3G TouchPad Clears the FCC?

By: , 6/24/2011 11:50 pm | 20 comments

The WiFi-only version of the TouchPad is only a week away but news of its siblings are starting to get more and more juicy. Earlier today we got word of the rumored Opal 7″ tablet that looks to be joining the 9.7″ TouchPad in August, and now we have a tip that a possible cellular-equipped version has gone through the FCC. According to the FCC filing this probable new version of the TouchPad will be equipped with an 850/1900Mhz cellular radios, giving further credit to the rumors of an AT&T-capable version. We can assume that this is in fact the cellular-equipped TouchPad as it carries the product code of B94HHI30C whereas the WiFi TouchPad has the product code of B94HHI29C. However this is all speculation for the time being as:

The question is will you hold off on the WiFi-only TouchPad to try to get a break on a cellular-equipped version? We’d also be quite interested to see if the plan is to have this version of the TouchPad be equipped with only a 3G radio or if it will be equipped with HSPA+. HSPA+ (I cannot call it 4G, sorry) would be a significant feature over other tablets out there, including the vaunted iPad2. We’re hoping this pans out sooner rather than later.

flattr this!

As we have all heard, we don’t really care what we get as long as sprint gets it. I think most of us are on that boat, I am one of them. But I want to see a great phone on sprint, not just one with webos that’s okay. I wonder if the touchpad will ever make it’s way onto sprint? Probably sometime sooner or later, though of course we all hope sooner.

I don’t see the point in getting a 3G version of any tablet or netbook. I’d get a MiFi device so you are not limited to only one device getting internet. You can connect mutiple devices to one 4G/3G device and pay one fee for it.

I would have to agree. I already have a phone bill, if I’m going to pay another one, it better work on more than one device.

Agreed. Pre3 has mobile hot spot and I’m going to have my phone with me anywhere I take a 10″ tab. I could see 3/4G being more important w/ 7″ tab, but I’m not intersted in that. Pre3 will go eveywhere and TP will be bigger and easier to view & work when I’m sitting still. And if sprint won’t carry P3 then i’ll find a carrier who will, even after 12 yrs w/ sprint. WebOS works the way I think and has made bigger impact on me than sprint has.

In my case it would even make some sense.

My German carrier lets me order multiple SIM-Cards that I can use simultaneously with voice and data (the very same data plan, don’t have to buy different ones).

The only thing that gets me worried is the battery life once that tablet connects over the air. But I might buy such a version once the 7 inch webOS-device is out. I probably won’t carry my 9,7″ a lot around ;)

I’m holding off until the 3G/4G version. Although the coverage in Bangkok is sad. I still want to be connected all the time. I did already order all my accessories. Sweet…Should be rocking a 3G version by the end of July..I hope.

  • Addiarmadar

Already committed to the wifi only touchpad, don’t need another data plan when I got freeteather on my pre.

day1 pre (-) is on its final days . . . hurry HP, bring “Everybody On” to Sprint . . . .hurry ~

  • Naz

I am also amongst the people who r still rocking the pre -, i m interested to find out how HP will be making it right for us pre owners still on 1.4.5.

    • T.A. Portland, OR

Love my original pre but don’t expect more than ~2 yrs from a phone this high tech. Looking forward to upgrading to pre3. I’m sure if I tried webOS 2.x on vintage pre it’d tell me ‘too many cards’ the instant it booted up.

  • Den

Wasn’t thinking of getting the TP, but the recent demo vids and the Fox vid with Richard Kerris may have changed my mind a bit. Plus I need something I can mount to my elliptical machine to keep me from getting bored.

I’m likely to leave Sprint and go to Virgin Mobile with the new Motorola Triumph coming out mid July. For $25 a month no contract I can have a simi current device, then switch back to Sprint when they get a WebOS device. Getting the TP would help satisfy my WebOS fix while on Android!

Hell, HP should also release the Pre3 on Virgin Mobile. Same Sprint network.
