South Central U.S. webOS Developer Event?

By: , 5/19/2011 1:36 pm | 28 comments

webOS developers have had the opportunity to get together for some great food, fun, fellowship and a little webOS fundamentals familiarization (did you notice what i did with all the f’s there). They have done it on the East coast, they have done it on the West coast and are about to do it in Europe at the Paris and Berlin developer events. However it has not yet been done anywhere in the central United States. That simply must change.

Just a few short weeks ago we had the privilege of having Richard Kerris, V.P. of Worldwide webOS Developer Relations on a special edition of the webOSradio podcast. During the podcast Mr. Kerris mentioned the fact that I had been doing a bit of lobbying for an event somewhere in the Midwest or South central U.S. He was telling the truth. I probably show up on several HP employees blocked email lists as a result. All of that lobbying however is useless without a little research and planning to lure the big dogs out into fly over country. So here is your chance to contribute to the cause by casting your votes for a possible location for such an event. This poll is by no means official, but I hope to get enough responses for a given location or two to merit some interest from HP. If you have additional suggestions or input drop a note to [email protected] .

flattr this!

I’m biased, but Houston is a good city to fly into.

Hello from the Palm GBU mothership. We are watching this poll, both for location and # of responses. So yeah, vote and tell your friends ;)

Just emailed in my request for D/FW…

I think Chicago should be on the table.  Easy and relatively cheap for everyone to get to.

The poll is for the South-Central area. There is a make shift meetup in St. Louis I think Fot the mid-west. I think Tim Stiffler-Dean (@anotherguy) is trying to get that together.

      • Rich

Yes, although I think the voting results worked out to be Chicago, just North of the city. That one doesn’t have a date yet and at the moment is webOS meetup. I think they are shooting for the end of July or early August.

I think Dallas is closest to me :)

  • DrNo

Austin, TX is a very tech savvy place and a great place to visit

  • Dude

I’d like an event in Florida. Orlando would probably be the best location.

Wasn’t there already a Dallas event?  It is time for Austin!

    • Rich

There was a paid conference in Dallas. I think it was $1400 if you were an early bird. This isn’t quite the same as that. But seriously, it’s the same distance from Austin to Dallas as it is from OKC to Dallas. Plus it makes it reachable for the folks in Kansas City too.

Like Rich said, breaking development had a WebOS presentation but it was quite pricey. Wonder what the attendance was?

I’ve been advocating a WebOS appearance at the Big Design Conference in Dallas this July. It’s a lot less expensive ($175 vs $1400), spans two days, and there’s 4 tracks running each day. Pretty good value for attendees, but WebOS would just be one dish on the menu. Would people rather have one big WebOS event or a little bit of WebOS at interdisciplinary conferences?

I suspect that there just aren’t enough WebOS enthusiasts in the Midwest/South (yet) to justify the costs of a dedicated event paid for by HP. But why aren’t they sending speakers out to more conferences?

     Umm, Ohio valley please!

St. Louis is a good central location for the midwest and center point between the east and west coast

My vote should count as 2 votes … and I vote Austin! A lot of tech happening over there.

    • Rich

LOL…. and you are going to attend to help make it a possibility/reality?

  • Racin’ Rick

Austin would be my first choice then Big D.

Unsung Houston has lots of iOS devs – HP is looking to bring in new folks, right?  And, it’s cheap and easy to fly into, and it’s a 2.5 hr drive for Austin folks.

  • Tryp

Yeah, not to mention the fact there’s a giant HP complex here in Houston.

      Indeed there is.

Nashville, TN.. Its a nice, central US place :)

I voted for Oklahoma City because it’s a 20 minute drive from my house, but I’d be perfectly willing to drive down to Dallas and would be alright with Austin. Not sure I could make it up to Kansas City (plus, I just don’t like Kansas City).

    • Dave

But you can’t hardly get more central than KC. Plus, it’s easy to get in and out and easy to drive in and it has casinos and Sprint.
