WOR launches the App Mill. Pay what you want, give how you want, get amazing webOS apps.

By: , 5/23/2011 9:48 pm | 48 comments

We all know that the App Catalog is chocked full of awesome apps. We talk about them all the time here on WOR and we wish there were more hours in a day and more cash in our pockets to play with them all.

Now we can’t add any hours to the day, but what we can do is stretch those dollars you do have and get some amazing deals on some of the best webOS apps in the catalog! Interested? Thought you might be.

Welcome to the App Mill

We are almost always cooking up something over here at WOR, but this time we may have just outdone ourselves. We, along with some help from HP and our dev friends have created the App Mill. It is part experiment, part webOS outreach event, and all awesome.

We have gotten a group of some of the best apps in the catalog and bundled them together to create what we call a crate. We will be releasing these crates from time to time, but they will only be available for a short period of time. Once a crate is gone, it is gone forever.

For our first crate has so many awesome apps that we just had to call it the “Stuffed full of Awesome” crate. There are 10 apps including YouView, Neato!, and Notes. It really does live up to its name.

Pay what you want, give how you want.

Now here is what is super cool. You get to choose how much you pay for the crate. If you totaled up all the apps they would cost your around $35, but how much comes out of your wallet is completely up to you.

What is even more awesome is that you get to choose how your money is divided up. You can:

  • Give it to the devs who made the apps
  • Give it to a charity/non-profit
  • Give it to the people who brought you this amazing deal (webOSroundup)

It really is up to you.

You ready?

The first crate will go on sale on May 26th and will be gone forever just 10 days later on June 4th. We wanted to let you know a little early so you can spread the word.

Go get it! appmill.webosroundup.com

Small Print

  • Crates can only be used on devices with webOS 2.1 or higher. Version 2.0.1 devices and below do not support promo codes.
  • Crates can only be used on US devices. Sorry international peoples, we hope to get this changed with future crates.
  • All sales are final…we aren’t sophisticated enough to do refunds (negative numbers give David the willies).

flattr this!

Love the idea; hate that it’s for 2.1+ only. :(  Why? except for developers, and privileged peeps, who else has 2.1+ … I’m still waiting for Sprint to offer a new WebOS phone! Geesh!

    Very nice!! Now I just need 2.1 :( …can’t wait for a pre 3

Awesome concept but agree this is a little pointless with I’m sure at least 90% of our small community not on 2.1, but none the less guys thanks for all you do.

    • Dude

Why do people always spout unsupported 2.1 adoption numbers? I bet 90% of you are WRONG about how many people have 2.1.

Keep in mind Promo Codes are good for 60 days so if you plan to get a 2.x+ device soon (before 7/22) then you can still participate!

And miss out on the first crates…FAIL!

      • Jeffro Tull

I think you need to read the comment you replied to again. Except you should actually READ it this time.

While I love the work devs do, this 2.1 only is BS. At least HP made a promise to 1.4.5ers, you just said F’off and goodnight! You couldn’t wait one more month until REAL webOS 2.x devices are available? Palm Pre minus owners just keep gettting screwed! Stay strong my brothers!

    • Brandon

Those are some very strong statements; though while some of what you’re message does ring true, keep in mind that we Pre- users will have our day…just not quite yet. I personally am looking forward to my yet to be announced Pre3 on Sprint. Then, all of us thet have been “staying strong” will have our time. Patience, my friend; all will be right in the world soon…

      • Dude

Pre- users will have our day? Ha! It’s so funny that you still believe that.

    • Stuntman Mark

It’s pretty easy to put a Pre on 2.1. It’s worth it. By the way, they’re not screwing you by giving other people the option. At least 2 of the apps in the box are 2.1 only.

  • dmm

Suppose I already have some of the apps in the crate and want the rest.  How easy is it to split up the crate among two or more devices?  (Of course, I still have to find someone else with a 2.1 device…)

    • Blaize

This was my question, as well. I already have some of these, but would love to have the others. Can I give away the promo codes?

