited about the new OS devices to feeling meh, to now not giving a rats ass. I just signed up to get info on the new Evo 3D. Looks like a faster processor and I can even watch Netflix on it. I now officially declare the end of my love for Pre / Web OS!

    • Marv

Amen brother just reserved my evo 3d for 50 bucks.

Not at all regreting my decision to get the Nexus S..

FRUSTRATING IT IS HOWEVER, WE AS SPRINT CUSTOMERS WHO ARE ALSO WE OS ENTHUSIASTS MUST WAIT UNTIL AUGUST 15TH TO GET IN ON H/P’S 90 DAY EXCLUSIVE RELEASE. SPRINT AND H/P HAVE NEVER LEFT EACH AND HAVE WORKED OUT ANY MINOR DIFFERENCES THEY MAY HAVE HAD. WE ALL KNOW ABOUT AT&T GETTING THE VEER. VERIZON JULY 15TH(or sooner) WILL BE GETTING THE H/P PRE 3. SPRINT WILL BE GETTING A HAND HELD DEVICE THAT WILL PUT BOTH OF THEM TO SHAME. YES, IT HAS A NAME. YES, IT HAS A VITUAL KEYBOARD. YES, IT HAS GORILLA GLASS. YES, THE HARDWARE WILL BE BUILT LIKE THE VEER. YES, IT WILL COME WITH VERSION 2.0.5. YES, IT WILL HAVE MORE THEN ONE WOULD EVER EXPECT AND NONE BEFORE THAT THE WORLD MOBILE DEVICE MARKET HAS EVER SEEN BEFORE. YES, IT WILL BE 3D. PLEASE E PATIENT AND YOU WILL SEE FOR YOURSELVES THAT MY INFORMATION IS ALWAYS TRUTHFUL AND FORTHRIGHT. P.S. ONLY A FEW OF SPRINTS TECHNICAL SUPPORT TEAM HAVE HAD THE PRIVALEDGE OF GETTING HANDS ON TRAINING BY H/P THEMSELVES…YES, IT IS QUITE A FEW WEEKS BUT IT IS ALSO ONLY A COUPLE OF MONTHS FOR US DEVOTED AND DEDICATED SPRINT CUSTOMERS…GOD BLESS & BEST REGARDS,

    • Still Here & Hangin On

QUIT postn IN caps U dumbass!
And, no I want Pre3 ON Sprint, NOT some make – believe device with a virtual keyboard. Still using preORIG on Sprint. It’s not a – it’s the original.

    • JDM

Well there’s our Allcaps captain. We missed you, there, for a while… Um, well, “missed” might not be an appropriate use of the word. We apparently missed you while launching boulders at your head :)

  • PalmOn

Blah, blah, blah. Still no new webos phone worth buying.

  • Kataran

I keep reading all this hooplah on my scratched pre- I can hold on a while longer I think

  • Wmmc2001us

Do we all here on the PRE Blogs really think HP gives a lot of credence to us?  How many MILLIONS of consumers looking for a Smartphone, will walk into AT&T/Best Buy and ask for a VEER? NONE, so now we know why they are in the back, still packed un-charged, un-known and un-sold
If they had run a marketing blitz on VEER only, then people would walk in and say “where is the Touch-Pad, the PRE 3″ and HP would loose a lot of credibility in the Mobility market. So.,.. very smart on their part to get the Veer out, in the stores,  and slowly getting reps to touch it feel it, answer questions from HP’s Technical field plants (ie. all of us on the blogs).. then when PRE3 and Touch-Pad are ready to launch and deliver, they go ALL  out marketing, on tv radio, internet with ads and messages.
Now you have a PRODUCT Launch 2nd to none, even Apple who launches one device at a time.  HP is launching a Strategy based on CLOUD Computing, Connectivity, Mobility and Devices from Smart-phones, to Touch-Pads, E-Printers and who knows maybe even a Toaster!
In business, there are those who make dust and those who eat it, remember “If you’re not the lead dog, the view is not pleasant.”  We PRE users are the Lead Dogs, so our view; while sometimes frustrating is much better than the view of the dogs that follow us! Just remember that,.
HP to make it right is not even a drop in the $$ Bucket compared to one days sales after launch, so hang in there for your HP Make It Right Gift?
    Just saying IMHO…

  • Matt

    So what

  • BadBoyBri

I’m VERY disappointed in HP!! Their So Called Master Plan SUCKS!! It Makes No Damn Sense to release a phone, that not only do you NOT have enough made, but you don’t even intend to advertize for it, until ” the coming weeks”! They ould have just waited!!! HP either doesn’t REALLY care about the Veer and Pre 3, or they have a BUNCH of Over Paid Knucleheads working for them. Im making My Official Announcement Now!! The iPhone 4S is coming to Sprint!! So, it will be First Come, First Serve, for me!! The Pre 3 or iPhone 4S!! My bet is on the iPhone 4S, Hands Down!! And WHEN that happens, I won’t be looking back!!

    • TimmyB

Ahhh, but you’re missing the point.  They DO have enough made.  I think they manufactured 500 of them, and that’s about what they will sell with their superior marketing!

      • BadBoyBri

I don’t think they will sell 100. Your average Joe doesn’t even know it exists. And those that do know, are waiting for the Pre 3.hP has REALLY messed this up. Palm was doin BETTER by themselves!!!

  • Andy

I have a feeling that if they are planning an advertising push in the coming weeks for the veer, than we can also expect solid release and carrier information for the pre3 and touchpad in the coming weeks. I think they held the advertising off until they were ready to have that other information ready to accompany it. At least that’s what I’m hoping for.
