Company enhances webOS Developer Program with new updates

PALO ALTO, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced HP webOS Pivot, providing users an entertaining and informative editorial resource for discovering webOS 3.0 applications for the HP TouchPad, which launches July 1.

“We want our partners to experience webOS as the growing platform of opportunity, and we’re investing in new ways to help market their applications on our platform.”

Designed to complement the HP webOS App Catalog, Pivot will showcase a broad range of applications – and the developers who create them – by providing customers the freedom to explore based on their interests and lifestyles. It’s just one of the new ways HP is enhancing the webOS Developer Program and investing further in the success of the growing ecosystem.

“Pivot brings app discovery to a new level for customers and developers alike,” said Richard Kerris, vice president, webOS Worldwide Developer Relations, HP. “We want our partners to experience webOS as the growing platform of opportunity, and we’re investing in new ways to help market their applications on our platform.”

Published on a monthly basis, Pivot is designed to broaden developer exposure and create a dynamic marketplace for the burgeoning webOS developer community.

Consisting of original content by journalists and photographers affiliated with leading publications, Pivot will include visually driven editorial pieces, columns from notable guest writers sharing their perspectives on digital culture, feature stories focused on applications around specific topics, and in-depth reviews – all accompanied by vibrant photos and illustrations on HP TouchPad’s brilliant screen. Content will be catered to the specific interests and requirements of a given region, appealing to a wide range of international customers.

Pivot will publish initially for English, French, German and Spanish languages and will be updated over the air directly to all HP TouchPad customers.

“Pivot has the right focus,” said Joe Simon, chief technology officer, Conde Nast. “It provides an enriching experience for customers and is a great environment for developers considering the platform.”

Investing in webOS developer success

The webOS Developer Program enhancements also include a new discount structure. Developers will have access to this pricing model based on their years in the Palm developer program and active applications in the webOS App Catalog.

“Working with HP and the webOS ecosystem has been fantastic,” said Haden Blackman, co-president and chief creative officer of Fearless Studios, a game company recently started by Blackman and fellow LucasArts alum, Cedrick Collomb. “It’s a perfect fit with our core values as a company – creative risks mitigated by smart technology choices. Because the platform is so accessible and developer-friendly, we’ve been able to build the game we want to build.”

“We love the TouchPad and the webOS platform for game development,” added Collomb, chief technology officer, Fearless Studios. “It’s built from the ground up for seamless connectivity between devices and it’s an open platform, which makes development that much easier.”

So its like an ebook of recommended apps?

    • Rich

It’s more than that Sketch, it is a showcase for developers as well. It should be a really interesting version of the dev spotlight and a few other things rolled into one. I (as a developer) like the sound of it.

With Pivot added, that brings the HP app catalog from 5,698 apps to 5,699 apps. Wow! Now they’re almost at 5,700 apps. Exciting times!

OK…. nothing to see or listen to here. Same old FUD (veiled in sarcasm). Move along please…

      • Abe

PalmOn is always trolling on webOS. Why does he even come and comment? Is there a way to block him from commenting?

Oh, and I want my TouchPad now!!

        • Truthtobetold

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion wheather it’s trolling or praising.
I prefer the latter cause trolling doesn’t really help you or others.

And here we thought Pivot might be a 7-inch TouchPad. I’m not sure I totally get the name/product association Whatever the case as long as they utilize the tablet space to engage interactivity; there are some great examples of this happening on the iPad platform that takes the traditional print magazine model and does something ‘magical’ to it (videos, touching to rotate products, animations). It would be nice to see a preview of this! Or a micro site, not a boring press release…(come on HP! Market everything you do!)

I thought we thougt that the HP TouchPad7 or the TouchPadGo might be the 7-inch tablet. There’s still hope. I’m waiting patiently for it…

This is Crap, first it’s only for TouchPad, what happen to the Veer or Pre3, matter the fact why is it, not on the Web for everybody to see, this is just a marketing hype to get developers on WebOS, and i hate that HP those these kind of cheap shots, sorry but lately i have to say PDK development on WebOS, is below average, WebOS make Claims to API and they do not Work Correctly or there are difficulties almost on every OTA, what they need to do is stop this nonsense and start providing proper Development Documentation, stable API’s.
Now so far this WebOS Pivot is concerned, is a waste of time, and will not give Developer Exposure, especially those who are noob’s or small or single Developers.

    • Matt_99_hey

there’s a problem with ‘hey, everyone can make an app for webos.’ yes, they can, but they end up not looking very pretty. or have limited functionality. or don’t have offer features that other apps clearly do. don’t think just because you are a small-town app developer that they owe a spot on the front page of something. if you create a good app, people will see it. but if you create an app that lacks the ‘finesse’ of the top iOS apps, the visual elegance of well-done apps, the functionality of an app that works like magic, well then, why should you get that attention.

Okay first this is not the Point i was making, also let me add and my mistake should have from the previous post, my point of View goes from Game Development, smaller houses do not have the Resources as Bigger ones, also there are some concerns i have and most likely have to safe some money and let a lawyer take a look at License Agreement with HP, but in the End for me this WebOS Pivot, will only bring success to those Special Premier Developers that HP works with like GameLoft or Glu Mobile, also this WebOS Pivot, is another way for HP to make some Marketing Money, to offer special Feature Spots and so on, so in the End this does not look like anything for the Little Guy, especially in Game Development.

If I understand you correctly (Barely), You have seen an early edition of Pivot and its layout?  How can you say it will not benefit the small developer unless you have some knowledge gained from elsewhere than the article?  If you do, please share links!

          • http://profiles.google.com/anayagamingllc Jason Buffalo

Use some common sense and stop being so naive, First there is allot of Developers for WebOS, and more coming, second WebOS HP Pivot as stated is a Magazine or editorial what ever, so HP don’t want to waste money and make money doing the Editorial for the Customer who uses Touchpad, There are many Apps and many Developers, i doubt HP WebOS Pivot is for the Small and start out Developer, but you know what we can wait and see.

its for webos 3.0. the phones will likely get it… relax.

and it will likely benefit small developers more than anything…
