HP Veer 4G for AT&T in Developer Device Program!

By: , 5/23/2011 1:21 pm | 26 comments

I suppose better late than never is appropriate under the circumstances. The mighty HP Veer has been available on AT&T and from HP, BestBuy and Amazon from $0 to $99 with a 2yr contract since May 15th. It has been met with mixed (perhaps even polar) reviews and has seen little marketing to date. But today it was announced as being available for $279 via the Developer Device Program. Just follow the instructions on the site and wait for your email with your coupon code.

It should be noted that from all appearances this is the AT&T edition, not an unlocked GSM version like the Pre 2 initially was in it’s Developer Device debut. The news from the HP webOS Developer Center makes sure to mention that the Pre 2 discount coupon is still available as well. I am certain that will make any developers still waiting for their coupons very happy. Here’s to hoping this effort is managed a little more efficiently than the last.

flattr this!

$279.00? They’d better give developers the Veer for substantially less than that, if not for free, if they want folks to develop for it. $279.00? Wow!

I have no problem with the price.  You do understand that it’s basically a mini computer.  Those parts are expensive.  Now if they made the Veer unlocked, that would be better.  Don’t like that it’s locked to AT&T.

Seems like a lot of money to me when the success of webos largely depends on attracting developers. To me, the price seems like it could be a roadblock to some. I guess time will tell.

Sorry if HP doesn’t have infinite resources for your liking.  If it was free, developers and non developers would be going this avenue.  Gotta have an entry for serious devs.

Well, Precentral is now reporting the possible giving away free TouchPads to developers if they like their apps I’m progress. See their article on their web site. What do all of you here think now?

We reported on that as well…that program is to entice devs to come to their hands on sessions. My guess is that very few free TouchPads will be given out.

Well, sorry if I don’t see it, but $279 for a phone that probably won’t sell well just seems like a lot to me. Any stats on how Veer sales have been so far?

I agree w Robbie C. $279 is a pretty fair price. They were asking more for the Pre/Pre Plus developer phones, if I’m not mistaken.

Yeah, I’m in for an unlocked Veer as well.  It does not make sense for a developer in Mexico to have it locked to AT&T :P

I would say that you could bypass activation and just use it as WiFi.

How much is the Pre2 Developer Device now since the Veer is out now for 279$

    • http://twitter.com/bnceo Robbie C

Probably no change, considering it has some higher specs.

Sorry but i am not spending 279$ for device that is under par with the Veer, i say it a thousand times don’t
be fooled with these higher specs, the Pre2 now with the coming of the Veer, just a old Device prices has
        to drop.

You do, however, need to get to one of their upcoming events for a chance to get a free TouchPad. If HP can afford to give free TouchPads to developers, surely they can do the same with the Veer (that is, unless the Veer costs twice to make as the TouchPad–which I doubt.

You don’t “have” to go to the events, sure they prefer it.  My problem is there are none in my area.
