HP TouchPad: Interviewed at HP Discover…Along with Tim Pettitt [Video]

By: , 6/21/2011 10:30 am | 12 comments

Our friend Jeffrey Powers, @geekazine , interviewed HP’s Tim Pettitt at the HP Discover event in Las Vegas. In this fifteen minute video, you will hear Pettitt “touch” on many of the key features of the HP TouchPad running webOS 3.0.

I was fortunate to be a part of the demonstration of this this TouchPad, popping in at the 1:30 minute mark and back again later to test out the Glyder 2 HD app ( I crashed and burned ). As you will see in the video, apps were launching fast and Glyder 2 looks amazing on that 9.7 inch screen. The Touch to Share functionality is discussed revealing the TouchPad will prompt for Bluetooth to be turned on if a Touch-to-Share transfer is attempted with it off (i.e. no need to search through settings to enable that feature).

Those of us who know webOS well know that the OS is filled with many features that make navigating it a pleasure. You can add accessories like the TouchStone that allows you to charge the tablet while it rests on the dock, even with the cover attached. The webOS faithful have waited a long time for the release of the TouchPad. One can see how much thought HP has put into making the TouchPad and webOS work… like nothing else [Well played, sir! -Ed].

Wow. A great demonstration. I umm… I want it. And that BT keyboard.

The Touchpad protective case has a flap that covers the screen. Will that flap be removable? Will it be able to be placed behind the touchpad and still charge with the touch stone charger?

    • George Salcedo

@mikeS Yes… You can charge the Touchpad on the TouchStone with Cover on &Flap.

Very interesting and provides a closer look at Skype…though the phone app takes some time to load.  Even Tim gets a little impatient with it.

Hopefully HP can polish out all the sluggish aspects since I suspect Engadget and This is my Next…  will end up jumping all over these issues like last time when Josh referenced still having problems with the calendar on the Veer.

And yes it does look like a case or some type of protection on the edge on the Touchpad.   Looking forward to seeing what other 3rd party manufactures make for the Touchpad.  Competition is good!  Sorli…

@Sorli Mr. Pettitt mentioned several times that the Touchpads he carried were not release builds. Rich & I verified that the different Touchpads we came across were different HW revs. This particular TP was running a test / diag build to collect data. The phone app taking a while too launch did not concern us too much since TP was not paired to a phone. The TP is not flawless, but performed very well. It needs some staple apps to fill that launcher & a decent ecosystem to back it up. We will hear more on that leading up to launch…

I think apps like Skype that rely on a network connection might be expected to balk at a tech convention..
