Pre 3 gets some FCC love…a Verizon world phone?

By: , 5/11/2011 9:36 am | 81 comments

Man, I tell you, that FCC site gets to handle all the goodies! I mean seriously, how do they always get the scoops?!

[Editor whispers in David's ear]

What’s that? The FCC is the government and it is their job to make sure that the gizmos don’t fry your brain? Ah…well then…yeah…ok. Sooo….nevermind, I don’t want that job.

Anyways! The FCC got their grubby government hands on the Pre 3 and it got approved!

The Pre 3 is a CMDA phone which means that it could, in theory, run on Sprint, but all signs currently point to Verizon. The FCC also let it be known that it has global GSM capabilities which makes the device, in effect, a world phone.

So that means that the FCC has approved a GSM only variant (probably AT&T) and now a world phone. Can we get some official carrier love now?

Thanks for the tip Terry!

flattr this!

  • Matt_99_hey

i dont think sprint wants anything to do with webos. android is their sauce.

    • Marcel

Android sucks! It takes 7 steps to do what webos does in 2

      • Lisa

Ditto on androids extra steps. Closing an app in it is a nightmare. But….to quote apple… There’s an app for that.

        • Marcel

          Lol that was good!!

          • Malette

            Agreed!

        • Cvb

Well I hava an android and palm pre and I love them both but on the android to close apps all you have to do is get the app killer

    • Dude

It’s Sprint’s loss then. Really, I don’t think the soon-to-be-irrelevant carrier should be picky about what phones they will carry…

    • Raun

Hp and sprint have just signed a huge prepaid 3g contract. Can we please stop this nonsense about sprint and hp webos? It’s just that, nonsense.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sweetgreggo Gregory Gammill

What are all of these signs that point to Verizon?

    • http://profiles.google.com/4r4qgwayne Wayne The Great

uuummm……. world phone CDMA and GSM.
      No WiMAX
Sprint is full of Android at the moment.

      • http://www.facebook.com/sweetgreggo Gregory Gammill

Sprint has world phones, too. The lack of WiMax doesn’t mean anything. Does the “v” on the IC number always show up on Verizon phones?

    • Anonymous

The V designation at the end of the IC number.

      • Wiesel

If I took this as a joke, I might smile a bit.Other than that, that “V” (for Vendetta) suggesting Verizon in a little ridiculous. But again, this is what hopelessness looks like, I hope you take notes HP/VERIZON

        • Adam

Could The “V” at the end of the FCC license number not stand for “Veer” vice “Verizon”? C’mon people, stop hating on Sprint. Sprint has already indicated an OS phone is coming. It may have a virtual keyboard, but Hell, at least it’s an OS phone!

    • http://AToTheT.org/ Ajay

For example the talk by the vz ceo or whoever abt webOS being the third platform, the fact that sprint wouldnt carry the pre2, the way they’re really into “world phones” lately, and likely other things I’m not aware of..

What if I buy an unlocked CDMA Pre3, would it run on SRINT?

    • Dude

Unlocked CDMA? Do they sell those kinds of phones?

      • Anonymous

        I don’t know :-)

        • Cristian

Why shoul verizon get it when spritn was the one how first rales the pre minus and verizon just copied it plees sprint get the pre 3

          • Me

Umm, Verizon copied the pre minus?  Verizon doesn’t make Pre phones, Palm/HP does.  Also, why act like Verizon doesn’t deserve it?  Personally I hope all HP phones come to Sprint, Verizon, AT&T and any other carrier who will have them.  The more available phones there are, the better chance of WebOS succeeding and getting better apps.

  • John K.

If the PRE3 doesn’t land on Sprint, to hell with HP and webOs. I hope they enjoyed the $$$ from the first and only PRE I’ll ever own

    • Dude

Oh no, they will be devastated. How do I break the news to them that you will separate?

    • TimmyB

Don’t you think your anger should be directed at Sprint? It’s not HP’s decision, it’s Sprint’s. I totally understand your frustration, but man, is it misguided.

  • Greg M

So is the FCC for only USA or is it North America?. If not has anythinf went through canada’s FCC system or whih ever name it goes by?.

    • Dude

FCC is only for USA, it is an American federal agency.

      • Greg M

Yes we have the same thing in Canada. Pretty every country has one similar. My question was, whats it called and did it go through up here for a Full North American launch. Rogers or Bell.

  • Jteply

I just dont know why wouldn’t they just come out with a Sprint and Verizon phone. Like we have been saying, GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT!