    • http://twitter.com/Syntactix Syntactix LLC

You receive a promo code for each app so yes you could give away the code for an app you already have.

  • eid

Great idea and very topical charity!  I need my future webOS device before participating but this is a great thought and a time-saver for new users.  A greatest hits for apps.

  • Barb F.

In an earlier comment, someone said it was “easy” to convert to 2.1. I currently have a Pre2 with 2.0.1. Can anyone let me know how to convert it?

    • Stuntman Mark

Webos Internals has all the info on how to do it.

  • Masta Haze

does it work for non official countries?

Yet again, anything outside the US of A is barren lifeless desert. Even canada, let alone the UK. Not sure who’s behind this (I suspect HP) but at least cover the official release countries. I know the UK hasn’t exactly been a pre party, but I hear it’s been moderately popular in germany.

    • http://twitter.com/Syntactix Syntactix LLC

Unfortunately Promo Codes have to be generated for each country individually.  I know WOR wants this to be an international thing, but the logistics are harder to work out than one would think.  WOR is working with devs to come up with a good system so that the next crate they offer can be an international one.

      • Davyboy

That’s why I said HP. I know that WOR would even want martians to have a chance if they were able!

I Agree, this is a Great Idea, and a Win-Win situation for EVERYBODY, except us Pre(-) owners. We get SCREWED again!! :-( Is it possible to upgrade to 2.1 on Sprint with a Pre(-)? I want to get a FrankenPre, but holding out for hope that the Pre 3 is near.

“Crates can only be used on US devices.”
Hmm, well I was hoping that this would turn into a good chance to get apps for my Pre 2. I am in Canada and cannot access paid app catalog (thank you Palm’s weird carrier+geo restrictions) so haven’t been able to get access to a lot of great apps. I guess it is not to be.
Good luck for the app mill though, it is a nice idea.

  • Masta Haze

nevermind. I was probably dreaming too much. thanks anyway.

  • John K.

Yep, just figures original pre users get it in the bum from WOR just like we do from HP! Thanks for all that love guys

    • http://www.webosroundup.com/ David

Hey John, to insinuate that WOR is deliberately trying to screw over legacy device owners is not quite fair.

We can only work with the tools that we are given. Currently those tools don’t work on older devices. Nothing nefarious going on here.

  • Zevo

Stop whining about it being 2.0+. I have a pre+ and I love all the stuff coming out. If you are still in the 1.4.5.1 era enjoy what you have and praise the progress! Get a new phone if it’s that bad. They are new phones coming. Look ahead not back.

You know, if its such a problem for people that its 2.1 only, then update your dam phone. I have a launch day sprint pre running 2.1 at 1.1 GHz and its faster than my cousins iphone. If people would just learn how to READ instead of wanting it all handed to them. It took very little time and is surprisingly stable, especially considering the way its hacked onto the phone.

I’ve gotta say that it is sad to see such negative comments from the few individuals. If WOR gave away packages for 1.4.5 users, would you complain that 2.1 users didn’t get anything? Please give them a break – what they do is awesome for WebOS and, as is CLEARLY pointed out, promo codes are only supported on 2.1 and they want to make this available to everyone but they have their hands tied at the moment. I’m in the UK so I can’t get this offer but I’ve followed the simple instructions from WebOS Internals and got my Pre+ running 2.1 with Flash and @ 1 GHz. Do something about it or stop complaining… Please!

  • snotball007

I’d use the crate if I could get remix. The flaw with even a Pre+ running 2.1 is that the Palm Profile servers still show me on a lesser version…with no known fix in the wiki. So if an app is flagged as 2.x I cannot get it, yet I can use promo codes just fine.

How disappointing. Another hosing for 2.0.1 users. I have a Pre2 (Verizon). I didn’t want to wait forever for the Pre3 now I wish I had. Verizon’s refusal to upgrade us to 2.1 is really frustrating.
