HP Veer 4G Available Today – Updated

By: , 5/15/2011 4:15 pm | 29 comments

It’s here folks. The first of HP’s new line of webOS devices went on sale today: The AT&T HP Veer 4G is now available through AT&T for $99.99 with a two-year contract, and free through Best Buy. If you’re looking to get your hands on one contract-free, this little guy will cost you a hefty $449.99. Strangely, the AT&T online store only has the black one available, while Best Buy has both the black and white models up for purchase. Checking a few zip codes for Best Buy in-store availability yielded zero results, but we hope this will change in the coming days.

Along with the Veer’s release, the Palm.com website has gone through a complete makeover, matching the dark theme of the HP.com website with the Veer front and center on a rotating banner along with the TouchPad and Pre 3. The support pages also now include the HP Veer. As for the TV ads and the media blitz we’ve been hoping to see? Well, it’s been a whimper so far, but let’s hope HP’s muscle will pull our little buddy through.

New to the Veer or thinking of picking one up? Our editors have put it through its paces here:

Update #2: The Amazon HP Veer deal now has the “Phone Only” price at $349.99. The price for the phone on contract is $49.99.

Update: Amazon is currently listing the HP Veer at only $49.99 off-contract- that’s 88% off of its list price of $399.99.

So what do you think? Is this THE phone for you? Sound off in our comments!

If it were on Sprint I would have to give it serious consideration. I think along with the upcoming touchpad it would be a good device. As most of the Sprint customers say…ill have to wait for the pre3 if and when it comes to my carrier.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to see the Veer coming to Sprint (without some sort of radical component consolidation)–the CDMA and WiMax radios are just too big for a tiny phone.  Since LTE is a worldwide standard, though, once someone gets a small-enough LTE radio out there, it may show up on Verizon (at least when they don’t need CDMA as a fallback) and as a newer AT&T version with actual 4G.

    what about uk?

    • Davyboy

Hear hear for the uk. I’m not interested in the veer as I could do with larger screen (I carried a treo 650 in my pocket for ages so size isn’t an issue). But I *am* following the progress of the veer closely to see how long it takes to go international. I want to get a pre3 this summer if I can – my 6 month old replacement preplus is already showing a bit of age (mic seems to fail intermittently). I’m just getting an HTC Desire Z for a technologically inept friend, and I must say everything about it except the lack of multitasking looks damn attractive.

I bought a veer today and had to exchange it because of radio poblems. Two other people were also waiting with broken veers.

Sorry to hear that manufacturing bugs are happening.  Best buy and ATT websites aren’t exactly showcasing the Veer on its launch day.  A bit disappointing. A website showcase would be a nice start (easy and cheap)  ATT is especially irritating, still putting Iphone 4 and even 3gs upfront.

Of course, Veer has prominent genetics

I’ll be unconvinced until I hold one in my hand.  However, I have to think maybe-but-probably not.  Wanna use it for a bit.

It’s great to see that WebOS lives to see another day. Like John K. Said I also can’t wait for the Pre 3 to come out on the sprint network

We’ll see if that Amazon price is good. Just ordered one!

    • Anonymous

      ordered one too haha

I just bought one from Amazon.  For $50 I couldn’t pass it up… even though I’ve frankly said some unkind things about the Veer (about what I feel its ultimate level of success will be really, not so much about whether it’s a good device or not) and I’ve actually been using an Android, mostly happily, for a few months now… but for that price I just HAVE to have one, even though I won’t be using it as a phone :)

WOW! $49.99 on Amazon off contract, I just purchased it! I won’t be using it as a phone, but I saw it in AT&T Store today and its so tiny and badass! I’ll def turn it into a dev device and use for other misc stuff! Great deal!

Could amazon cancel all of these, surely this was a mistake by someone who works there?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GOMMIIK5URRJ2IPJFLMWNOFIII Mario

Sorry, but when you search the Veer 4G on Amazon, the device is in the “Cell Phones with Service” sub-category of Cell Phones & Accessories, not the “Unlocked Phones” one. In my view (as a lawyer), it is Amazon’s intention to sell the Veer with a phone/data contract of some kind. If it didn’t give you one at checkout, that doesn’t stop them from contacting you later to get your info for a contract. Amazon goofed in the checkout process by not directing you to choose your plan. At the very least, it ought to give you the option of cancelling your order.

I’ll for sure cancel my order if they try and tie me to a phone contract.. we definitely ought to be given that option to opt out if this is the case..

Haha, they’ve pulled it.. now whether or not they’ll honor the ones purchased..

  • PalmOn

I held the Veer in my hand yesterday at an AT&T store. It was not turned on, but my impression is that this phone is at it’s best a mobile hot spot device with smart phone capabilities. Too bad there is no TouchPad available to make the hot spot capabilities worth buying.

  • PalmOn

    It’s just too small.

  • Dcllero

Walked into an AT&T Store to check out the Veer. A couple of rookie mistakes by HP.
    1. Many stores now charge their phones via their security devices. HP did not provide any adapters for the magnetic port and the phone is displayed but no charge.
    2. No training for AT&T Staff. Sales rep admitted to not knowing that device even exisisted, much less about any of it’s features. HP should not rely an on carriers to provide knowledge to it’s staff and highlight HP products. Maybe HP can even offer direct incentives to sales reps.

Lastly, there was ZERO marking collateral. The veer is small, you need big marketing. HP hire me in DC, and I can sell your devices.