Then, convince Sprint to pick it up. You think HP (or ANY phonemaker) wants it’s devices to be sold in fewer places???

      • John K.

Timmy, how many years was the IPhone only on at&t? Exclusivity and the best selling phone for how long? On the worst carrier

  • PalmOn

Like I’ve been saying, HP/PALM CANNOT BE TRUSTED. I guess the something special they said they would be doing for the current webos base is screw over all of us–really, really well. While there is nothing currently wrong with my Sprint Pre, if there is no webos device equal or better and the Pre 3 on Sprint by the end of June, Android here I come. I will not show any support for webos after that. I will not buy anymore webos apps either. In fact, I stopped buying them after HP/Palm screwed us all out of the 2.0 OTA upgrade they promised. Oh well. It’s just another bad day for webos and Sprint. I am getting more and more used to these. My hand is currently about half outstretched to the Sprint Nexus S which I checked out recently. It’s awesome!

At what point are all the naysayers going to realize that it might just be Sprint being the bad guy? I love how so many Sprint devotees just jump to the conclusion that HP is holding back. Do you have proof of that?

      • Dude

I guess there’s a reason why Sprint is third, and soon to be a very, very distant third.

      • John K.

Do you have proof it’s not HP? I guess because Palm burned some bridge a while ago with T-Mobile it couldn’t be the manufacturer, it must be the carrier.

  • Marcel

Sprint better be getting a webos phone soon. Sprint is providing broadband for HP computers so why they hell don’t they carry the new phones?

  • Tony J Cooke

Here in the UK my 18 month contract on Pre/O2 was up last month and there are NO signs of anyone taking up the Pre3 so I have reluctantly decided this week that my patience has come to an end and I`m off to the Android camp. Sorry HPalm but you had your chance and you blew it. :-(

    • Wiesel

EVERYONE, how bout unite this individual frustration protest against HP/SPRINT by creating a dedicated forum/page/website/facebook account/Idontcarewhatelse, just so everyone can express their feelings and so forth. In a way, just like making call/sending faxes to the White House. I mean, we stuck to their outdated devices for so long, there’s nothing else lamer we could ome up with!!

      • Guest

        There’s already a facebook group.

      • Dude

I remember a while ago there was a poll at Sprint asking customers what OS they think Sprint should focus on in the future. IIRC, webOS won by a landslide. They probably just put that option up just because and never expected it to win. That’s why nothing has come from Sprint yet, and no plans for Sprint have been announced.

    • Davyboy

You could always change your tarrif on O2 to a less expensive one (I know I get waaay more texts and minutes than I could possibly use) and then buy the pre2 unlocked. I realise it doesn’t spread the cost like a subsidised contract but it’s a path and one I plan on if my pre plus ever goes south. I personally have a theory that O2 UK got the pre and just sat on it so there was no competition for the iphone, although no one could stop the flood of android devices. It’s just a theory!

  • Knishknosh

While i am hoping, praying (do you hear me FSM) that Sprint will have a new Web OS phone (and Tablet; i know i’m pushing it here) i know they may not. Either way, come the end of the summer i will see what’s available at Sprint or Verizon or other and make a decision. Stay with Web OS and do in Two steps what android does in 7, or switch to Android, where i can actually do stuff i nseven steps that Web OS cant do. I love WEB OS, but hey, we’ll see.

  • Kataran

It’s not HP’s fault…if sprint isn’t going to carry WebOs phones anymore..then direct your customer support to say it’s so when we ask them…if there honest than I could maybe throw some blame to HP for not trying just to save some face..but right now all sprint tries to do is sell us palm users an android when they know what were carrying

  • Dex

Even though it ends with a V doesn’t mean it’s going to Verizon. The GSM version ends with a N, so what does N stand for?

    • http://twitter.com/tsaunders tsaunders

      Not Sprint! – :P

  • Barth Harrington

Does anyone know if the Pre3 will be available in Ireland. My O2 contract runs out at the end of the summer. Many thanks.

  • Kataran

Just installed the patch removing the sprint from the topbar and replacing it with palm….ahhhh!!! Feel better

  • Brandon

Is it just me, or am I the only one that remembers the photo and leak of info about a slab webOS phone from a few weeks back that is supposed to be a Sprint exclusive? Any chance there’s a possibility that Sprint and HPalm have something really special cooked up and are keeping really hush hush for now?

    • Dude

I don’t believe that at all. It was just a generic slab phone (they all look the same, really) sitting next to a Pre.

If “Special” equals a price-reduced, (see “HP making it up to you”), webOS 2.X device for current/former Sprint Palm Pre (minus) owners that supported this phone & platform on Day One devices… “Excellent”
Otherwise it’s just more hopeful chatter from those poor brainwashed souls who still think that “Palm” or any semblance of it still exists within the Monolithic Corporate Halls of HP (ie the business formerly known as Hewlitt-Packard)…

I just opened up my Sprint Pre and looked at the FCC ID and it doesn’t have anything that would indicate it is a Sprint phone. How certain is it that the “V” at the end of the FCC ID indicates the carrier?

  • mattmcmatters

So why is everyone jumping ship going to Android. There are other options. Windows Phone 7 is actually very impressive and the Iphone is still awesome. I love my webOS, and hopefully come September of this year I’ll be looking at a Pre3 or a sweet webOS slab. But if HP can’t rescue my favorite IS from demise, Android will be the LAST IS I’ll run to. Put your prejudices and preconceptions aside, and go and take a new and honest look at the Iphone and Windows Phone 7. Please, stay away from Android. Long term, I think Android will become a very frustrating IS.

    • mattmcmatters

IS is supposed to be OS. Damn you auto correct!

    • Marv

I agree with ur comments about Android but with every update their interface is getting slicker and slicker and their phones are matching and getting close to surpassing Apple. They thing with google you have to respect is their operating system is younger than webos and they have surpassed apple in a very short amount of time. I know HP just acquired WebOS but they have made some serious blunders in my opion that will be hard to bounce back from.

Can anyone explain what this fuzz is all about? Can’t you buy unlocked phones in the US and put whatever carrier you like in the phone? Seems strange to me as a non-us guy. So if a carrier don’t bring in the phone you can’t buy it? Always buy unlocked phones and choose the carrier that suits my need not the carrier. So what’s up over there?

    • Sonnysuave

The problem is, out of the 3 main carriers in the U.S. (at&t, verizon, sprint)… ONLY 1 of the carriers (at&t) uses gsm phones (phone activated by sim card), while the other 2 carriers (verizon, sprint) uses cdma phones (phone activated only by the carrier / no sim card). So… if u’re with at&t, u can use ur sim card w/ unlocked gsm phones. But if u’re with sprint or verizon, u can only use their phones (no such thg as unlocked cdma phones).

      • Haze

Thank you for clarifying! Strange to have two different standards in the same country. But at least now I know what you are talking about.

  • Strife Sprint HP

Sprint will be carrying an hp phone during the summer. They’ve already started selling broadban hp computers on sprint.. We are just weeks away from hearing the confirmation guys!

    • PalmOn

Do you have this on good authority? Do you work for Sprint? If so, what are they getting and when?

  • Corwinsr

Where do you get “all signs currently point to Verizon”? The signs in your head? The Palm brand has been with Sprint for DECADES and no one else. The Pre launch at Sprint – contrary to Interweb myth was a success for both Sprint and Palm and met both of their financial expectations and exceeded Palms. Palm is still a unique and separate branch of HP with largely the same people running the operation and have the ear of Leo Apotheker, the CEO of HP – and they have clearly indicated a desire to stay with Sprint. Two days ago HP and Sprint launched DataPass for Laptops on the Sprint 3G network. Sprint and HP are clearly still very much partners so contrary to the signs in David Baxter’s head, all the signs in the real world point to Sprint (the original CDMA network by the way) – not Verizon.

    • Marv

      Nice comment

    • PalmOn

Verizon because apparently the model number of the Pre 3 very recently registered with the FCC ends with the letter “V”–suggesting it is slated for a Verizon lauch (as reported on engaget).

HP/Palm’s customer service skills are lacking these days. I am an example of it. Anytime I have talked to the glorious people in Sunnyvale, CA – none of my concerns have been taken seriously. I’m past my 48 hour elevated window without a call once again. I hope someone from HP/Palm is reading this out there. Better get with the program. After my recent dealing with HP/Palm I am most likely done with Palm. I love Pre smartphones and webos – but HP/Palm doesn’t respect the people who have spent money on their products. Regarding the Pre 3 – HP/Palm should take note of advertizing. Without the advertizing like (rim – playbook) they will undoubtedly fail with webos and the former entity that was Palm. Blackberry Playbook is killing in television advertizing! All the time I see there ad’s. Where are HP/Palm ad’s for the new Veer or the upcoming Pre 3? Its insane. I can actually remember the original Pre ad’s more than anything I’ve seen from HP/Palm – in fact there were no Pre 2 ad’s! My two cent’s.
